Video: Rage Against the Machine rages against Bush

posted at 5:42 pm on May 1, 2007 by Ian

The best, er, most deranged parts are at the beginning:

Michelle provides a transcript of the most despicable part:

And this current administration is no exception. It should be hung and tried and shot, as any war criminal should be. For the challenges that we face, they go way beyond administrations, way beyond elections, way beyond every four years of pulling levers, way beyond that. Because this whole rotten system has become so vicious and cruel, that in order to sustain itself, it needs to destroy entire countries and profit from their reconstruction in order to survive. And that’s not a system that changes every four years, that’s a system that we have to break down, generation after generation after generation after generation…

Fortunately, I can say I never was a fan.

Why correct yourself, Ian? The best parts are the most deranged parts. These guys are entertainers right? I mean, this isn’t serious commentary, right? RIGHT?!

gryphon202 on May 1, 2007 at 5:46 PM

Zach de la Rocha has been a tool since he left Hardstance. That was the only good band he was in, and he played guitar. His vocals suck and the band is unoriginal and bland.

His cousin (Mike de la Rocha) was student body president at UCLA when I went there. He also thought he was a huge revolutionary even though he was from Irvine. None of the de la Rochas know what they’re talking about and are so much a part of the ‘system’ they can’t even see their own hypocrisy.

Trooper on May 1, 2007 at 5:53 PM

Honestly, what else can a band called Rage Against the Machine do? They’re pretty much required to, you know, rage, against, like, the machine, right?

Of course, these losers probably drop the pose when it comes to global warming and other Democrat causes.

Kensington on May 1, 2007 at 5:54 PM

These guys are a classic example of how clueless “rockstars” are. They worship che guevera, and castro, yet if they did the same thing (criticise the government) under either of those two, they would be taken out and shot. But in this country they are multi millionaires for doing it. The hypocracy is undeniable. Meanwhile college students, and alt-rockers, etc. think these morons are brilliant political minds.

bmac on May 1, 2007 at 5:55 PM

Also a classic example of what are children are taught by the ‘system’. Skool be cool!

Limerick on May 1, 2007 at 5:58 PM

So let me get this straight, this “whole rotten system” is “vicious and cruel”, so members of the current administration need to be “hung and tried and shot” (presumably not in that order)?

Doesn’t make a lot of sense, but then again, what do you expect from the guys that played a “Free Tibet” benefit in front of a backdrop of El Che?

Citizen Duck on May 1, 2007 at 6:01 PM

Correction: De la Rocha is from Irvine also. Straight outta Irvine. His dad is some kinda militant chicano. De la Rocha’s gone from straight-edge, to hip-hop, to communist agitator. That’s quite a trip. Still no identity in sight. Maybe when he’s older (he’s 37) …

PRCalDude on May 1, 2007 at 6:01 PM

God, I hate RATM, always hated them. Crappy, crappy music. Kids used to love that crap when I was in high school. My thought was, Anarchists? *REALLY?* God, what lame garbage. People blathering on with a bunch of dumb reckless political sloganeering and nonsense that they are probably clueless about. Now note this is before I had *any* interests in politics, but my BS detector was well enough honed to know what a crock RATM was, and that was even before hearing them, which made me think they were crappier. In closing RATM is quite possibly the crappiest band ever in world history.

Bad Candy on May 1, 2007 at 6:02 PM

Is there anything else that needs to be said but “Tards!”?

Metro on May 1, 2007 at 6:05 PM

Yes, RATM sucks even more than the Spice Girls, or any of the really crappy bands you’re thinking of right now.

Bad Candy on May 1, 2007 at 6:05 PM

RAtM are sorta like the Ted Rall of music; they both possess blind hatred towards anyone and anything to the right of Marx, questionable talent, and delusions of relevance.

ZK on May 1, 2007 at 6:19 PM

Because this whole rotten system has become so vicious and cruel, that in order to sustain itself, it needs to destroy entire countries and profit from their reconstruction in order to survive.

Wait, is De La Rocha referring to when Sony Music BMG told him back in ’98-’99 that they’d nullify his multimillion-dollar contract if he didn’t end his extended Mexico vacation and finish the Battle of L.A. CD?

Wooden plank? Hi! Yeah, let me introduce you to Thine Eye…

Sadly young America is stupid enough to fall for it.

naliaka on May 1, 2007 at 8:14 PM

They broke up right about the time Bush got elected because they could see their brand of bulls**t was going out of style and there was no money in it at the time. And they’re getting back together now because they see they’re brand of bulls**t is back in style and they can cash in on it.

…and then Tom Morrello dicked around with his effects pedals for 20 minutes.

Jim Treacher on May 1, 2007 at 7:35 PM

Exactly. I saw Morrello on Mtv years ago on what was billed as a guitar lesson, but all he did was make annoying noises with effects pedals for thirty minutes.

frankj on May 1, 2007 at 8:43 PM

At least these guys are upfront about being scumbags. The real dangers are the Springsteens, Taylors, and Mellencamps, et al, who indoctrinate to happier melodies. For example, now that I have a wife and kids who depend on me, Hungry Heart is an anthem to abandoned children of clueless parents. And yes, I sang along with the arena too. We should be selective of who we let influence us, even subliminally. Garbage in, garbage out.

I went to school with Tom Morello. In fact, he went to a recent reunion and it was hilarious to see him posturing — trying to act aloof and all, pretending he didn’t know people he went to school with for more than 8 years. Why go if you can’t stand the people who make up “the machine?” I’m not sure if he was expecting everyone to fall all over him — no one did. I suspect most people didn’t know much about his band since he plays to 20-something crowds.

He was a really nice, interesting and well liked guy in high school so the whole “angry rocker guy” “hard knock life” act is contrived.

But it sells. Funny how captitalism works in favor of these commies, isn’t it?

Sensible Mom on May 1, 2007 at 10:15 PM

You guys are beginning to become hillariously predictable. Everytime a celebrity or whatever comes along and says something stupid, you have these threads where you try to out-do each other in expressing your long-standing dislike of their work.

Yes, RATM are morons, but they are morons that seriously rock. Their junior high, Soviet Union hat-wearing, Che-worshiping idiocy is part of their charm.

[Tom Morello] was a really nice, interesting and well liked guy in high school so the whole “angry rocker guy” “hard knock life” act is contrived.

I don’t think so. If I recall, he went to Harvard, and dropped out to do the rock thing… I think he picked up the commie bug in college. He one of those dudes who stands in front of shopping malls protesting whatever and gets himself arrested from time to time.

Someday you’ll be older and realize you’ve been had. For decades I dedicated a large part of my life to the pursuit of rock. Our collective desire to be entertained causes us to celebrate the wrong people and their ideas. RATM by themselves are nobody. But in context of the greater entertainment culture they are an example of how far things have come. But hey, who cares right? As long as the guitars sound good.

Buck Turgidson on May 1, 2007 at 11:50 PM

but they are morons that seriously rock.
DaveS on May 1, 2007 at 10:51 PM

No, they don’t. I remember going to get Evil Empire because everyone was talking about it and thinking it was going to be great, but after listening to it i thought it sounded like a cheesy soundtrack to the 70′s blaxploitation movies that used to come on at 1am. And speaking of Evil Empire, the cover for that cd was a white kid wearing a banner that said evil empire, and in this little rant he says “every last rich white one of ‘em…..”. He’s obviously a racist sack of sh*t, but he gets away with it because his racism is directed towards whites. They’re nothing but a code pink rally turned up to 11.

DaveS on May 2, 2007 at 12:22 AM

Umm, no. Green Day are morons that seriously rock.

Them too. But Rage rocks in a more original way.

And forged rite, you’re correct… their style draws heavily from the “blaxploitation” style. But, honestly, they took that sound and created one of the most original and distinctive sounds of the 90′s, and that’s saying something.

DaveS on May 2, 2007 at 12:26 AM

I have never liked this ridiculous “band”. They came after my interest in “renegade” rockers who “raged” against the capitalist machine (while convincing millions of idiotic, “alienated” teens to spend $17 each on some crappyass CD) had become an allergic reaction to that sort of thing.

I love how the “compassionate” Left never shirks from calling for the lynching of those that don’t agree with them. Nice.

RightWinged on May 2, 2007 at 2:15 AM

That makes at least 3 people who have noticed that

Like I said, all hail glorious proletarian judicial system!

The irony being that they still want to try them at all highlights how dicked up the whole approach to fighting terrorism is to some people. You hate Bush etc that much that you want them DEAD, and you STILL want to put them on trial?!

And yes, sadly, I think some of their songs rocked. Remember that is was basically Korn and Korn rip-offs when they started to show up on the radar..

Buck, dittos on most of your comments, especially garbage in/garbage out. I was buried in the music biz for a couple years, late 70′s, so way before this kind of garbage. I admit I’ve become an anti-entertainment militant extremist (of sorts). I don’t expect everyone to agree. DaveS understands the idiocy of RATM et al, but figures it’s just music, not philosophy and I’ll give him that. My belief is that music and entertainment has the power to influence us more than we realize. Obviously I enjoyed Dr Strangelove. It’s message is that anti-communism is paranoia. Funny as hell. Great movie making. But a message that could get us all killed. Did we know back in the day that John Lennon was a communist sympathizer? No, we thought he was Jesus Christ. Now I use my musical skills to advance a positive message every Sunday morning. I strongly assert getting a hymn stuck in your head in the morning is good for you.
