France was playing slide it under the table with Saddam.

France has rolled over many times and let America do the heavy lifting and the sacrificing of our lives to save theirs only to stab us in the back time and again.

Now France is rolling over once again only this time there's no rolling back.

Frankistan will be a reality in fifty years and France is rushing to embrace the new Sharia masters and their newly acquired French nukes.

The screen cap of Chirac is precious, the proper caption for it is, (add as much nasal intonation as you can)
mon dieu Frrawnnce ees scrreuuuwed!

Sometimes I wonder why I go here. As if it weren't bad enough that I seem to find quite a few Francophobes here, I find people who actually want to believe a BS poll put out by AL-REUTERS, of all news sources!

I'm ashamed of you. The country is undergoing horrific victimization by leftist politicians who couldn't give a damn about their own country, and all you can do is sink into schadenfreude! Well I'm not tempted. Not at all.
I’m reminded of the Dennis Miller line about having to chisel the armpit hair off the Statue of Liberty before we could put it up.
Some way to thank France, considering that they had the most expensive part to deal with.

My parents were in France two months ago, and it sure wasn't what some of you people want to make it out to be. There are poor people who live in the streets, it's crowded, and there are a lot of unpleasant things that politicians like Chirac led them into. But it's not all the unfriendly environment you seem to want to view it as. There are a lot of nice folks there who're unhappy about the political and social situation created by their own politicians, and if you don't know the situation or try to figure it out, you have no business trying to be the judge.

Yes, the interesting thing isn't that the French are anti-American. We already know Europe is overwhelmingly anti-American. The fascinating thing is that the French are actually anti-French.

That's fascinating because it suggests that an inherent emergent feature of the welfare state may actually be national self-loathing. And this, in turn, is fascinating because those most in favor of expanding the European-style welfare state in America are peculiarly defensive about the idea that they might be portrayed as "anti-American"--a defensiveness that's striking because it's extremely rare to find that claim actually being made.

Maybe the reason for their reaction is that they realize anti-nationalism is, indeed, a substantive element of their political agendas, and that, whether it's actually being made or not, the claim not only potentially can but probably should be made more often than it is.

Germans don't think too highly of the USA either.

Now they believe that the United States is a greater threat to world peace than Iran. This was the by-no-means-surprising result of a Forsa opinion poll commissioned by Stern magazine. Young Germans in particular -- 57 percent of 18-to-29-year-olds, to be precise -- said they considered the United States more dangerous than the religious regime in Iran.

Quick poll: Who gives a rat’s arse what the french think of us?

Mazztek on April 27, 2007 at 6:38 PM

I don't have time to read every link to every post either. The difference is I don't comment on the ones I don't read.

The article was actually about how much the French hate themselves more than Americans hate the French.

From the cited article:

Relations between France and the United States plunged following Paris's fierce opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq

Not true. Relations plunged when France (and others) denied U.S. planes flyover approval for our raid against Libya. If they have fallen since then, well, apparently the frogs can understand that they deserve it.

Well, let's see...
http://members.aol.com/spursfan50/davidallen/defeats.htm "The earliest French military aid, led by the Comte d'Estaing, was relatively unsuccessful. The battles fought were inconsequential and the losses hurt the American public's enthusiasm in the Franco-American alliance. " From:http://members.aol.com/TeacherNet/Revolutionarywar.html#Foreign

http://members.aol.com/spursfan50/davidallen/newport.htm "In Boston and Charleston there were riots between French and American sailors. D'Estaing decided that it would be better to leave the continent for a while, so on November 1, 1778, he sailed for the West Indies to fight British troops stationed there. The only apparent benefit of d'Estaing's first campaign in the United States was that when he left for the West Indies, the British sent 5,000 men there to counter his attack. This meant that there were fewer British soldiers to fight in America. It is easy to see why the Americans were losing faith in their French saviors."

http://members.aol.com/spursfan50/davidallen/savannah.htm The French started firing cannons at midnight, but were ordered to stop two hours later. Most of the shells they were firing were landing in their own trenches. Generals soon discovered that the cannoneers were drunk, having consumed an entire keg of rum that night. The bombardment resumed at 4 a.m. with new artillerymen. Shells continued to rain on the city for four days. At this point, d'Estaing's men convinced him of the vulnerability of their position. He decided to make a bold attack on Savannah on October 8. When he made his attack, d'Estaing's fleet was met by the British and brutally defeated

What I got from that story is that sixty two percent of Americans (the one who don't hate France) don't know what's what. Of that number thirty five percent (the ones who like France) aught to be publicly flogged.

I can’t believe we beat the British: after all, they’ve been killing the French since long before Agincourt.

And the Germans positively love them … other than the whole invasion-once-in-a-while thang. Then again, I guess you’d feel warm and fuzzy for any country that let you invade that easily, over and over.

Really interesting.

Professor Blather on April 27, 2007 at 6:54 PM

Well you have to take into account that the British have killed so many French over the centuries not out of any animosity toward them necessarily, but because during those centuries, the French have thrown themselves on British swords every chance they got. I imagine the Germans like them now because the Germans have recently started trying to be French.

I can attest to this. My fiance is from France and is currently in Marseille. All politics aside, the French feeling f'ing rotten about the estrangement in the friendship with Americans. Yes, they love to put us down about everything cultural, but in a jokey manner, like friends who hammer each other. They know about how we hammer them, too, and enjoy the zingers.

If we Americans had absolutely no friends in the world, we'd be our own bestfriend and not worry about it. But we are unique in this regard. The French do miss the American friend they can bash with their chauvinistic worst, the one friend who comes up grinning with something even more garish and culturally horrible for them to bash.

If you can make sense out of that, you deserve a medal.

Blacklake on April 28, 2007 at 12:17 AM

Blacklake, I can name you myriad of such examples, from all over (Western) Europe. They adore living here, the SUVs, big houses, pools, etc. while they belabor Bush on Kyoto, the war, the American colloquialism, bla, bla, bla.

In Western Europe there are only two major parties, the Sociali*ts, and the centrists (who name themselves the conservatives). It's all just a matter of far-left or center-left. The hypocrisy and lack of realization about their fakery (in lifestyle), while preaching abstract idealism (environmentalism, global goodness, peace, equality, rights for terrorists, etc.) is incredible.

How strange it must have been for these French troops and their new-found colonial allies, some of whom had fought each other as enemies barely fifteen years earlier, to stand shoulder to shoulder in armed conflict with France’s ancient enemy and the colonist’s blood kin! In the end, these French soldiers became the hard anvil upon which the new American nation was forged and the chains of British imperial domination were finally broken.

Bugger it. If Sarkozy wins I'm still buying a bottle of Evian for the first time in six years.

The politics over there are damned peculiar, though. I work with a Frenchman who's here in the US largely because, according to him, he's disgusted with the underachievement and laziness of the French welfare culture. He's essentially fled his country over these complaints, and they read like a virtual laundry list of Sarkozy campaign issues.

But who is he hoping comes out on top in the run-off election? Royal. Because he considers Sarkozy to be pro-Bush.

If you can make sense out of that, you deserve a medal.

Bush is a pretty good Spanish speaker, that’s not good enough?
Yes, he is, but I guess being bilingual isn't as good as being multilingual.

Had a bunch of black kids today tell me that their version of English is just fine as long as they understand each other. My African (born in Uganda, grew up in Morocco) assistant set them straight on that one. Blistered the hair right off their heads. I love her when she gets all uppity like that.

And whatever you do, do NOT call her African-American. She's African. She's American. But you call her African-American and she'll kick your pasty white butt.

And on topic, who the heck cares what the French think? They have been retired to the rocking chair of world history while the rest of us have to change their depends.

>I hear they don’t even use 1 square of toilet paper.

Well, they don't go at all. That's why they're, well, full of it.

>they did give us that statue of a pretty lady named Liberty in New York.

They've been trying to give away liberty for a loooong time.

The French hating themselves more than anyone else hates them has always been a long standing joke but I guess this poll does quite a bit to actually verify that joke which is France.

To be fair to the French though, they did give us that statue of a pretty lady named Liberty in New York.

Also, in defense of France regarding their performance during WWII, they did lose over 100,000 people in that one month of fighting. It's not so much that they gave up without fighting, it's just that they were so thoroughly beaten by the Germans who were prepared for the war they brought and France which was a bit too prepared to fight the previous war.

Entelechy links:

“I think America is ready for a multilingual president,” Clinton said during a campaign stop at a charter school in Greenville, S.C

Bush is a pretty good Spanish speaker, that's not good enough?

Or does she count fake southern accent and ebonics as different languages?

"I think America is ready for a multilingual president," Clinton said during a campaign stop at a charter school in Greenville, S.C

Jim Treacher, we need to research the origin of "multilingual". What a dumb woman! After the dems made fun of this president's accent.

But to consider a variety of local accents "multilingual". I'm on the floor. Wait until she 'speaks' Arabic and Spanish! And maybe French...Yiddish, who knows? This chick is crazy or really not smart at all. Or she thinks we're all idiots, or the idiots think she's that smart...

I can’t even get into a discussion about that place “France”. Next to Canada it has become the most pathetic waste of a country, irrelevant and absolutely deplorable. They deserve a Socialist President, keep that country sliding down the spiral. Unfortunately it will become an Islamic state and we will eventually have to deal with them.

americaslaststand

You need to look around if you think Canada is first on the list in terms of being a waste of a country. Our conservatives are in power (yes, with a minority government). Our troops have taken the lead in Afghanistan and are actively going after the Taliban in combat, not peacekeeping missions. Our Prime Minister stands by Israel publicly and their right to defend themselves.

Yes, Canada is still far to the left. Economically, our budgets have been balanced for the last 9 years or so and our GDP to debt ratio is under 30% since our debt has been paid down to under $250 Billion.

As to our Muslim situation, they are still a small percentage of the population and not as vocal as those in Europe. We've had one terror ring arrested. In terms of what the rest of Europe is undergoing, I believe that Canada is naive in terms of their understanding of the Muslim threat. But if you think we are ANYWHERE near being European, you really need to look again.
