Seems times may have changed. He may not be taking things too seriously for the reason that, if memory serves, at no point did any of the captives violate their Rules of Engagement or the specifics of their training. Even Blair said that the safe return of the hostages (although I don’t think he even used that word) was his main concern. Dr. Phil for PM!

No worries, Freelancer. Just explaining why I could see how somebody could crack when they’ve been dumped into a situation like that without the confidence of their home country backing them. However, the second it was announced they were going home, a little humility is in order. There were far better examples of how to behave yourself sitting right next to him the whole time.

And parading around now making light of the whole thing is terribly irresponsible of HIM (if I didn’t make that clear before).

Why on earth do you suppose they let this little pansy play sailor? He is an embarrassing doofus.

When one is held by an enemy state, one must put faith that their life is in the hands of geopolitical powers well out of their control, where crying in the arms of ones captors or spitting in their face makes no difference, one must place their dignity foremost.

That said, a couple years ago, an American in the captivity of a nation such as Iran could believe that their homeland would be their protectorate. Nowadays, I’m not sure that a British seaman could feel that confidence. Even such an indescretion such as the taking of an Ipod or minor ridicule could carry significant intensity to break ones will absent the rock of a steadfast nation.

Be careful how much blame you put on the man when the nation isn’t up to the standard. When diplomacy means approaching the table with a bag full of carrots and a Dr. Spock book, a gun to the head makes all the difference.

One more “that said,” making this much light of the event, with our press, this soon… little bit tough to justify.

Although, as my friend reminds me, they didn’t have their IPods stolen like Mr. Bean did.
