It is not known whether he managed to say that with a straight face.

Knowing the support he has in America, I’d say yes. Think of the scores of thousands of academics, peace activists, etc., who also say that with anything from a straight face to spittle-slinging, vein-popping, Bushitler, Truth-to-Power screams. Along with those shades, that support should pretty much keep his mellow from being harshed.

I think it’s safe to say the Iranians were holding the FBI agent. Why he was released is probably synonymous with why the British sailors were released. They want to show themselves to be responsible citizens of the world – despite their nuclear ambitions. I think it’s politics.
