Close. Audioslave (Rage w/Chris Cornell instead of de la Rocha) played smack dab in the middle of Havana a couple years ago. I guess Morello got his foot in the door with Castro or something.

The DVD is actually pretty rockin’. Crowd was going nuts, but I kept looking for the snipers on the balconies.

I admit I’ve become an anti-entertainment militant extremist (of sorts). I don’t expect everyone to agree. DaveS understands the idiocy of RATM et al, but figures it’s just music, not philosophy and I’ll give him that. My belief is that music and entertainment has the power to influence us more than we realize. Obviously I enjoyed Dr Strangelove. It’s message is that anti-communism is paranoia. Funny as hell. Great movie making. But a message that could get us all killed. Did we know back in the day that John Lennon was a communist sympathizer? No, we thought he was Jesus Christ. Now I use my musical skills to advance a positive message every Sunday morning. I strongly assert getting a hymn stuck in your head in the morning is good for you.

I’ll see your Rage and raise you a Ben Folds.

If you’d like to hear RATM pwned, give a listen to Richard Cheese’s “Lounge Against the Machine” CD, complete with cover of “Guerilla Radio.”

Buck, dittos on most of your comments, especially garbage in/garbage out. I was buried in the music biz for a couple years, late 70’s, so way before this kind of garbage. Got out after seeing too many lives trashed/ruined/ended. Preferred stuff like Styx, Yes, Nugent. Never would have listened to RATM, never cared for electric harsh. Early Quiet Riot was about as much metal as I could take.

Like I said, all hail glorious proletarian judicial system!

The irony being that they still want to try them at all highlights how dicked up the whole approach to fighting terrorism is to some people. You hate Bush etc that much that you want them DEAD, and you STILL want to put them on trial?!

And yes, sadly, I think some of their songs rocked. Remember that is was basically Korn and Korn rip-offs when they started to show up on the radar..

And forged rite, you’re correct… their style draws heavily from the “blaxploitation” style. But, honestly, they took that sound and created one of the most original and distinctive sounds of the 90’s, and that’s saying something.

Yeah… I got my first Digitech Whammy pedal about 10 years ago so that I could replicate Morello’s sound. Actually, it’s the only one I ever got. It’s sitting on the floor about 2 feet from me.

No, they don’t. I remember going to get Evil Empire because everyone was talking about it and thinking it was going to be great, but after listening to it i thought it sounded like a cheesy soundtrack to the 70’s blaxploitation movies that used to come on at 1am. And speaking of Evil Empire, the cover for that cd was a white kid wearing a banner that said evil empire, and in this little rant he says “every last rich white one of ‘em…..”. He’s obviously a racist sack of sh*t, but he gets away with it because his racism is directed towards whites. They’re nothing but a code pink rally turned up to 11.

Someday you’ll be older and realize you’ve been had. For decades I dedicated a large part of my life to the pursuit of rock. Our collective desire to be entertained causes us to celebrate the wrong people and their ideas. RATM by themselves are nobody. But in context of the greater entertainment culture they are an example of how far things have come. But hey, who cares right? As long as the guitars sound good.

[Tom Morello] was a really nice, interesting and well liked guy in high school so the whole “angry rocker guy” “hard knock life” act is contrived.

I don’t think so. If I recall, he went to Harvard, and dropped out to do the rock thing… I think he picked up the commie bug in college. He one of those dudes who stands in front of shopping malls protesting whatever and gets himself arrested from time to time.
