I just got a phone call from Debbie Schlussel. She’s upset with my “defamatory” posts about her abilities as a lawyer, agent and talk show host. Said my comments were “actionable”. She was so upset that she tracked down various screen names that I use and did a little personal checking on my flaws.

Touchy, touchy. It seems that her luminous alabaster skin is micron thin.

However, saying someone “couldn’t make it” in various professions may be critical, but it’s hardly defamatory. “Making it” is a subjective assessment. Someone can have significant success relative to the general public but still not “make it” in a particular endeavor.

Since I’m sure that Debbie is following this thread, I’ll use an analogy that a jock sniffer might understand.

A player who gets drafted in the first round and leaves the NBA after a couple of years to go play in Europe is certainly a skilled basketball player relative to the general public, but it would not be defamatory to say that they didn’t “make it” in pro ball.

In most people’s minds, “making it” is comparable to great success. While Debbie is, I’m quite sure, an adequate attorney, and I’m sure that as an agent she represents the interests of her clients, and she definitely had a radio show for about a year, she has not reached the top rank of any of those professions.

If Debbie wants to sue me for defamation, like I told her, she can go up to 1200 Telegraph and file. I’m sure she knows the directions to get there. I’m perfectly willing to let 12 of my fellow citizens look at the record and determine if Debbie has had great success in the fields that I mentioned. We can do discovery and determine what percentage of criminal cases she’s won, what kinds of civil judgements she’s gotten for her clients, what the Arbitron ratings were for her radio show, and what athletes and entertainers she currently represents.

In any case, this is rich. Debbie paints herself as some kind of libertarian yet she tries to intimidate people from making critical comments about her on blogs. Like I said, with DS, it’s never really about the politics or culture, it’s just about Debbie.

PS: Just to be sure, I checked with a good friend who works, full time, as an attorney and he said that my comments aren’t defamatory. He also said that it sounds like a couple of “babies fighting”. He knows me well. Sounds like he’s got a good read on Debbie as well.

While the entire American culture is going to a moral hell, I have never seen such a rubber stamp as I have in the black community. In fact I can’t think of a man in Cabrini under 30 that did NOT attend the Catholic church or Sunshine that condemned the drug dealing or such. It was more about “Hustlin’” and “Pimpin’” others.

And I don’t say this because I hate blacks or am sheltered from them, because I volunteer time with ethnics, but because I am concerned.

One of my favorite things is to read about Pullman Porters (I love railroads) and how hard they worked to support their families (80-100 hours a week). I wish they would go back to be willing to work that hard to support their families, they’d be a wealthy people group if they did.

I think we need to separate the “them” from the “they”. Every ethnicity is populated by the principled and the unprincipled. There’s a lot of white folk prospering from hip hop. And Eminem is hardly a portrait in civic virtue. A man Larry Flynt also comes to mind. Unfortunately, the only shared culture that has sprung from our multicultural society is the culture of self-gratification. We share little else. It’s not a problem that can be resolved (if it’s at all resolvable) by pinning the “most likely offender” ribbon on one another (and I’m aware that I’m dancing perilously close to a group hug and a chorus of Kum Baya). It, indeed, requires a concerted effort to extinguish this ugly, nihilistic, sub-human behavior.

Now, I know that I am generalizing, but this is true as a universal. It may fail at times of the specifics.

Again, Tim, I am neither solely condemning black culture or solely absolving it. My only point is that the mirror is very broad and has the full spectrum of faces reflected in it. Trash is trash regardless of what receptacle it originates from. Furthermore, the absense of any sustained and widespread defense of civility can be hung from nearly every door knob. It is disingenuous at best to rail against Akon without acknowledging that for at least 40 years, Americans (of all ethnicities) have passively allowed steadily accumulating mounds of excrement to replace public virtue. Who among us have truly put our best foot forward to extinguish this garbage? An email here and a phone call there does not even meet the definition of a mild inconvenience. As I said in my very first post on this issue, the problem isn’t Akon so much as the society whose apathy has allowed him to be.

But, once one crawls into the specific filth on which this thread concentrates, I think we’ll find a multicultural sty. It isn’t the black community alone, by far, that has rubber-stamped the steady demise of civility through the perversion of public airwaves. Every twisted form of self-gratification is now free expression to be defended on the basis of individuality and those of any background willing to oppose it are labeled dinosaurs, tyrants, or worse.

The media industry made decisions to prettify the gangstas – “cunning professionals.” I wonder though, what the national statistics are on the African-American families. The structured families quit the inner cities as soon as they could, leaving behind the rougher elements. So, I wonder what the demographics really are regarding incomes, schooling, education, etc. There are a lot of very solid Black families out there, doing fine, sending their kids to college, but they never get any attention for being normal folks. Too boring for the media to waste their precious time on?
