Hot Air turns one

Happy Birthday to us! And thanks to all of you for making the first year of Hot Air a phenomenal success. Here’s the very first post that appeared on our blog–posted at 4:15am after bleary-eyed preparations and an intense team effort to launch the site. And here were my reflections on our six-month anniversary.

This is the very first business I’ve ever run. The experience has deepened my already abiding respect for entrepreneurs small and large. It ain’t easy. Not everyone has the intestinal fortitude to attempt to create something from nothing, if I may say so. It takes a great leap of faith–and I’m grateful to all the members of the Hot Air team who took that leap with me.

The risks are great, but the rewards can be, too. And not just financial rewards. Hot Air is not just a business. It’s a mission. I intentionally brought together an eclectic group of incredibly talented people to bring something new to the blogosphere. One of the things, I think, that makes this site compelling and interesting to read and watch every day is that we have diverse views and diverse personalities here. If you want standard GOP talking points, if you want uniformity of thought, if you want a comfy echo chamber, you know you are in the wrong place.

One of the primary goals in starting this site was to give you content and analysis you can’t get anywhere else on a daily basis–both on the blog and in our original video features. Another chief goal: having fun. The viewers’ choice for favorite Hot Air video, which we’ll feature in the Vent space today, captures that spirit. So do so many of the other irreverent shows and posts that grace this site.

Hot Air wouldn’t be what it is without the active community of commenters and viewers who come to the site throughout the day, every day. Once again, we are opening up comment registration today for a limited time to bring new folks into the fold.

We’d like to hear from you today about improvements you’d like to see, constructive feedback on the video offerings, etc. Love notes are always welcome.

We’ve brought you to Iraq and into my closet and who knows where else in the coming year. I know the rest of the team will join me in raising a virtual toast: Here’s to another year of Hot Air rising.

Update (BP): Comment registration is now closed. Thank you to everyone who registered, and we hope to see you around the Hot Air water cooler in year two!

Update (BP): A great birthday present from Sanctuary:

Congratulations! HotAir is the best website on all the Internets. It’s certainly my favorite.

Congratulations!

What a year it was.

Michelle –

Hot Air is a daily (often several-times-daily) read for me. Love everything about it. Thanks for a year of great stuff.

One request: More Mary Katharine!

Farmer_Joe on April 24, 2007 at 7:53 AM

Congratulations to the Hot Air team on your one-year anniversary. Michelle, Allapundit, Bryan, Ian, all the great guest bloggers like See-Dubya and those who present videos and keep us laughing.

Hot Air is a must read each (and watch) each and every day. Best of luck in the future.

Thanks for all the work y’all do!

Mr. Bingley on April 24, 2007 at 8:07 AM

Great job everyone and congratulations! It seems a lot longer than a year given the time spent surfing the posts.

The Muhammad cartoons was what first brought me to Michelle’s site and then Hot Air. True blue American guts is what I appreciate most about these sites.

Keep up the good fight and Godspeed.

Hot Air is the one-stop shop for me every day. Thanks to the team for the fantastic work you have done this past year. The best is yet to come.

Happy Birthday.

Thanks for all your hard work and dedication to this site. You run it very well. Your talent and creativity show everyday. You make this a fun, interesting place to read and be. Well done.

Congrats, guys! Here’s to another year! :)

ZK on April 24, 2007 at 8:33 AM

I’ve said this on other boards on Hot Air, but this is one of my favorite sites (news or otherwise) since I discovered it last September. Hot Air is enjoyable and informative. And as others have noted on other boards, I have definitely learned much from many of the people posting comments on Hot Air. I’m not sure my opinion has ever been changed, but it has helped me to better articulate why I believe what I believe.

Criticisms: Not very many. I’d love to have the posts numbered, as that makes it easier to check back on newer posts. Since many of us have asked for this, I’m guessing it must not be a simple fix with the software you’re using. Similarly, if there was a way to re-edit our own posts (imdb has something like that) after we’ve seen that we’ve made some typos would be great as well. Wish MM would post more Vents, as this seems to have diminished in the last month or so. That being said, I understand there ARE limits to her time and creativity, especially since I’m sure MM’s rising success starts taking up more and more of your time.

And are we EVER going to see a picture of AP?!?!?!?!?

Congratulations on your first year anniversary! You’re all great!

asc85 on April 24, 2007 at 8:35 AM

HotAir has made me more excited than Al Gore’s obsession with drowning polar bears!

I’m a long-time subscriber and a first time commenter who starts and ends his day with this site. You’ve done one hell of a job and I look forward to the inherent success in the future. “4 More Years!”

MM makes me think.
AllahP makes me cringe sometimes and rage at others
Bryan makes me read long, rational, thoughtful insights.
Ian makes me laugh.
Stak and Spencer make me angry and sometimes very afraid but informed whether I want to be or not.
Overall, the gamut is run here at HotAir. Information, entertainment and real insights from a spectrum of minds.
Perfect!
Thanks for ALL of it!

Happy Birthday HOT AIR

This is my very favorite blog site. I check it at least a dozen times a day and still can’t get enough. Thank God I’m retired.

Thanks to all of you for giving me the opportunity to express my thoughts about all that is going on in this country. If I didn’t have this forum to vent my frustrations I think my head would explode. I also think that Mrs. OBX Pete is sick of listening to me bitch.

OBX Pete on April 24, 2007 at 9:42 AM

Happy Birthday Hot Air!!

What started out as an idea has really grown!! Michelle, Brian et al, a great job that everybody’s done.

It’s realy amazing to see how far you’ve come in just a single year!!!

How about some of those rare out-takes once in a while as well, they were rather amusing at the end.

Congratulations!

Yay! I’m finally a member.

Congratulations Michelle, Bryan, Allapundit and Ian on a whole year of Hot Air!

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on April 24, 2007 at 9:45 AM

Actually, for Allahpundit’s safety, I don’t want to see him, hear his voice, or anything else that could give him away. He surely would be a much easier target for the “Behead those who insult Islam” crowd if even only we could identify him… and a beheaded Allahpundit doeesn’t do us, the rest of the HotAir staff, and especially himself any good. I’m sure he’s as attached to his own head as I am to mine. I wouldn’t sleep as well at night if I knew that Allah’s outing led to his demise… and we have to assume that some nutjobs salivate at that very thought.

It might be fun for him to do a Vent or other show sometime behind a screen and in a garbled voice, though. Make it a big, booming voice suitable for a deity coming from behind a screen of partly cloudy skies, and call it “A Fatwa From Allah.”

Congrats Michelle et al on the first year of great work, and here’s to many more. Perhaps eventually the site could be modified to allow for multiple video programs on the same day (and, on that day or until the next day’s first posting, be able to see all of them without a trip to the vault)? If Michelle has time (and I for one certainly understand if you don’t, Michelle), doing so would allow for a Vent and a Jihad Watch on the same day, for instance. I know I’ll view whatever you post whenever you post it.

Hot Air has replaced Drudge as my goto wegsite for breaking news.

Have you considered a “Ding” alert (ala Southwest) for hot information?

I think the two major reasons for your success; a rational conservative perpective without being obtuse or doctrine motivated, and the effective use of humor, weilded like a slilletto rather than a club.

If for no other reason (and there are plenty more), it would be sufficient cause to praise your efforts in that you’ve gotten Allah to blog again on a daily basis. His old blog was a daily “must read”, and his retirement a cause for dismay. Bringing him back from the dead, so to speak, was a huge add to the larger “conservative” blog space. His is a unique voice, adding a much needed, and difficult to pigeonhole, perspective that I’m very pleased to read several times a day.

And no, I am not related to him nor is he paying me to say this.

Fred on April 24, 2007 at 10:38 AM

Congratulations on turning one, guys.

A preview button would be very nice, as would a comment-editing function. The closest I’ve been able to get to either back at No Runny Eggs is Comment Live Preview by Iacovos Constantinou. I can’t figure out how to allow users to edit their own comments, however; it seems that ability is tied to post/page writing.

Happy Paper Anniversary to my favorite “non-paper” news source. Hot Air has become my first and, on some days only, stop in the blogsphere. You have a great team here with different personalities and outlooks on events, so the blog doesn’t get stagnant or repetative. Plus a healthy dose of humor thrown in to keep it entertaining. I wouldn’t mind more stories out of the sports world.

Here’s to the next year of interesting posts and fun times for all………

Mallard T. Drake on April 24, 2007 at 10:50 AM

Oh, I forgot. As a suggestion for how to improve your site:

A PREVIEW FEATURE BEFORE POSTING COMMENTS!

thanks.

Mallard T. Drake on April 24, 2007 at 10:51 AM

I come here everyday. It is stop number 2, right after realClearPolitics. Michelle’s website is 3. And that’s how I get my news each day. Time permitting I will hit a couple more places (Always AC on Friday mornings) – but RCP,HA, and MM do the trick.

I gave up on the MSM right about the time this site came along – and I don’t miss it one bit.

Still, despite what Michelle said, I do consider HA something of an echo chamber. I don’t like reading opinions I disagree with, and I don’t get many here.

Happy Birthday guys and gals.
You’ve done and amazing thing with this site in such little time.

Hotair is one of the first sites I fire up in the morning. In fact, I think I visit your site more than the blogfathers site now. :O

Kai on April 24, 2007 at 11:13 AM

Congratulations, Hot Air crew! This is a site I check out every day, several times a day. I used to run a forum and know how hard it is to keep the comments to the high road. With this site, I rarely see the flaming that I encountered regularly with my own forums. You are to be commended for not only the content, but the style and the flavor of your convictions.

Thank you for opening up registration.

Hats off to you!

Tennman on April 24, 2007 at 11:13 AM

I am thinking the constant request for preview is to be destined as a running joke here. It has been suggested countless times; but, I simply do not recall any official word about it.

Michelle,

Re: Improvements

Sometime links are to NY Times, LA Times and other sites that want to track people and force them to sign up before they can even read an article. Same thing with some videos. An alternate site would be nice, but not if it slows down the excellent job you are doing now.

Truthful news in a timely fashion is an improvement!!!

tommuck on April 24, 2007 at 11:23 AM

I have to thank you guys for ruining all my days. Since you opened, I find that I have to check your site at least twice a day, which means reading the posts you put up. When am I supposed to work…have you thought of that???

I seriousness, I love the site. I registered the first day and have been able to make a few comments from time to time..something I had never done a lot of.

One thing that you could do to help fossils such as myself would be to have a way to retrieve articles that have scrolled down and off the page. From time to time I have wanted to re-read an entry only to find that it has gone (I accept that perhaps there is a way to do this that I just don’t know).

Congratulationsm feliz cumpleaños, and keep on keeping on.

Blaise on April 24, 2007 at 11:26 AM

Michelle, Allah, Bryan, See-dub and all the rest,

Congrats (and thanks) on a year’s worth of excellence (in blogging, maybe a new EIB?). Hot Air has become my 1st place to look when I am hunting for information.

Thanks also for opening up the comments! I’ve been wishing to get in here for a while now.

Many years to come.

TheSev on April 24, 2007 at 11:48 AM

My only suggestion – and it’s more of a request – I’d like to see AP do a vent.

looking4statesmen on April 24, 2007 at 11:53 AM

Been reading you guys for the whole time.

You have a good balance.
Allahpundit is to the left of me, but when he’s not being antagonistic, his posts are great. Those one-line descriptions crack me up, and when he gets serious, the story selection and analysis are also great.

Bryan’s posts remind me why JunkyardBlog was must-read during Katrina (and in general).
Speaking of Junkyardblog, See-Dubya is no slouch either.
Ian, must be a silent partner or something.

Anyway, thanks for the great work team.
There is NO WAY I would be this informed without blogs, and Hotair is a big part of that.

If I had any criticism, it would be that you seem awfully close to the traditional media’s analysis on some issues, e.g. on Muqtada Al-Sadr being an America’s natural enemy. I’ve long hoped to point you in the direction of Engram’s Back Talk for statistics and analysis galore.
I hope someone at least gives it a glance.

Happy Birthday!!
I have been reading for a while, and waiting to be able to register to add my 2 cents now and then.
