Politico columnist scolds Silky Pony for invoking Christ in VTech prayer

They must be paying Roger Simon by the word because he could have said this in three paragraphs, max. He’s not quite angry — that would be “insensitive” — but he’s clearly miffed at the thoughtlessness of a Christian reciting a Christian prayer for the victims when Cho himself was so much more inclusive in who he targeted.

There’s some hand-wringing over gun control in there, too, and a big milquetoast finale re: Silky paying for haircuts out of campaign funds in case you care.

Do yourself a favor and skip it and read this instead. Exit question: In which of the two Americas do offshore, tax-sheltered, $30 billion hedge funds operate? (Exit answer: The same one in which class warriors live in 28,000-square-foot mansions.)

Yeah, and the same one in which class warriors get two $400 hair cuts within a month while Joe SixPack can get two hair cuts for $20 at Bubba’s BarberShop.

From Simon’s article:

In his story, [Politico's Mike] Allen tells how Edwards only decided to do a prayer at all after talking with a political consultant. (I guess Edwards didn’t have time to take a poll.) This consultant is a “strategist for reconnecting with the long-lost Reagan Democrats.”

Typical John Edwards. Using the immediate aftermath of a tragedy or tragic news in order to attempt to score a few political points.

An oilier snake oil salesman I haven’t met.

SisterToldjah on April 23, 2007 at 8:21 PM

Edwards is a Soros stooge and operative that needs to be fully exposed to the electorate before it’s too late. The insidious nature of the left makes it imperative that they be constantly monitored, challenged and exposed lest they begin to rot the very foundations of the Republic.

Lord, please give us wisdom in ‘08. In Jesus name, amen.

Mojave Mark on April 23, 2007 at 8:28 PM

This is shamefully ridiculous. AP, you should know better, especially after bothering to read Politico’s post.

Edwards is a fraud, we can agree on that at the outset. If he has a religion, and if that religion is Christianity, then that is the ONLY religion he needs include in ANY prayer, public or private.

When I pray for the peace and comfort of the surviving souls of this massacre, you can be certain I pray in Jesus’ name, because I believe He is the one true God. Why on earth would I pray to, for, or in behalf of something I don’t accept, that I don’t believe has real spiritual power to affect change?

Real hypocrisy is asking someone to pray in the name of something or someone they don’t believe in as a spiritual source. You of all people should know that. Requiring someone to demean their own faith by demanding such inclusiveness is immoral.

Regardless of the fact that it was Edwards, this stuff has got to stop. If someone prays from the heart in whatever real religion( I will just leave it at that) they follow, I am fine with that, it rings true to me that they feel compassion and a desire for peace. Complaining that he did not include the Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Wiccans, Taoists, etc, is just plain insane and ridiculous.
Now, like I said, this was Edwards, so truth, compassion and heart are excluded from anything that comes out of his mouth. Go after that , Hat Boy, not the easy PC religious BS.

And if prayers are supposed to comfort, I wonder how comforted the loved ones of Liviu Librescu felt.

I would imagine his loved ones are already aware this country was founded on Judeo-Christian beliefs. Somehow, I doubt John’s “prayer” was a surprise unless it was in that it might reveal the man possibly has a soul.

Edwards may be the most transparently bad politician on the national stage today. It’s hard to fathom how this guy was ever a Veep nominee.

good quote-pull, thedecider.

Are prayers supposed to comfort? I thought they were to implore the God/Deity to whom one is praying to bestow comfort upon the grieving.
If someone is praying for me, I would hope he is sincere enough to pray to the God he believes in, in the manner he believes is correct.
An insincere prayer is surely not going to provide anything.

Apparently Simon has no problem with the Imam who prayed only to Allah at the VT convocation service.

Mr. Simon, you calling Edwards a hypocrite is the epitome of the pot calling the kettle black.

infidel4life on April 23, 2007 at 11:09 PM

freelancer,

Requiring someone to demean their own faith by demanding such inclusiveness is immoral.

It seems that your ire ought to be directed at Mr. Simon, who actually made the point you’re taking issue with.

This Roger Simon, not Roger L. Simon.

Come on, people!

All the religions on earth are mutually exclusive. If you believe one you specifically don’t believe the others. This is basic thought 101.

I’m a Christian and I know every other religion is wrong.
So and so is Muslim and he knows that every other religion is wrong.
Somebody else is Jewish and he knows that every other religion is wrong.
…and so on and so forth.

The point of modern civilization is to discuss religious issues without degenerating into violence. This is possible with all religions with the exception of Islam. I’ve even had civil religious debate with a Satanist I used to work with.

Mojave Mark on April 24, 2007 at 12:37 AM

So, as a political calculation, this was not much of a political calculation.

The very fact that political calculations are/s.b. considered when praying for these victims, in any form, is disgusting in and by itself.

To the exit question can be added the dangerous Soros and the Kennedy clan who off-shored their important trust funds. Taxes are for the other America, the one they claim to ’support’, ‘feel for’ and ‘lead’, when in fact they exploit it and live off of like leeches.

Pablo,

It was, primarily, but with a side order for AP in giving it voice here without ridiculing it as well. That leaves the presumption that he at minimum condones, if not shares, the position. A presumption augmented by his penchant for attempting to tweak believers.
