Bush signed the veto with a pen given to him by Robert Derga, the father of Marine Corps Reserve Cpl. Dustin Derga, who was killed in Iraq on May 8, 2005. The elder Derga spoke with Bush two weeks ago at a meeting the president had with military families at the White House.

Derga asked Bush to promise to use the pen in his veto. On Tuesday, Derga contacted the White House to remind Bush to use the pen, and so he did. The 24-year-old Dustin Derga served with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion 25th Marines from Columbus, Ohio. The five-year Marine reservist and fire team leader was killed by an armor-piercing round in Anbar Province.

Mallard, I’m trying to find your post, but there are two articles on “Jabba-the-Hut” (er, uh, I meant Tokyo-Rosie) and I’m interested in reading your post, where’s it at?

The key issue is the perceptions of the public. He needed to show a stronger belief in what he was saying and take a stronger stance against the defeatists on the Hill.

I agree, he really needed to put some passion behind such a critical issue, and he needed to really get passionate when he spoke of the evil we face and that it’s the dems that are placing politics above our nations security and our troops safety by not funding them.

Also, Bush has never been a good public speaker, he’s not stupid as the democraps like to paint him. You can be highly intelligent and be a really lousy public speaker, and unfortunately while Bush is intelligent, he’s not “The Great Communicator” Reagen was, and at this point in our history with the evil we are facing I really wish he was.

I knew Bush wasn’t going to take the tough stance after his third sentence when he said, “… and my desire to work with congress to resolve this matter as quickly as possible.”

He’s playing the nice guy under the misconception that this will help in getting congress to pass a clean bill. I have to admit that playing tough would likely cause many in congress to just want to push back that much harder, but playing nice gives the dems some consolation that they may have put him into a corner.

In the few instances where he spoke hard words, his demeanor and expressions were almost commical.

I simply can’t accept that the majority of the American public are for a pullout and all the devastating results that accompany such action. But the dems are out there saying that they have a mandate based on the last election.

The president needs to show some real resolve in the next few weeks, or this truly will become a lost cause. I started to spell out exactly what that means, but it is too depressing, and the majority of you already know far too well what a withdrawal means to Iraq, the middle east as a whole, America, her allies, and her world standing.

Once again a thumbsucking liberal (honora) taking things out of context and/or manipulating events to further their inept, inane, and subversive agenda of dividing our nation during a time of war when we should be uniting to defeat the clear and present danger of a fascist Islamic ideology that wants to snuff out our freedoms, our nation, and our lives!

First of all honora, you need to get your facts straight (oh, what was I thinking, I forgot, liberal thumbsuckers don’t care about those pesky little things called “facts” just like all the moonbat “truthers”!).

Bush didn’t place the banner on the carrier that read “Mission Accomplished” nor did he ever in his speech that day utter the words “Mission Accomplished.”

In addition, the referrence to “Mission Accomplished” was addressing the completion of the main mission in Iraq which was to defeat Saddam’s military and removing him from power, which the military did accomplish, therefore the “Mission” was “Accomplished.”

Also, in that same speech on the carrier that day Bush clearly communicated (at least clearly to those with half a brain or aren’t blinded to the truth for some warped agenda) that while the major combat phase of the war was successfully “Accomplished” that there were still many difficult hurdles to overcome (like establishing a free and democratic government, etc.) and there were still difficult times ahead! But of course those are just trivial facts you thumbsucking liberals choose to gloss over because it doesn’t support your “war for oil” and “imperialist America” or whatever your warped ideology/agenda of the day is!

Perhaps you and your girlfriend Tokyo-Rosie should move somewhere in the Middle East under Taliban and AQ control since you have it so bad in this country and our government is so terrible! Should you and Tokyo-Rosie decide to go (one can only hope) when you arrive there be careful what you say, what you eat, what you read, what movies you watch, and don’t listen to music as it’s un-Islamic and not being careful of any of the above could very easily get you stoned to death, beheaded, or just plain shot in the head by their Virtue and Vice Squads…oh and one other thing, I would advise you tell Tokyo-Rosie on your trip over to go back to laying with men and not women, Shari law tends to really frown on lesbians and that is a sure ticket to being hung at the end of a rope in the local town square or stadium!

And I thought you conservative boys were all about less government action? So what’s your beef exactly?

I’m all for a tied up Congress that can’t pass anything in normal circumstances. But when you’re in the middle of a war and the Democrats are unfamiliar with the concept of loyal opposition its a serious problem. Ted Kennedy gives speechs about repliving the Vietnam era. It’s clear he doesn’t care about the aftermath of that conflict. The Democrats long for passivity. The death of millions of Vietnamese, Cambodians or Iraqis is a distraction to the latest legislation on healthcare or abortion. The fact that it erodes American credibility is irrelevant.

There is more going on behind the scenes than any of us can imagine. To the libs: either pull in the same direction, or provide HELPFUL critism/advice to advance us to victory. If you can’t do that, then, with apologies to Dick Cheney, go f*ck yourselves.

Wise up. The American people would like to see that the president is engaged in this fight on a visceral level. God knows the moonbats are. Bush’s statement, while spot on with respect to the facts, left me cold.

Well “seminar caller” comes to mind often with honora so it seems usually that we’re really rebutting a talking points fax rather than a person. Still, get tired of the Left trying to force the terms of debate into their one-dimensional, artificial constructs, so, got to fight back.

Well, I had understood Iraqi Freedom was the invasion and successful deposing and incarceration of Saddam Hussein’s regime. That was the immediate task to accomplish before anything else could be initiated.
What planet are you on? DOn’t you know the first thing about military stages of engagement with the enemy? First is to win the battle. Bush was absolutely correct to celebrate – which was simply a cheer expressly for the troops for a job well done -the brilliant tactical and logistical feat carried out by our military. Guess you don’t think that transporting an army/navy/air force and everything it requires thousands of miles, over an ocean, over hostile nations, to the battlefield, invading the enemy’s territory which is always to the defender’s advantage is no big deal. That displays your collossal ignorance of how hard it is to do. Real military operations are not Hollywood productions. The leadership of every other nation on the planet noticed, especially the Russians and the Chinese – and have tasked their itelligence and military stategists to full-time studying everything about how the US pulled it off – but it is meanless to you?
You throw about “frat boy.” Lots of guys are frat boys, so quit the sneer. Quite a few are standing in Iraq and Afghanistan, between radical fascists who want to cut your head off and you, are you doing anything as significant with your life?
Is Nancy Pelosi a sorority girl? DO you find it condescending to be called a girl at your age? WHy do women snarl and spit when they think they’re being dimished by being called girls, but turn on a dime and think it’s okay to constantly refer to men dismissively as “boys” when they’re taking bullets and IEDs for you.
