Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) appeared on the Steve Malzberg show today to discuss whether Sen. Harry Reid should resign as Senate Majority Leader for declaring that the war is lost. Inhofe also criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her recent trip to Syria. Click to play.
Update: Rep. Duncan Hunter is also calling for Reid’s resignation as Senate Majority Leader.
(Hunter story h/t MM)
Update: The House has passed the Iraq withdrawal bill, 218-208. Waiting on a roll call. The bill faces a certain veto, and the game of chicken over a war in the middle of that war will commence.
Update: The President is unhappy. He’s calling for the Senate to go ahead and pass it so he can veto it.

I give this about two weeks before it runs out of gas. But I’m glad to see at least a couple of Congressmen have the cajones to say it publicly on the record.

If the Dems believe that the SML should be leading America to defeat, then let him stay. If not, he should resign, and if he refuses, then he should be recalled.

Neither Senator’s Inhofe nor Hunter are going far enough, instead of calling for Harry “I’m a fucking traitor” Reids resignation they should be calling for him to be charged with treason.

Can we get Senator Inhofe on the Fred Thompson ticket?
fogw on April 25, 2007 at 9:29 PM
There needs to be a serious movement to oust Reid. Is anyone taking this up? Move America Forward? Anyone? Seriously, this is outrageous, and the troops themselves articulated it best in their letters to Reid that Michelle posted in two posts last week. It’s borderline, if not outright treason, no? I don’t think a single person could argue logically that his comments don’t aid the enemy while demoralizing the troops. The troops have until recently said the politics back home doesn’t affec them, so the Dems have kicked it up a notch, hoping for more deaths and chaos so that they can pick up more seats (Harry Reid already made giddily and openly noted that they’re going to pick up seats on the war) and the White House… Anyway, these men and women in serving in Iraq are intelligent people and recognize the “slow bleed” strategy being implemented by the Dems and they can’t simply brush it off anymore when they realize they could be fighting for nothing if they’re pulled out in a few months or the Dems cut their funding (which they want to do, but don’t have the balls to do).

First of all, do you really think that the troops give a rat’s a** what Reid says, aside from pissing them off? Seriously.
Second, this is one of the things I always object to. I really don’t like Reid, his comments are irresponsible and do make us look bad around the world but are not treasonous. I don’t think, as and objective, he’s doing this to purposefully aid the enemy. It’s just jingoistic language gone out of control, much akin to the idea of impeaching the President.
SouthernDem on April 25, 2007 at 10:07 PM
Oh, by the way, he should step down.
How thrilled would I be if a Dem actually supported that idea, instead of foolishly echoing his statement.

I also voted for Inhofe. OK (despite being a purple state) has some good Republicans, guys who could lead the party to victory in ‘08. No skeletons in their closets; men who could draw a sharp distinction between Republicans and Defeatocrats. Maybe this is Inhofe’s pre-announcement (I think Duncan Hunter has already announced).
Back to reality, though. . . .
SouthernDem,
The troops do care. Al Qaida, Iran and Syria know they can’t win militarily. Their strategy, as UBL has stated often, is to draw out any conflict until we give up on go home. Statements like Reid’s, indicate to UBL and the Mullahs that their strategy is working. It gives them recruiting fodder, which prolongs the chaos in Iraq. Unlike the American people, our enemies learned from Vietnam that no matter how strong the US military is, they can wear us down psychologically. Reid, Pelosi, Kennedy, Dean, et al have worked to erode American confidence and this has cost American lives. Reid knows it because, as the Veep just pointed out, this is part of the Democrat’s ‘08 strategy.
Dead American soldiers = more Democratic Senate seats. This is Harry Reid speaking. It may not be treason in a court of law, but it is despicable.
cmay on April 25, 2007 at 10:34 PM
I was in Baghdad in January and I still hear from troops there now. Yes, comments like Reid’s get to the troops, and yes, it bothers them. Such comments also get to our local allies and discourage them from helping us, since we might pull out and leave them on their own against the terrorists. Our allies in Iraq and our troops there know that statements like his encourage the enemy, and that more attacks are therefore likely. Pat Dollard has been posting emails that he has been getting from the troops after Reid’s comments. You should check them out. They’ll tell you more about the effect Reid’s comments are having than anything I can say.
Bryan on April 25, 2007 at 10:34 PM
“. . .until we give up on go home.” should be “. . .until we give up and go home.”
cmay on April 25, 2007 at 10:35 PM
Usually I would agree with your sentiment, but it’s pretty clear that Reid actions are designed solely to help the dems get votes in 08 with nothing except a lip service concern for the safety of the troops. Both he and Schumer were caught explaining how the politics of a loss in Iraq help them get votes.
Think about it, WHY in goodness name would anyone ever consider that line of thinking to the point where it would become a spoken idea? I’ll tell you all why….
Because Reid and Schumer are not normal. Normal people, IF that thought ever popped into their head, would dismiss it in a nano-second because the welfare of the troops and this nation come first and it is NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, okay to put personal gain above the lives of others and the reputation of this country.
So, yeah, anyone who speaks in that fashion IS in fact a traitor to this country even if their allegience is to themselves and not another country!

Nevada has recall! Finally something to energize conservatives.
Signature Requirement:
25% of the votes cast in the last election for the official being recalled
Circulation Time:
60 days
There was about 800,000 voters so I guess they would need 200,000 signatures to have a recall election. Let’s get busy!

I am tonight asking for the resignation of Senator Harry Reid.

faraway on April 25, 2007 at 10:41 PM
Guy, you’ve got to be kidding me! Not only does it affect the troops (I suppose you didn’t read the letters Malkin’ posted last week?), it emboldens the enemy greatly. And I don’t mean the same way it has been as the Dems have actively campaigned for failure which in turn will win them elections by default (that’s what this is all about if you hadn’t noticed). But you can’t come out and say the war is lost, I’m sorry that just un-f**king-acceptable. He is giving aid and comfort to the enemy, I’m sorry, but he is!
As one of those who wrote Michelle noted, future blood is on Reid’s hands. He’s just told these ragtag loser terrorists that they’re beating the greatest military in the world, which they aren’t even close to doing… We’re taking casualties because we’re fighting a war with a sissy strategy because we’re desperately trying to save civilians. The troops aren’t sissies by the way, it’s the policy. It’s just like people who don’t recognize the sad truth, that we’ll never solve Islamic terror because they are breeding and training their children to be like them, and when these kids feel it is their duty to their parents and their God to blow themselves up, there is no reform… it’s not like we’re talking a few dozen, we’re talking millions. You can’t go around handing out lollipops and think eventually they’ll see the light.
That’s a bit of a tangent, but the point was that the troops are doing all they’re allowed to do, but fighting “on the nice” (as is the policy) doesn’t cut it here. The “Iraq war” was a quick and easy one for them, what’s going on now isn’t a “civil war”, there’s some element of that, but it’s not all out “civil war”, it’s terrorists and other rogue elements attempting to disrupt a budding democracy. It’s a different war when you fight people who want to blow themselves up. Something people seem to never really understand. We don’t fight and get someone to surrender… who’s going to surrender? “Iraq” was beat within a matter of weeks, we’re not fighting “Iraq”, and there will be no peace treaty, etc.
Anyway, again this is all tangent… You can’t sit there and say that Reid saying we lost the war doesn’t significantly affect our guys and the enemy… I’m just too frustrated to go on, I’m sorry but that’s just idiotic to say it doesn’t affect them.
RightWinged on April 25, 2007 at 10:42 PM
I’m down, but as I said, there needs to be a large organized effort for anything to ever happen. Sadly, we’re not obnoxious like the left. We aren’t standing outside his house harassing his family, etc.
Hell, this douche actively aided the enemy and there’s no movement, but these middle aged people stand at the end of Church St. in downtown Burlington with their anti-war “IMPEACH BUSH” signs EVERY DAY, and our friggin’ state house just voted for impeachment (don’t ask me on what grounds… we all know “he lied”, but we also all know that it’s a lie to say that).

There used to be a saying that “Politics stopped at the water’s edge.” There was a sense that whatever problems we had in the US, they were our problems. And like a husband and wife fighting, we didn’t take it out of our house. We are Americans first.
This (and nearly everything the Dems have done since 2001) has shown us and the world that Reid and his ilk have more contempt for an American President than they do for terrorists. I can show you quotes from prominent Dems explaining away terrorist acts or blaming them on the US. What I can’t find are these same folks (Dean, Patty Murray, Pelosi, Harry Reid, Ted Kennedy) ever praising their Commander in Chief, Veep, Sec Def, or Sec State. They honestly have more polity towards anti-American mass murderers than people they have political differences with.

Sorry if I was harsh earlier, but you have to consider that this isn’t just rhetoric coming out of the Dems, it’s policy. They are actively seeking defeat (or victory for the enemy) and they won’t rest until it’s acheived. This has been clear for a while, but when the leader of the Dem controlled Senate tells them they are fighting for a lost cause, has threatened (though doesn’t have the balls to try) to cut off funding, are insisting on timetables, it’s tough to want to fight. They have to say “why are we wasting anymore time here if we’re not going to be allowed to finish the job?” You get what we’re saying now?

Trent Lott was forced to resign for a lot less. Reid SHOULD go. But the Republicans haven’t got the backbone to make him go. Nobody bothered to follow up on his real estate windfall that he hid from Congress - he called it a “technical error” and changed a report and got away with it. Just like nobody’s calling for Feinstein to be punished in any way for using her position to award her husband military contracts. The right thing to do is to keep piling on the pressure to make Reid step down, but the Republican party hasn’t got the testicular fortitude to do it.
Laura on April 25, 2007 at 11:56 PM
I still hold out faint hope that some in the Democrat party are beginning to understand what their position, and the election results of last November will cost them. I still hold the belief that we can, and will win the fight in Iraq.
Unfortunately, there is still the possibility that the house of representatives will refuse further funding for the troops in the field, unless Bush uses those funds to withdrawn those troops. Add to that the very real possibility of another ‘tet offensive’; something to push those with weakness in the knees into giving up.
The uncertainty is making me crazy, and in this instant I suddenly feel sympathy for the Germans in the early ’30’s when a charismatic politician was promising them a better future. That thought sends shivers down my back.
rockhauler on April 25, 2007 at 11:58 PM
I wouldn’t get too riled up about getting Reid to step down. Media’s got his back, Dems and my guess a good number of our people would back him. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are reports of our guys saying that Inhofe and supporters are going too far in their rhetoric.

Maybe it’s Fred Thompson… I don’t really care who, but if somebody doesn’t step up, we’re going to lose more ground in 2008. Republicans have a lot more seats at risk than the Dems, and it’s pretty hard to get excited about voting Republican at the moment. “We’re not as bad as the other party” isn’t going to get people to the polls.

I called Reid’s Las Vegas office today. The gal took my message, which I was polite, succinct, and VERY pointed. I told her his remarks were disgraceful and hurts this country and that he nees to put his efforts into getting a clean bill to the presidents desk. I lived in Las Vegas for 14 years and since I got there in 1990, Reid had slowly become more leftist as he became more senior in the dem leadership.
Reid gets elected in Nevada because of a few socially conservative stances, but mostly on one issue. “Yucca Mountain”. Nevadans are absolutely bonkers over it. They have the time too, because Las Vegas especially, is booming and if you aren’t making tons of cash, well, you are just plain lazy. So, the only thing left to worry about is the morning drive time and Yucca Mountain. The state has become very conservative over the years, electing 2 conservative govenors, 1 senator and 2 representitives. Shelly Berkley (D)(fitting name) well, there is only one thing you need to know about her. CAIR rates her 100% friendly.

Ah, but Laura, those chills going down my spine were not the good ones. Rather, it was the sudden realization of just how vulnerable we are to a charismatic politician who will promise us heaven on earth if we vote for him. It puts the current democrat party campaign in a different light.
It demonstrates the appeal the activist Imams have with the devout believer.
I’m getting sick and tired of the cat fight, and want these problems solved. So someone says, “start hanging the [insert ethnic group of you choice here] from the street lights, and all your problems will be solved”. I’ve even hinted at it myself.

No problem, I wasn’t really picking a fight with you, just venting something. I’m just annoyed with the fact that the media was able to create the idea that he said anything remotely offensive when he simply said (at Thurmond’s 100th birthday):
Thurmond being a segregationist at the time he ran has nothing to do with the comment. The comment was saying “hey old buddy, for what it’s worth I voted for you and wish you would have won because we’d be a better country for it”. He wasn’t saying “too bad you didn’t win feller, look what them coloreds have done!” The whole “controversy” was ridiculous - all the forced apologies, etc. I can’t believe what a pu**y he and the GOP at large were over that situation (among others).
RightWinged on April 26, 2007 at 1:51 AM
I’m with you. But cling to hope a little longer. Murtha’s ’slow bleed’ isn’t gonna work. If the dems fund the troops two months at a time, we can still win this fight. If the dems abondon the troops in the field, well, I’ll bring the rope. Do you think we need a parade permit?
rockhauler on April 26, 2007 at 1:56 AM
I wish I could be that optimistic, but as long as the Dems keep telling the enemy “just keep it up for 2 more months”, it’s going to be tough. What you said about clinging to hope a little longer is what the Dems have been doing since a few months in to the war and they step it up every time we’ve had victories (cleared certain cities, Iraqis had successful elections, etc.). When anything good happens, you know there are leakers prepared to produce bogus “scandals” to hurt the war effort and Dems to blow these situations out of proportion and politicize the war in general and promise victory to the enemy.
RightWinged on April 26, 2007 at 2:56 AM
I wish all the Dems would look at the notes from the Soldiers as Southern Dem did. The troops do care and they’re getting sick of being pawns in their political chase for the White House. Hubby is a resident of NV (it’s nice his ex-step-mother lets him use her address) and has been since he signed up almost 20 years ago. He knows a number of other military folks who are also residents too but like me, he wonders if their absentee ballots ever get counted, especiallly when they see they’re coming from combat zones. We all know Dems do everything they can to take away the right to vote from our troops in various ways (losing the ballots, sending them out so late that it’s difficult for the service member to get his/her ballot back on time, etc.). Hell, Reid isn’t inclined to believe anything out of General Petreaus’ mouth. Did anyone catch Petreas’ news conference after his meeting? A couple of snarky reporters kept trying to slip him up and more or less compared him to a puppet of the Prez. It was great to watch him answer that he worked for no political party, just the troops and their mission and then when this snarky girl tried to re-ask the question again, he completely blew her off. She was off to the side huffing and puffing.
Hubby called Reid’s office in DC and sent a snail mail (he said he doubts my email even got read) to his Senator telling him his feelings on the subject. Both his phone call and letter were polite but to the point. He doesn’t expect a response.

Just how many of us Oklahomans visit HotAir??
I say we take the place over, and make Michelle Malkin move to
realmiddle America.Btw, have any of the rest of you noticed the lurch to the left in the Oklahoman the past few years, since the daughter (?) took over?
For those who think it doesn’t affect the troops:
“The Moral is to the Physical as 3 to 1.” - Napoleon Bonaparte
Poorly equipped troops with high moral can do magnificent things, while the best equipped troops in the world are impotent with low (or no) morale.
