However, the things belong to the almost useless class of “assault pistols” which, while having the unweildy size and weight of a submachine gun, are semi-automatic and designed to shoot the same caliber bullets as standard semi-automatic handguns. “Hollywood” looks that would appeal to the juvenile mindset (no matter their physical age) the things are larger than a pistol like the Glock, therefore harder to conceal and in reality have no real firepower advantage.

A disadvantag of these things might be pointed out here: Since they do indeed look exactly like their fully automatic submachinegun counterparts, an idiot with one out on the street at night should expect an officer or armed citizen to retaliate as if it was one.
Not that it matters, the whole thing is just as stupid and shows about as much knowledge of firearms as this hollering fool did.

From the text of the 94 legislation:

(b) DEFINITION OF SEMIAUTOMATIC ASSAULT WEAPON- Section 921(a) of title 18, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the following new paragraph:

`(30) The term `semiautomatic assault weapon’ means–

`(C) a semiautomatic pistol that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least 2 of–

`(i) an ammunition magazine that attaches to the pistol outside of the pistol grip;

`(ii) a threaded barrel capable of accepting a barrel extender, flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer;

`(iii) a shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel and that permits the shooter to hold the firearm with the nontrigger hand without being burned;

`(iv) a manufactured weight of 50 ounces or more when the pistol is unloaded; and

`(v) a semiautomatic version of an automatic firearm; and

Maybe I am confused, not a big gun person. Is a “semi auto handgun” different from a “semiautomatic pistol”?

Maybe so, but the fact is that the guns used by Cho (a Glock-19 and a Walther P-22) have never been considered “assault weapons” and have never been banned by the AWB. The only handguns banned by the AWB are the Calico M-110, MAC-10, MAC-11, MPA-3, Olympic Arms OA, TEC-9, TEC-DC9, TEC-22, Scorpion AB10, and the Uzi.

I don’t read it that way. The letter urges the reauthorization of the AWB, which includes semi-automatic handguns. I took this paragraph to highlight the difference between hunting rifles and rapid fire weapons, be they handguns or rifles. I could be wrong, but the point remains that the police chiefs support the AWB.

While most rifles are designed to be fired from the shoulder and depend upon the accuracy of a precisely aimed projectile, semi-automatic assault weapons are designed to maximize lethal effects through a rapid rate of fire.
