Dem lawmakers:retask the CIA to study Global Warming

posted at 8:53 am on May 4, 2007 by see-dubya

Democratic leadership on the real national security threat:*

Senior House Republicans are complaining about Democrats’ plans to divert “scarce” intelligence funds to study global warming.
The House next week will consider the Democrat-crafted Intelligence Authorization bill, which includes a provision directing an assessment of the effects that climate change has on national security.

This can’t be good for morale in the intel community: imagine patriotic Americans like Mike Spann being told that they’re supposed to stop shadowing bad actors and deploy to the South Pole to count endangered penguins. It’s humiliating.

It ought to be humiliating for the Democrats. That they would even consider pulling our spies off of Iranian nukes and Al Qaeda networks in order to put them to work on Global Warming is damning. Clearly the Democrats prefer to defend us against their list of abstract, ideologically driven boogeymen rather than our very real, ruthless, proven enemies.

If this requirement should pass, the first terrorist bomb to go off on U.S. soil means the political end of the Democratic party. In the post-mortem hearings, the DNI need only point out that even a handful of field officers, analysts, and resources were diverted from terror assessments to work climate issues, per Congressional dictum. And thus the buck will be passed back to the Pelosi crowd.

Intelligence panel Chairman Silvestre Reyes, Texas Democrat, said the climate-change study is one of several shifts his party has made to intelligence policy.
“We’re concerned that global warming might impact our ability to maintain national security,” he told The Times, describing the idea as “cutting edge.”

“Cutting edge” is nice, Congressman Reyes, but so are fundamentals, like…oh, I dunno…whether Al-Qaeda is Sunni or Shiite.

__________
* unlike, say, quote-unquote terrorism, which is of course a Bushco politicized fraud. I totally heard this show on Pacifica with this Uighur community activist who was all, like, “Mother Earth is Crying”, and they were playing these special talking drums from Cote d’Ivoire…dude, which reminds me that we should also probably retask the Marines to stop ivory poaching once we take them out of Iraq, because: elephants! And I was like, this is true security of which she is speaking, not just national security (or should I say–nationalIST security), but planetary security and just, just knowing you are at peace with so many different cultures and ways of knowing, and if we could all just emulate the spirit of that woman, really embrace her in the place where she and her sisters are coming from with conscious and integrity, there is literally no end to the possibilities we could achieve together.

That is authentic healing, of the world’s broken spirit. And that is why we need the CIA, and also the School of the Americas, who have done so much to tear, to tear at the fabric and the warp and the woof of the authentic communities of goodwill and of peaceful coexistence with nature, to begin the reweaving of the fabric of our common dreams.

But, so, terrorism: just a means of fascist corporate control to keep us scared and confused and on edge and not thinking about the real problems of global climate change.

Seriously, though, it will probably be a couple of desk jockeys who weren’t doing anything anyway. From what I here there are not field people at the CIA anymore, anyway. Lots of people doing stuff that has nothing to do with our security.

But I agree this should bite the Dems big-time if something happens in the future. Should bite them, but only will in the blogosphere. The Republican Party never knows when they have struck gold, and would never use something like that to their advantage.

“The House next week will consider the Democrat-crafted Intelligence Authorization bill, which includes a provision directing an assessment of the effects that climate change has on national security.”

Dear Democrat Pansies,

Our 12 month intelligence investigation into the effects of global warming on national security has revealed the following surprising results:

Point 1: The heat and blast from multiple nuclear attacks in our major cities will have far more effect on global warming than cow flatulence or the dirty exhaust from a fleet of 1986 Ford Broncos.

Point 2: We will need to re-address our national security standards following a nuclear attack, if any national security personnel survive the incident.

Point 3: China, the world’s largest polluter of the environment, will be unscathed by the nuclear attacks on the U.S., and consequently will rise to superpower status, replacing the ashbin that was once a proud and prosperous nation.

Wishing you continued success,

All the guys at the CYA

fogw on May 4, 2007 at 9:33 AM

Well, seeing as how CIA is loaded with politicial hacks like Valerie Plame who is probably about as useful in the War on Terror as a chocolate hammer, counting the corn in penguin crap is probably much closer to her level of competence. Think about it; we can’t fire these people; they don’t want to do anything that a Republican President wants them to do, so, send them off to Antarctica, or Tierra del Fuego, or wherever, and let them study the leg humping habits of the local fauna. Then, you find some ex military intelligence guys and create an informal intelligence outfit that will a)do their f***ing job without constant press leaks and b)actually care about the national security of the US.

This is typical Carterism, self blindered and oblivious until the worst happens and then impotent to fix.

Of course why should OBL or his ilk attack when Liberals are willing to hand the nation over to whomever wants it?
Sounds French doesn’t it?

A patient enemy only needs to wait, remember OBL got reamed for angering us instead of waiting.

What the hell is this study going to show that all the other bunch haven’t already? I mean, people all over the world are studying this, but we need to divert intel funds to do it? Madness I tell you!

WisCon on May 4, 2007 at 9:45 AM

umm, hey Congress! Hows about letting the SCIENTISTS study this without interference and intimidation, huh? There’s a different thought! What do spies know about climate change, and what do climatologists know about spying?

CrimsonFisted on May 4, 2007 at 9:56 AM

Wait a sec…. just hoooolllldddd on there a minute…

Isn’t this the same “Intelligence” crowd who missed 9/11, were wrong on WMDs, can’t find Bin L, couldn’t figure out the whole Sunni Shiite thing in Iraq… and now the Dems want them involved in Global Warming???

Color me confused.

You forget one thing, the Congressional liberals are giving the CIA liberals funds to wait for it … embarrass Bush with a NIE report that they can then leak to the public. How cool is that? The CIA can’t seem to do much right in the spy business, so change the subject.

Did I ever tell you, I suspect Democrats are nuts? Well it’s now more than a suspicion, it’s confirmed. The do anything, say anything, slime anything to get elected and control your life makes it point.

Clearly the Democrats prefer to defend us against their list of abstract, ideologically driven boogeymen rather than our very real, ruthless, proven enemies.

Why? Because this way, we don’t end up violating anybody’s civil liberties. We will spend our time going after the big bad corporations, and taxing individuals to no end. Dems will do away with everything by claiming that it causes global warming. Soon we will all be hearing that cell phones, televisions, computers, toasters, etc. all cause global warming – global warming taxes, here we come. The Dems want us to live in shacks, while they, the elite, have all the benefits of high class living (but don’t worry, they will pay their fair share of taxes – so it will be okay).

Rick on May 4, 2007 at 12:20 PM

It’s not far-fetched or ridiculous to consider the adaptations to be taken by our armed forces to combat a changing climate. Of course, I’d limit the scope of the investigations to just that. I’m not sure all Dems and supporters would agree.

You ever watch Future Weapons on the Discovery Channel? I could see something like this popping up there in the near future. Improved body armor that has a unique cooling agent or effect to reduce heat-stress on the body, etc.

Hootie on May 4, 2007 at 12:36 PM

But we should have seen this coming ! Think of how perfectly this fits the Democratic agenda. In a single action they manage to draw away vital funds and resources needed for the war on terror, demoralize and embarrass the CIA, sidetrack the CIA from pursuing the real enemies of America and at the same time perpetuate their beloved and fraudulent global warming scam.

What could be more perfect for them? Now that I think about it, my only surprise is that they haven’t done it sooner.

franksalterego on May 4, 2007 at 12:45 PM

Even for Democrats, this is asinine–and that’s saying something. So the same people who gutted intel budgets in the 90s, and thereby made us more vulnerable to terrorist attacks (like say, on 9/11), now want to shift resources away from real intelligence work again. F’ing brilliant. This is on par with that city commissioner in San Francisco that doesn’t think we need a military.

ReubenJCogburn on May 4, 2007 at 1:17 PM

So INTELLIGENCE AGENTS with information specialization in GEOPOLITICAL ISSUES and RELIGIOUS FUNDAMENTALISM is going to study EARTH SCIENCES AND METEROLOGY to determine the next threat……….anyone see a slight problem in this?

Its like asking the district attorney’s office to become surgeons at the local free health clinic

Defector01 on May 4, 2007 at 1:43 PM

Maxx is right. This is nothing more than pushing the Democrats’ agenda to oppose the war against the terrorists and weaken national security while appearing to do something about their made-up climate change “crisis.” If they were serious about investigating the effects of climate change on the US, the proper agencies would be the Army Corps of Engineers and the Coast Guard.

Lancer on May 4, 2007 at 1:56 PM

Senior House Republicans are complaining about Democrats’ plans to divert “scarce” intelligence funds to study global warming.

Lets see if I get this.
The CIA is going to study something that does not exist.
Global warming is a thing of the past – it is now known as climate change. That new name will cover any changes
, whether warm or cold. This means the scientists can get government grants for whatever is popular on any given day.

Okay, lets say the CIA does their study and issues a report.
It could read as follows:

“After using the entire 500 million dollars that was allocated for this project over the two year period for an extensive in depth study of the global warming project we have come to the conclusion that global warming does not exist, poses no threat to the world and there are no WMDs in Iraq.
We want to thank everyone who labored so tediously to do this study and write this report. We want to thank the American taxpayer for all the new desks, computers, cars and pay raises we received while completing the project. We hired former director George Tenet to head up this project so you should address any questions to him or his publishing company.”

At one time I was afraid to poke fun of the CIA. I thought they would come get me but now I question whether they could find me.

OBX Pete on May 4, 2007 at 2:27 PM

My question is a bit more fundamental. What in the education or experience of the average CIA employee qualifies the CIA to investigate global warming? This is as stupid as anyone paying any attention to Al Gore (who also has no expertise in the field).

duff65 on May 4, 2007 at 2:56 PM

Kini on May 4, 2007 at 3:41 PM
