Video: Maher uses “gay Reagan” line again, pokes fun at Fred! while Matthews laughs

In March, I posted video of Bill Maher saying Republicans “love Ronald Reagan in a way that’s just gay.” On Tuesday night’s edition of “Hardball,” Maher repeated the slur:
BILL MAHER: The Republican party has this campy fixation with Ronald Reagan. It is almost gay about the way they are talking about him and obsessing about him.
Sounds like Maher is the obsessed one …
Later in the segment Maher bashes Fred Thompson, calling him “basset hound face.” Yikes. That comment gave Chris Matthews a harsh case of the schoolgirl giggles. The MSNBC host could be seen laughing on camera for several moments.
What liberal bias?

Hmm…Maher Kinda looks like a Bull Terrier.

The beady little eyes really do it. Definitely Bull Terrier.
Bad Candy on May 2, 2007 at 2:26 PM
Oh, you mean like Liberals and their obsession with Bill Clinton and Che Guevara?
mojojojo on May 2, 2007 at 2:27 PM
They’re already scared enough to start making childish personal insults. That says a lot about Fred!’s strength as a candidate.
DaveS on May 2, 2007 at 2:33 PM
This from a Viagra addict. Please, he can only get laid at the Playboy Mansion. In the real world, he is a loser on another loser’s show.
I am still thankful I canceled my HBO.
Stormy70 on May 2, 2007 at 2:34 PM
Wasn’t it the democrats who had a fixation on FDR that bordered on the gay?
deadbackpacker on May 2, 2007 at 2:35 PM
A couple of observations:
It seems that Bill Maher is the one fixated on homosexuality, regaling us with such gems as “Conservatives have an almost gay fixation about Reagan” and “Giuliani in a dress” jokes.
Second, I don’t know anyone who is scared of another terror attack in the sense that they’re cowering under their desks. Liberals like Maher conjure up the word “fear” because “vigilance” doesn’t seem to be in their spectrum of emotions and by all indications doesn’t seem to be in the Democrats bag of tricks.
Matticus Finch on May 2, 2007 at 2:43 PM
I guess that it is a good thing that nobody actually watches Chris Mathews. The only time I ever watched him was when he had Michelle Malkin on (and he still owes her an apology) and the time Senator Zell Miller threatened to kick his ass and wanted to challenge Mathews to a duel. Mathews and Maher are both inconsequential.
DAT60A3 on May 2, 2007 at 2:43 PM
Why aren’t the libtards atatcking Maher for using “gay” in a derogatory manner? Isn’t this an insult to gays? Or is it only an insult when a conservative uses the word “gay” or “fag” in a joking manner. I’m starting to think that the libtards really are blind to their own double standards…they are so intellectually inferior that their lack of any logic whatsoever is of serious concern when you think about how many of them are in positions of power and influence.
The few intelligent ones out there in the public debate (for example, Susan Estrich, Kirsten Powers) are reasonable, so that you can disagree with them while carrying on a dialogue…why can’t more libs be reasonable?
JustTruth101 on May 2, 2007 at 2:44 PM
Well put.
mikeyboss on May 2, 2007 at 2:48 PM
More slo-mo “drunkie” Chris Matthews!
hehe Matthews best quote, right near the beginning:
“Well I always try to inform”
JetBoy on May 2, 2007 at 2:50 PM
Maher is a total moron. Rudy blew it on terrorism, yet slammed arafat and the saudi dude AND went after the mob?
This guy is a partisan tool who is really a psuedo-intellectual.
csdeven on May 2, 2007 at 2:51 PM
Maher just looks old. Almost as old as his tired jokes. My 85 year old grandfather looks younger than Maher.
BTW, when can we expect GLAAD to criticize Maher for using the term “gay” as a derogatory?
GT on May 2, 2007 at 2:55 PM
Bill Maher making fun of someone else’s appearance?
And the kettle just yelled, “You called me WHAT!!?”
Look Bill, your oversized melon isn’t exactly easy to ignore. I mean WOW.
Seriously, add a clown hat to that guy, and he’s indistinguishable from that affable Monster Taco salesman, Jack. Only with far less personality.
Bill’s neck muscles must be massive.
Hey bill, Jupiter called…
It doesn’t look healthy. It looks like it might just explode. When it does, I want to be far, far away. I can see the HEADlines now. “Maher’s head explodes, tsunami of bullsh!t courses down LA river.”
He makes W.C. Fields look like a model on the cover of Men’s Health Magazine.
Every time that guy is on TV, by bobblehead collection gets jealous.
Ok, I’m done. Anyone else want to get out Paul Bunyan’s mallet and play Whack-a-Mole on this guy for a while?
JunkCoast on May 2, 2007 at 2:58 PM
You know, it is funny how liberals love to call conservatives gay or fag as an insult. Ace gets liberal trolls from time to time, and a huge number of them call Ace and the rest of us morons those two things. I really don’t get it. Liberals love to do that, and its just interesting how they are so ‘concerned’ with the rights and treatment of gays and other groups, and yet they use insults like that so bloody often…
I just don’t get it, but then again, liberal doublethink never really made sense to me.

I don’t like the comparison between Maher and the Bull (or any other)Terrier. He has neither the wit, nor the integrity, nor the loyalty nor the charm of the Bull Terrier.
While the Bull Terrier, at first glance, may make you think him ferocious, you quickly realize his friendliness to all. Maher, on the other hand, seeks to portray himself as a bon vivant comedic soul; yet we realize that his “humour” so-called is founded on meanness and viciousness.
The Bull terrier has no ego, nor places any one above any other. He is equal opportunity friendly to all. His joy is in making people happy, but at the expense of no one (except maybe himself). Conversely, Maher is all ego. His joy is in bringing down others.
So, don’t compare Maher to the Bull Terrier. It is not fair to the dog.
Maybe a better comparison would be the hyena.
Blaise on May 2, 2007 at 3:06 PM
I don’t watch Hardball, nor do I subscribe to HBO. I have to ask: It Matthews always like this?! OMG! I felt like I could sense my nerve endings going numb. That was terrible! Forget the liberal bias and all that. The segment had the rhythm of a dead rat.
I can’t believe he people even think of giving him credibility when segments like that are around.
looking4statesmen on May 2, 2007 at 3:09 PM
Blaise,
Can I compare him to just a part of a dog?
:P
JunkCoast on May 2, 2007 at 3:10 PM
Is it just me, or is there a harmonic convergence of sorts afoot where Bill Maher and James Woods are becoming the same person?
Or, is this just another tragic consequence of “Hardball Heroin”—ie smoking a lethal combo of Oxy and Viagra?
Steve LLamabutcher on May 2, 2007 at 3:10 PM
I’m merely comparing appearance Blaise.
Behaviorwise I’d compare him to one of those annoying yappy dogs that people carry around in bags in NY or LA.
Bad Candy on May 2, 2007 at 3:11 PM
When Bill Maher says “it’s almost gayyy” he sounds absolutely gay.
Aylios on May 2, 2007 at 3:19 PM
I like how Maher bad mouthed Giuliani in general terms, but praised him on specific acts, and how the host defended Giuliani.
I understand MSNBC is considered the most left-wing network, but I like the sanity I saw in that clip. Though I understand it’s atypical.
AlexB on May 2, 2007 at 3:25 PM
I think drooling out of your mouth when talking about Cheney is gay.
jp on May 2, 2007 at 3:26 PM
If Fred! wandered into the studio behind Maher as he was speaking this way, Maher would collapse into a puddle. Such brave talk! Say it to his face, brave little man.
CrimsonFisted on May 2, 2007 at 3:27 PM
You guys are little sensitive about Fred huh?
Honoria makes a few negative comments about him a few threads down and has 60 posters attacking her and coming to his defense and now this…
There’s no crying in politics, if Fred runs he’ll be ripped apart by Republicans and Democrats, that’s how campaigns work. Learn to love it.
JaHerer22 on May 2, 2007 at 3:28 PM
Potty Humor still exists!
If Chris Matthews thinks Bill Maher is a source of intellectually thought provoking commentour, he’s gatta be fooling himself.
I guess credibility is all the books in the background. Suppose to mean smaats, yeah!
Kini on May 2, 2007 at 3:29 PM
“HA!”
CliffHanger on May 2, 2007 at 3:29 PM
Maher seems to love the role of faux superiority over anyone he disagrees with. Christians and Conservatives especially are regarded as little children with subpar intelligence. Quite the case of projection, IMO.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that…dippy hypocrites.

Honora hasn’t been herself lately, in my opinion. She seems particularly ascerbic with her comments lately. I hope she feels better soon.
Matticus Finch on May 2, 2007 at 3:40 PM
Huh? All I said was that Maher looks like a Bull Terrier…and he totally does. A really ugly Bull Terrier, but a Bull Terrier. I’d say it has less to do with defense of Fred! than it does the fact that we’ve long hated Maher and Matthews, and the response isn’t inconsistent with any other Maher/Matthews post.
Bad Candy on May 2, 2007 at 4:04 PM

Actually, I find it very amusing. Fred Thompson has not even declared yet, and already the usual suspects are nipping at his heels.

In 20 years people will still know who Ronald Reagan was. Can Maher or Matthews say the same?
President Reagan – leader of the greatest nation for 8 years.
Maher and Matthews – talk show host on cable TV
President Reagan’s name sakes USS Ronald Reagan CVN-76 and Reagan Internation Airport.
The only name sake fitting of Maher would be an outhouse.
SPIFF1669 on May 2, 2007 at 4:30 PM
Maher’s an idiot, but I hate to say he did make me laugh. His jibe at Fred! was just for kicks, but his shots at Rudy were more accurate.
Reagan was an individual, and as such he can’t be reproduced. The Republicans have fantastic candidates for 2008; I am still puzzled as to why there’s this so-called “gloom” over the candidates when in fact rarely has the line-up been so good.
McCain, Fred!, Romney and Giuliani would all make great Presidents. I wouldn’t trade them for Hillary, Obama and Edwards for nothing.
Baphomet on May 2, 2007 at 4:39 PM
This is rich!
All these parasitical liberal hypocrites bad-mouthing conservatives, Ronald Reagan, and the Reagan Revolution, while they continue to worship JFK and get misty-eyed over the “Camelot” years!
Hey Chrissy Matthews, just how many times did your network show something about the Kennedy’s during the weekends on “Headliners & Legends”?
kevcad on May 2, 2007 at 4:47 PM
MSNBC, isn’t that the cable network reknowned for “name calling”?
Sorry Imus.
Oh, and Bill, better to look like the front end of a basset hound than sound like the back end. heh.
fogw on May 2, 2007 at 4:54 PM
Saying Chris Matthews has a liberal bias is like saying Adolph Eichman wasn’t very pro-jewish.
stonemeister on May 2, 2007 at 4:57 PM
I have never made a comment about weight or looks on any forum. One of the reasons is that I don’t feel it adds to the debate. However, in this instance, I can’t resist. Bill Maher is perhaps one of the most physically unattractive people I have ever seen. He has no business commenting on anyone’s appearance. Having said that, he added nothing to the debate by making that comment.

Reading about those two morons makes it difficult to keep my lunch down.
rplat on May 2, 2007 at 5:20 PM
On the bright side:
- Mr. Reagan was, and remains, great.
- The consideration of Mr. Thompson’s run is making lefties very nervous – see BM, CM and JaHerer22, for a good sampling.
- Mr. Giuliani makes them just as nervous.
- The conservatives “love” gays. Bill Maher said so.
- The liberals don’t like gays. BM and CM smirked about them.
- The liberals don’t like ugly people. BM said so and CM fell into hystrical laughs about them.
P.S. Dogs are indignant.

There are worse things than being called a basset hound by a proboscis monkey.
Jim Treacher on May 2, 2007 at 5:42 PM
Wow, Maher and Matthews, that reminds me of how I describe Red Eye. It’s basically what any show starring Bill Maher or Chris Matthews wish they could be.
Wolfman on May 2, 2007 at 5:42 PM
I suspect there is worse than Basset Hounds
Basset Hound Breed Standard
Hound Group
General Appearance
The Basset Hound possesses in marked degree those characteristics which equip it admirably to follow a trail over and through difficult terrain. It is a short-legged dog, heavier in bone, size considered, than any other breed of dog, and while its movement is deliberate, it is in no sense clumsy. In temperament it is mild, never sharp or timid. It is capable of great endurance in the field and is extreme in its devotion.

Why does Chris Matthews giggle like my 11 year old daughter at a sleepover every time he interviews (or rather reaffirms) Bill Maher? You can just sense his pants getting wet when he asks him a question, it’s creepy.
commonsensehoosier on May 2, 2007 at 6:26 PM
I was amazed that Mathews actually got one thing right, when he correct Maher that it was Gore playing the fear card in 2000. Fear is the only thing the Republicans have?
Provide examples, Bill. And oh, the socialists would never play the fear card…
Would they?
Would they?
Would they?
Would they?

I throw a salute “her” way everytime I drive the 5 south past North Island. The Reagan is recently back home after a short (four month) surge-support deployment.
Freelancer on May 2, 2007 at 6:28 PM
Yes, Freelancer, I checked back in to write that she’s in port in San Diego. Toured the Midway last Saturday and saw the Ronald Reagan, in her majestic state, across the bay.
The Midway docent, and us Americans, had a great smile when a German tourist asked him “isn’t it true that the Japanese carriers are faster than the American ones?”. The docent calmly “…do you mean the ones we destroyed in the 2nd war?”.
Then “how much does it cost to maintain the Midway?”. Answer “When it was active, $1,5 million/day. However, the USS Ronald Reagan, across, $2,5 million/day”. I was thinking “chickenfeed for the powerhouse that we are”, smiled inwardly and never peeped.
Entelechy on May 2, 2007 at 6:35 PM
Entelechy,
I’m certain I would come out on the better end of a meeting for a cup of coffee, just to hear some of what you’ve experienced.
If you consider that while underway over 6,000 personnel and 85 aircraft are operated from the Reagan, the price tag per op-day is a pittance. If you consider that the potential firepower of two Nimitz-class carriers with attendant battle groups exceeds that of all but seven nations on earth, the world’s greatest bargain.
Freelancer on May 2, 2007 at 6:58 PM
I think Maher looks alot like disgraced televangelist Robert Tilton…On second thought, I think he is Robert Tilton. Praise de Lord!

Any relation?
profitsbeard on May 2, 2007 at 8:42 PM
Since I voted for Ronald Regan in 1980 and 1984 I feel it nessecary to comment. Maher’s (gay) cheap shot is a reflection of his ignorance. In my life time I have experienced the practice of drills for nuclear attack, the Cuban Missle crisis, the assasinations of JFK-MLK-RFK (Kruchev theory),civil rights riots, the war in Vietnam and all it created politically, the creation af the welfare state,Nixon debacle, the worse Jimmy Carter ( I lusted after a woman on national TV! recession, gas shortage.world wide disgrace,THEN RONALD REGAN ! Optimism, leadership, effectiveness,Ethics and values! Whats not to like Maher. Maher is a creep with money and a big mouth!
sonnyspats1 on May 2, 2007 at 8:52 PM
It just dawned on me BWWWAAAHAHAHAHA.*holding side* Maher is calling Repubs gay for supporting Ronald Regan yet calls Fred Thompsom Basset faced, uh gee I mean I really hadn’t noticed that about Fred I thought he might be a little IKEish. WTF Mayer are you saying you judge a man for his looks. HMM? Now thats GAY!
sonnyspats1 on May 2, 2007 at 9:03 PM
Ian, you gotta do that sound thing so that Matthews’s voice is all slow.
WisCon on May 2, 2007 at 9:12 PM
Bill Maher used to be funny, then, like many of the celebrities, he got political on us. And now, like many of the celebs, he should keep his ignorance to himself. Not only is he dumb and not funny at all, he’s quite mean. Chris Mathews, good Christ! The only time I’ve watched his show was when Zell Miller called him out for being so obnoxious and idiotic. Now that was funny! When Mathews talks in this clip, it sounds like he spits when pronouncing his p’s. Painful to listen to.
4shoes on May 2, 2007 at 9:26 PM
Geez, some college girl recerntly got hauled in by her college for reeducation camp for saying, “That’s so gay.” She claimed that it meant, “Lame.” (Which indeed is how High Schoolers use it – but her protest was ignored and denigrated.)
How come Maher gets a pass? How come that girl had to endure totalitarian indoctrination weekend and Maher gets a big har har from Matthews?
Where’s the Gay lobby that is so offended all the time or it is all a fraud? Only be offended when it can be used as a political club.
(I know the answer – don’t bother. It is indeed a fraud. What I want to see is these people being held responsible for their hypocrisy – no passes, ever.)

Hey Maher you must be jealous from the post here about Fred! dating Lorrie Morgan. The women go crazy bout Fred! the man! (ZZ-Top Sharp Dressed Man)
sonnyspats1 on May 2, 2007 at 9:54 PM
Matthews and Maher would do well to wish for the success of mild-mannered, fairly decent men such as President Bush and Senator Thompson. If those fail, after them, one way or another, comes the flood: Maybe the Americans will elect the flesh-rending President I think they’ve needed all along, and maybe the British, Australians, and whoever remain of the Europeans will elect rulers of their own who likewise are “red in tooth and claw.” Or maybe the free nations will merely go on dithering until muslims rule the West. If Matthews and Maher would listen, I’d warn them that they won’t like me as an imam, with the Quran in one hand and a scimitar in the other. I’ll be out to destroy the people who thoughtlessly left me in a position to make such a choice: first the Left, then the center, then the Right.
