LA Times smears Fred! for playing a racist in 1988 made for TV movie

Fred is now on the MSM’s hit list:

So can “Law & Order” actor and former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) become the first presidential candidate with this credit? Thompson played a white supremacist, spewing anti-Semitic comments and fondling an autographed copy of “Mein Kampf” on a television drama 19 years ago.

His colleagues say that he was just an actor putting everything he had into playing the role of a charismatic racist, named Knox Pooley, in three episodes of CBS’ hit show “Wiseguy” in 1988. “Do you call Tom Cruise a killer because he played one in a movie?” asked show creator and writer Stephen J. Cannell.

Is the L.A. Times trying to imply something here? It is completely irresponsible to even hint Fred Thompson is a racist because he played one on TV decades ago.

The L.A. Times hit piece says “some conservative political blogs” are concerned about the “problem”:

But in the age of YouTube, this performance could raise an intriguing political question: How does a performer eyeing a presidential run deal with a video history that can be downloaded, taken out of context, chopped into embarrassing pieces and then distributed endlessly though cyberspace? Some conservative political blogs are already considering the problem.

It isn’t until several paragraphs later the L.A. Times identifies one of these “conservative political blogs” or should I say blog, in the singular form:

Some conservative websites are already discussing how a potential Thompson campaign may have to deal with these scenes. People who work out their politics on the Internet understand how potentially troublesome things like this can be. Like pebbles in a pond, you can’t know where the ripples are going to stop — or what the gullible or the mean-spirited may make of them.

One website called Patterico’s Pontifications asked the question recently: “How will they trash Fred Thompson?” Several respondents immediately mentioned the “Wiseguy” performance.

I went to Patterico’s blog to see what he wrote and found out he did not write anything. The L.A. Times quoted a comment from a post Patterico wrote nearly two months ago predicting the media would smear Fred. It turns out he was absolutely correct.

Patterico explains more at his blog.

Exit question: Why doesn’t the MSM go after real racists with the same zeal they use to go after fake racists?

By this logic Ronald Reagan shouldn’t have been elected because he fathered a chimp.

Keljeck on May 4, 2007 at 4:01 PM

If Ronnie could survive ‘Bedtime for Bonzo’ surely Fred! will survive ‘Wiseguy’. I don’t think Carroll O’Conner is really Archie Bunker.

If it’s on TV, it must be true!

Doghouse on May 4, 2007 at 4:03 PM

The real question is will he survive “Iron Eagle 3?”

Slublog on May 4, 2007 at 4:03 PM

Heh! This is the best they’ve got? The ridiculousness, and transparency of the LA Times piece gives Fred more credibility not less. I’m sure the center is going to count him out as a potential candidate now..*rolls eyes*

Who here would love to see Fred and Bagger Vance mano a mano in a debate?

Theworldisnotenough on May 4, 2007 at 4:03 PM

I can tell you bluntly Jewish groups around the country don’t think a guy who played a racist on a TV movie thinks he’s a racist in real life. This is so blatantly an attempt to smear a Republican actor that its laughable

Defector01 on May 4, 2007 at 4:04 PM

I guess this means that the liberal left is scared s**tless of Fred. He isn’t even a candidate yet and they are already attacking him.

Interesting that they would say something this ignorant, given that they did the same thing to Patterico (taken a comment from his post out of context, chopped it up into pieces and distributed it endlessly). Nice touch, LA Times (and really professional too).

Rick on May 4, 2007 at 4:08 PM

that’s a pure hit-piece

but it makes me feel good that the only dirt they can dig is fake. it makes me more confident about Fred!

as for the Byrd video on YouTube that Ian linked to, come on… he just says the n-words, but through-out the whole interview he talks about how racism is horrible. he *was* a racist, but *isn’t* one now.

AlexB on May 4, 2007 at 4:09 PM

By this logic Ronald Reagan shouldn’t have been elected because he fathered a chimp.

Keljeck on May 4, 2007 at 4:01 PM

What?? He fathered a chimp? Thank goodness I wasn’t old enough to vote during the Reagan years, cause…(thinking…hmm, Carter, Mondale)…nevermind, we were better off with the chimp’s dad.

Rick on May 4, 2007 at 4:11 PM

So does that means that Hillary Clinton is a black Southerner, because she played one at a speech?

Does that mean that Nancy Pelosi is a world leader because she played one to a Syrian murderer?

Does that mean Obama is a messiah, since he has played one at campaign fundraisers?

Tim Burton on May 4, 2007 at 4:11 PM

Ian, that’s too easy. A different question could be……

What are the odds that fred will actually have to answer that question in a debate?

csdeven on May 4, 2007 at 4:13 PM

Hahhahhahahaha……This is a joke, right? This was an article from the LA Times April 1st Edition, right?

No? This was a real news report?

Well, I guess it was only a matter of time. People out here are busy thinking that Martin Sheen is qualified to be President because he played on on TV. Now, they think Fred is not qualified to be President because he plaid a racist on T.V.

When will the people out here figure it out – Just because you play something on TV does not mean you are that thing in real life!

JadeNYU on May 4, 2007 at 4:13 PM

Just prooves the MSM is scared of Fred!

and I can easily explain why… he speaks plainly and makes sense.

Its very hard to be confused by, or spin, what Fred! says… it’ll put a great many of the MSM onto the unemplyment line… cause its not like they know how to do factual reporting…

Defector, I’m angling from memory here, but I’m fairly certain that Furman’s n-word allegations stemmed from a screen play for which he was compensated to provide “street” consultation. Take my modifier “fairly” into consideration, however.

I used to watch Wiseguy back in the day, and I remember those episodes. Paul Guilfoyle was also involved, so clearly he needs to be fired from ‘CSI’ because of his racist past. I’m sure the LA Times will be calling for that next, right? By their standards, we might as well just throw everyone who’s ever played a criminal into prison right now.

Why do I picture Fred smiling and saying, “Is that the best you got, son?”

Limerick on May 4, 2007 at 5:26 PM

Darn if it isn’t true. There are people who think that what an actor does on the screen represents their real life. The LAT, being in Tinsel Town, should know better.

Apparently it was an extremely slow news day because they had to go back 20 years to get some dirt on Thompson who was only doing a job and trying to make a living.

I’m sure if a part called for him to be an LAT editor he would have done it as demeaning as it was.

ReubenJCogburn on May 4, 2007 at 5:49 PM

Ruben,

YOU RACIST OAK!!!!

I was a maple and you denied me my rights to sunlight.

There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.

The trouble with the maples,
(And they’re quite convinced they’re right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can’t help their feelings
If they like the way they’re made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can’t be happy in their shade.

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
“The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light.”
Now there’s no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw. – The Trees – Rush.

F15Mech on May 4, 2007 at 6:06 PM

What are the odds that fred will actually have to answer that question in a debate?
csdeven on May 4, 2007 at 4:13 PM

If it’s a Chris Matthews-type interviewer, the odds approach certainty: “Mr. [not 'Senator']Thompson, you were very convincing playing Knox Pooley in the 1988 movie “Wiseguy”. Lee Strasberg says that you draw on parts of yourself to play a character. What part of your self did you draw on to play such a charismatic racist?”

eeyore on May 4, 2007 at 6:15 PM

My money says the LA times was lurking on that blog, saw the post and it became the whole idea for the “story.”

Lord knows if they’re dumb enough to spin that into a story, they can’t be clever enought to have come up with the idea for it on their own.

Ian, as I was reading your post, the minute I read it was Patterico’s blog they were going to misquote, I could call bulls^%t on the La Times without reading further. This reminds me of those Holiday Inn ads where some geek shuts down a nuclear reactor because he was smart enough to stay at Holiday Inn.

I suppose, by this standard, Kieffer Sutherland can be expected to save the free world.

And Rosie O’Donnell? “I’m not a comedian, but I try to pretend to be one on TV”

Look at the bright side of all this. Since Fred! played a navy admiral in The Hunt for Red October. He is a militery expert. As he now plays a lawer he must be a legal expert. With all the roles the man has played he’s got to be the most experienced person, with expertise in the greatest number of fields, and therefore should be elected President.

Right?

Exit question: Why doesn’t the MSM go after real racists with the same zeal they use to go after fake racists?

Journalists have become lazy – that simple I think. If conservative leaning journalists attacked this issue using data from the Southern Poverty Law Center it might compel the “MSM” to be more responsible, if for nothing else the competition. http://www.splcenter.org/index.jsp

They kind of count on the right getting angry about stuff like this and in turn that brings out the irresponsible commentaries from those who are a very small segment of the right. In other words they know it generates anger and attracts readers.

Ethical? No. But the normal reactions are not effective so a different counter strategy might be in order.

35. He played neo-nazi con-man “Dr.” Knox Pooley on a five episode arc of the TV show “Wiseguy”. His character gave a couple of speeches denouncing “mud people” and similar slurs which could easily be taken out of context and posted on You Tube.

He played neo-nazi con-man “Dr.” Knox Pooley on a five episode arc of the TV show “Wiseguy”. His character gave a couple of speeches denouncing “mud people” and similar slurs which could easily be taken out of context and posted on You Tube.

That could work both ways. If he says something bad, he could always claim he was channeling the character …

Tomorrow we will read at least 5 comments from csdeven that we’re having a Fred! orgy over someone who’s not running yet.

Tomorrow is also the first day of the weekend. Have a good one.
