World Bank Stifles Wolfowitz’s Girlfriend

Speaking truth to Pow–MMMFRRFF!

I am so glad the Wall Street Journal is still hammering away at the World Bank about their attempt to railroad Paul Wolfowitz. They’ve said in several editorials by now that they are going to push back–or turn a “firehose” on the World Bank for what they’re trying to do here. Bret Stephens, in particular, has offered to do for the World Bank what the WSJ’s Claudia Rosett did for the United Nations Oil-for-Food Program:

As this column goes to press, it’s unclear whether Mr. Wolfowitz’s presidency will survive the week. So be it. Once the Wolfowitz “scandal” ends, we can begin looking in earnest at the real scandal called the World Bank.

I kind of get the feeling that even if you’re not already interested in how the WB spends your tax dollars, you may change your mind after you hear what the WSJ will dig up.

Exit Question: By the left’s own standards, does this little bit of HuffPo scandal-mongering about Ms. Riza’s nationality count as Islamophobia?

World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz’s girlfriend, Shaha Riza, for whom Wolfowitz arranged not only jobs, incredible pay raises, automatic “outstanding” ratings in performance reviews, but also — apparently — a security clearance, is probably not a spy. But our system of national security “secrets management” is not based on trust. It’s based on multi-pronged, overlapping constant investigation — human and electronic.

It would be important for any senior State Department or Defense Department official tasked with maintaining the integrity and security of classified material and information to approach Shaha Riza — a Libyan national raised in Saudi Arabia — who was the “girlfriend” of the Deputy Secretary of Defense — as if she could be a spy.

He seems to be saying “she’s passed a thorough background check and qualified for a security clearance, so she’s probably not a spy. But let’s just pretend like she is.”

Doesn’t surprise me that they’re trying to screw Wolfowitz over.

As for his girlfriend, I like that name, Shaha Riza…SHAHA RIZA *SHAHA RIZA* Say it real fast in a Beavis voice! Weeeeee!!

Anyway, nice double standard by Huffpo. Can you imagine the squealing if a prominent liberal politico or figure had a MidEast girlfriend/wife/whatevah and *We* had asked the same question? It’d be another round of conservatives are bigots stories throughout all leftist media.

Much has been made of the fact that the raise Mr. Wolfowitz accorded Ms. Riza–after his attempt to recuse himself was rejected by the Ethics Committee, and after he was required to resolve the matter himself, thereby forcing the very conflict-of-interest he had sought to avoid

The bolded parts are what bugs me about this entire thing.

He went to the ethics committee and said “This is my girlfriend” and tried to recuse himself. The Ethics committee told him to handle it himself (and, by some accounts I’ve read, recommended the raise). He follows through (as they told him to) and is now in hot water.

If you can’t trust your ethics committee, who can you trust?

If I recall correctly, some on the left did cry racism when we objected to Governor McGreevey assigning his Israeli boytoy to head Homeland Security in New Jersey.

It didn’t matter that the complaint was that he was an unqualified non-citizen. Instead, they said we don’t trust ‘brown’ people to keep the country safe.

I was impressed, because, it’s the first time I’ve ever seen the net-left decry racism against Israelis.

They haven’t made an Ethics Committee Ethics Committee yet, have they?

Just kidding, there’s no such thing as ethics in DC or international organizations.

Hey, they’re Anti-Zionists, not Anti-Semites!

Heh.

Jade–speaking of McSleazy, I forgot to mention in the post below about his wanting to become a priest that his current job is teaching ethics at some college.

I see The Boss is subbing for O’R again tonight. That’s getting to be a pretty regular gig – kinda like Jay Leno subbing for Johnny Carson.

Well, if a future PRIEST can’t teach an ethics class, who can?

It must have been a tough call for them. I can just imagine them weighing out the pros and cons:

“On the one hand, he gay. On the other hand, he’s a joooooo! I just don’t know whether to support him or not. Oh, wait! He was sleeping with a liberal. Why didn’t they tell us to begin with. NOT GUILTY!!!”

I’m not interested in how the World bank spends my tax dollars, I’m only interested in making it stop.

“World Bank Ethics Committee”
Nope, I still can’t say it without snickering.

common sensineer on May 4, 2007 at 11:11 PM

He went to the ethics committee and said “This is my girlfriend” and tried to recuse himself.

The idea that the President of the organization – the top man in the outfit – cannot recuse himself because some dumbass committee says so, is ridiculous.

How would he be looking in the media right now if he’d tried to recuse himself, the committee said no, and he said, “screw you, I recuse myself anyway, and you can’t make me not recuse myself”? Golden and untouchable, that’s how he’d look.

Memo for my fellow minions in the VRWC:

I propose that we refer to Shaha Riza as Mr. Wolfowitz’s “consort.” The term is accurate, and has two merits:

1) It eliminates the foolishness of calling a grown woman a “girlfriend.”
2) It has connotations of old European nobility which fit both her and Wolfowitz’s social standing, and will incidentally drive the Euros nuts.

Respectfully submitted by MFC (Minion First Class),

It’s ok to be islamophobic if the victim of islamophobia is part of the right-wing neo-con conspiracy, we all know that … but then if she’s part of the right-wing neo-con conspiracy then she’s not likely to be a spy is she … hmm, danger, danger!!! cognitive dissonance overload. ***system shutdown imminent***

So Obama’s middle name is cause for grave concern, but this, this is clearly racism. LOL.
