It seems to me that knowing how to spell the name of such a vital geographic location as IraQ is much more important than knowing how to spell…say…”potato”.

The poll about the situation in Iraq getting worse is horrible stats and no credible agency would ask that question. It would be like asking, “In your opinion, is it warmer today than yesterday?”

First, we have metrics that would show us how warm it is today and how warm it was yesterday. People’s opinions don’t count. It either is warmer or it isn’t. Russert and NBC are trying to turn the perception of defeat into de facto defeat. This isn’t statistics, polling or journalism. It’s propaganda.

Second, the question is vague. It’s intentionally vague so as to be leading. People hear that the situation in Iraq sucks and they get some specifics (although they are insulated from the big picture). So when the pollster calls and asks them about the situation, the person who answers is preconditioned to answer the way they think they should answer.

Plus, there is no indication of how the polls were conducted, response rates, demographics, etc. Just looking at the questions makes me doubt the veracity of the results, but I bet if I saw the methodology, I’d be even more irate.

I’m not a commander on the ground in Iraq. Why would someone poll me on “how the war is going”?

Oh, wait, if they fed me misinformation and then polled me on the crap they fed me, then I could be used as a tool for more propaganda. Brilliant!!

The issue is not that it was spelled with a ‘k’ but that it was done by the self-important father of the American news of today, the moral authority of the news domain.

How many years has Iraq been in the news now? Here in the U.S.A.? We don’t spell harbour either, even though it’s correct in the dictionary.

Setting aside the fact that 49% of people think that things in Iraq are either the same or better according to the same poll, looks like the majority media’s “if it bleeds it leads” strategy is having some effect.
