Video: Reid vows not to believe Petraeus if he reports progress in Iraq

posted at 1:01 pm on April 24, 2007 by Allahpundit

He’s willing to compromise. Unlike some Democrats, he’ll hear Petraeus out; he’ll just simply refuse to believe anything he says that doesn’t fit the left’s narrative. If that “reasoning” sounds familiar, that’s because it’s exactly what Eric Boehlert and various nutroots morons accused the right of doing during the Jamil Hussein episode. Allegedly we couldn’t accept that conditions in Iraq were dire so we concocted a sourcing scandal to explain away a dubious AP report about Shiites lighting Sunnis on fire, which, once discredited, would call into question the totality of reporting from the country. Sheer, unadulterated horseshinola, but that’s What Warbloggers Believe according to non-warbloggers Boehlert et al. Now here’s the Senate majority leader doing precisely the opposite, willfully turning a blind eye to any signs of progress, however “modest,” to protect his own quasi-religious conviction that nothing but nothing good has ever come from the war and nothing ever will. Wouldn’t be the first time the left has done that, either.

I included a bit at the beginning of the clip to show how absurd are the Clintonian semantics he’s resorted to in order to spin his recent declaration of defeat. Petraeus doesn’t believe, as Reid apparently does, that “the war is lost”; he believes that military force alone can’t win it at this point. Reid says he doesn’t grasp the distinction, but of course he does — he’s just worried about losing some of those extra Senate seats he expects to pick up from an American defeat. All other consequences be damned.

Next stop: veto of the new compromise bill that orders Bush to begin withdrawing by October 1. Please note that the clip has been edited slightly for brevity.

Update: Meanwhile, there are conflicting reports about swelling and disintegrating support for Maliki among Iraqis. Parliamentarians think he’s finished, having been unable to broker any compromises among Sunnis and Shiites, but his decision to cancel the wall in Adhamiya and the prospect of Sunni areas receiving oil revenues from the central government might be giving him a bit of new support among Sunni citizens.

how amazing it is that the left acts exactly how they claim the right does

Defector01 on April 24, 2007 at 1:07 PM

It’s pretty clear that either through incompetence, or sheer disdain for Bush, that Democrats simply do not want to succeed in Iraq at all.

Progress in Iraq? We’ll hear none of it.

Nate A. on April 24, 2007 at 1:10 PM

unhinged. it is so obvious that he is doing this just so the dems can pick up seats in the senate in 2008. to the dems, it’s “soliders be damned.” politics as usual. and they wonder why most americans have no respect for congress…

you are right. and why is that? so they can appease their nutroots and pick up more seats in congress. it’ll all about power – their power. they are NOT looking out for the average american. they just want to make damned sure that the average american is totally and completely dependent on them. sick. sick. sick. sick. sick.

pullingmyhairout on April 24, 2007 at 1:15 PM

You would think that we were still fighting Saddam’s Army, instead of removing his regime from power and installing a democratic government.

What they are doing is treason, sad fact is in the technology age in which we live. Making IED’s with cell phone triggers for simple purpose of daily Western Media headlines isn’t too tough to continue to pull off, to ultimately pull the strings of puppets like Harry Reid.

jp on April 24, 2007 at 1:16 PM

“Remembering the Dem ‘08 campaign that cost 3 million lives”

That is a conservative estimate. The real number will probably be closer to 10 – 11 million. There is some major payback due to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

LakeRuins on April 24, 2007 at 1:17 PM

You can tell he does not even believe himself. I got to give him credit, because it is amazing how he can even keep his nose from growing while his spews BS.

I used to try– try– to discount as mere rhetoric the claims that the Democrats didn’t want to win this war, and actually took sides with the terrorists against this country. Thanks to Harry Reid, I can’t do that any more.

That man is beyond reprehensible.

morganfrost on April 24, 2007 at 1:20 PM

Reid is dangerously dumb.

JammieWearingFool on April 24, 2007 at 1:21 PM

The reason they can be so boldfaced in their hypocrisy is because they have the media on their side.

Though those of us who follow these things closely see the hypocrisy, the American public never will. It will appear to them as if the Democrats really are doing it “for the children”.

Susan in a Car, mother of soldier in Iraq unloads on the Democrats and Reid

Tom Finneran (the host) is the former speaker of the MA House. WRKO is a 50,000 Watt talk radio station that reaches much of New England.

Susan in the car is the mother of a soldier in Iraq and she unloads on the Democrats over the Iraq war. A must hear, emotional call. Skip forward to around 15:00 (there is also a caller just before her who sets up the call that is also worth a listen.)

TheBigOldDog on April 24, 2007 at 1:27 PM

Reid is a pathetic idiot and a cowardly traitor. He’s simply pandering to the radlical leftists that keep him in office.

rplat on April 24, 2007 at 1:28 PM

This morning I watched him squirm from the “war is lost” to Bush in the “state of denial” to “I respect Petraeus” to Bush is not doing anything the ISG recommended, which was followed by Reid’s statement that he would not believe Petraeus if Petraeus said progress was being made.

Of course, Hairy did not note whether Bush was doing as Petraeus recommended.

How is it supporting someone if you don’t believe what they have to say?

drjohn on April 24, 2007 at 1:28 PM

…he’ll hear Petraeus out; he’ll just simply refuse to believe anything he says that doesn’t fit the left’s narrative.

Well, as long as you keep an open mind, Harry. //

BacaDog on April 24, 2007 at 1:36 PM

It’s quite simple really.
The Democrats cannot win unless we fail in Iraq. That’s why they want to lose so badly.

hairysurrenderried…who in Nevada could have voted for this moron…

It’s good to see that victory is once again being measured in body counts, just like Vietnam. I’d say that defeat was being measured, except that we all know for which side Senator Reid and the left are cheering.

rw on April 24, 2007 at 1:38 PM

Wow…. we’re the only country in the History of the World to loose a war, while winning every battle.

And Reid wants to make it TWICE!

Romeo13 on April 24, 2007 at 1:42 PM

Harry ‘the traitor’ Reid’s logic escapes me.

If we’ve “lost”, does that mean that the Saddamists (Saddamites?) are reclaiming Iraq? The majority Shiites are going back to being murdered and raped by the Sunni death squads? The statue is going back up?

No. The war is won. For the Reid/Murtha/Pelosi triumvirate of treason, this is their last gasp and they’re terrified of Petraeus saying so.

Now, it’s the stabilization and reconstruction costs we’re dealing, and I have an idea that when the other 40% of the surge troops begin cementing the gains that have been made, and the new government lets their troops a bit more off the leash, a lot of insurgents and their sympathizers will be sent to their deaths in short and final order.

In the meantime, to paraphrase a Trumanism… Go to Hell, Harry!

heldmyw on April 24, 2007 at 1:46 PM

…and there is no evil? This man is pure evil, his country and free people be damned, so long as it’s politically feasible. And no one stands up to him, until Fred! comes in. There are no men left in D.C.

Entelechy on April 24, 2007 at 1:47 PM

I wonder what would happen if everyone who wants Reid to resign just cancelled any plans to travel to Nevada – specifically Las Vegas. They elected this bastard – why not make THEM pay if they are going to send this traitor to Washington to blindside our troops and our commanders?

WHEN HARRY GOES BACK TO VEGAS, SO WILL I.

drunyan8315 on April 24, 2007 at 1:50 PM

As the parent of a soldier I only wish that reid had his children on the front line instead of profiteering in nevada the way they have. I say that a repremand is not only justified but required and if a member of the senate can be disbarred let the preceedings begin.

This man not only puts our military at risk but all of us.

robo on April 24, 2007 at 1:51 PM

Wow…. we’re the only country in the History of the World to loose a war, while winning every battle.

They sold us out in Veitnam and they’re about to do it again. If we allow these self serving dolts to again betray our soldiers and our friends, then we should never again send our youth to die for these sorry, disgusting politicos.

question: is our body politic to the point, because of the left/media that we can only pursue pacifist foreign policy. Wars are off the table in other words, simply because of our village idiots posture on the matter. If so, Osama was right and we do not have the will power to use the most powerful military force ever.

Reid is a hole. I hate to bring this up because the lefties get all reactionary, but… 9 of our guys were killed in one attack, the biggest lose of lives in more than a year, I can’t think of any repeat any war with casualty rates this low… and Reid is saying that this is proof we are losing?

The Dem are overplaying their hand and they know it but I think it’s too late for them to go back so they are going all in. We need to call them.

Gwillie on April 24, 2007 at 2:14 PM

I had to put a post up at The Sandbox on this topic. The intentional dishonesty in equating “this war is lost” with “it can’t be won militarily” is mind-boggling. Does he think the American people are that stupid?

In any complex endeavor, there are multiple parts. A professional athlete doesn’t get to the pinnacle of his sport by eating right. He practices, eats right, runs, lifts, trains, studies, takes lessons, etc. If I tell someone, “You won’t make it to the NBA by eating right,” that DOESN’T MEAN YOU EAT WHATEVER YOU WANT (or especially that you don’t eat at all). It’s obviously inferred that ONLY eating right won’t get you there.

Iraq is a multi-pronged approach, and security for Iraqi citizens so they can live less fearful and prosper in time is CERTAINLY one of the requirements. Mr. Reid should quit insulting the intelligence of every American he’s supposed to represent.

Unlike some Democrats, [Reid]’ll hear Petraeus out; he’ll just simply refuse to believe anything he says that doesn’t fit the left’s narrative.

how amazing it is that the left acts exactly how they claim the right does

Defector01 on April 24, 2007 at 1:07 PM

It’s called “projection,” and it’s right up there with “displacement” in the left’s toolbox of psychological avoidance mechanisms.

Of course “military force alone can’t win” in Iraq. If anyone thought that such a solution was possible to begin with, we wouldn’t have spent so much time helping them set up a constitutional government and hold multiple elections. To claim that somehow our Iraq policy to date has foresaken political solutions is just another pathologically dishonest canard that lefties parrot over and over again, hoping in Goebbels-like fashion to convert it into their “truth” by sheer repetition.

But one thing’s for sure, a purely “diplomatic” solution that foresakes military force is guaranteed to fail, especially when the enemy isn’t interested in reciprocating the gesture. But then again, failure is what the donks want most of all these days, with their “I-support-the-troops-but-not-their-mission” schtick.

Now can we question their patriotism?

Capitalist Infidel on April 24, 2007 at 2:04 PM

What is there to question, when to paraphrase a well-known aphorism, the donks have “opened their mouths and removed all doubt?”

Spurius Ligustinus on April 24, 2007 at 2:24 PM

Do our leaders get to harm the country at a time of war, with their “freedom of expression”?

And Allah makes the most important point here:

Petraeus doesn’t believe, as Reid apparently does, that “the war is lost”; he believes that military force alone can’t win it at this point. Reid says he doesn’t grasp the distinction, but of course he does — he’s just worried about losing some of those extra Senate seats he expects to pick up from an American defeat. RightWinged on April 24, 2007 at 3:31 PM

I hope we have just as many troops in Iraq on the day the new democrat president is sworn in as we do today.

Then when they are withdrawn and the country with upwards of 1/4 of the world’s oil reserves falls into the hands of militant islamic extremists the USA will know who to blame.

This is precisely why Hillary! says Bush should pull out now and “not leave this problem for the next President to deal with.”

doriangrey on April 24, 2007 at 4:32 PM

The Democrats overwhelming approved the appointment of General Petraeus. Ask him why he and his caucus voted for the General, a known expert on counterinsurgency, if they had so little confidence or were unwilling to give him a chance.

Anil Petra on April 24, 2007 at 4:40 PM

This POS reminds me of the Truthers:

Fire never caused a steel building to collapse until 911!

They don’t mention the horrific structural damage that large passenger planes flying at 400-500 mph caused to the WTC towers. No, it’s just the fire.
Reid tries to attribute our defeat to the General but won’t mention that military victory can’t be achieved without political will bolstering the efforts of our armed services. He imagines that we won’t notice his attempt to perform a partial-birth abortion of the political will of our country. Reid truly is a saboteur.

thegreatbeast on April 24, 2007 at 4:49 PM

This just in Harry Reid:

No war is won militarily. War is politics and the military is a tool used to impose a political end. Petraeus is an educated man (PhD from Princeton) and knows this. Reid is knowingly using this quote out of context.

Case in point: We kicked the crap out of the Vietnamese in the 1960s and lost.

You would think that some news people would pick up on this and make ol’ Harry eat his words.

After all, no US Senator has ever been successfully impeached.

But seriously, folks, if the Democrat party continues to follow the path it’s on, the blowback could knock them so far they’ll be trying to catch up with the Greens.

I’m convinced we need opposition parties in US politics. I’m not as convinced as I used to be that the Democrats have to be one of those parties. If they want to marginalize themselves out of existence, fine with me. I just hope someone less loony can take their place.

I just find it amusing that Reid quotes Petraeus (incorrectly, of course) to back up his claim that Iraq is a lost cause only to turn around and say that Petraeus doesn’t know what he’s talking about if he reports that progress has been made. That’s a flip-flop that would turn John Kerry’s stomach.

Which is it, “Senator?” Does General Petraeus have credibility or doesn’t he?
