Strikes on Osama inside Pakistan are off limits, says Mush

Dawn says no matter how good our intel,Centcom’s hands are tied:
Congressman Gene Taylor, a Democratic member of the committee, however, insisted to know what the Centcom would do “if Osama … was identified to be in a specific building, on a specific street, on a specific village in Waziristan.”
“I do not have permission to go across that border on my own, and to conduct activities within that country, without some arrangement or agreement with the government of Pakistan,” he said.
You can bet the farm that such an arrangement or agreement would come down in plenty of time to take our shot, and no little birdies in the ISI would tell Osama to fly the coop before we did.
I understand Musharraf wanting to uphold the territorial integrity of his country. At the same time I can’t imagine him actually insisting on these guidelines. If we miss a shot at Osama because of his intransigence I think things would go badly for him. It already looks bad, since one of Mush’s major only allies in Waziristan just admitted he’d shelter Osama if Osama asked him to, and fight the “infidels” if they come a-knockin’.
Nobody asked me, but I say we if we get good info, we take the shot and then call up Musharraf: “We had an agreement, right? Right?

Musharaf does know that if he actually protected OBL from us, that he’d cease to have a navy or an airforce in 24 hrs and the Indians would LOOOVE that
Defector01 on April 21, 2007 at 7:37 PM
Maybe after 9/11…but honestly, I don’t think the US is in a position to rattle any more sabers these days. You can thank the democratic party for that. Don’t you just love how their patriotic support has strengthened our position in the
war on terror?thelinyguy on April 21, 2007 at 7:48 PM
He is trying to draw him out guys…this is why he is making these deals…atleast that is my intel.
tomas on April 21, 2007 at 7:54 PM
Well does anyone expect that a military guy is going to say , in a Congress hearing noless, that we’re going to disregard the border and attack inside Pakistan with impunity?
I doubt that even if we would do that that we would admit it.
VinceP1974 on April 21, 2007 at 8:02 PM
Take the shot. Far better to ask forgiveness than permission. I’m so sick of hearing about the “international community” that I could puke.

See-dubya, what territorial integrity? Signing over control to tribal authorities through treaties is ceeding territorial integrity. If the Paki govt. doesn’t rule there, how can our actions be constrained by the Paki govt.? Unless we simply allow them the rhetorical ground that this is “Pakistani territory” even though the govt. can’t go there. Mush is signing deals with the locals to “give them control”, control they already possess, in exchange for “help against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda” that they don’t give. It’s kabuki theater.
I understand why it’s happening. I understand the pressure Mush is under and the terrible strategic situation we face there. But let’s not pretend that Waziristan is part of Pakistan in the same sense that Texas is part of America. It isn’t. Just because the Paki govt. claims that land doesn’t mean they own it, especially if they can’t govern it. We’re allowing AQ and Taliban to have control there for now because we’re busy on other fronts, not out of deferrence to Paki soveriegnity.

Kick Ass and take names. Ask questions later.

CW,
Its always been my persuasion that binLaden bought his protection through Musharraf. There is no way the guy could be living as long as he has (if in fact he is still alive) with all the competition going on amongst all the various tribes, they all could use the extra $25Mil and I’ll bet if the info was really good the U.S. may even give a bonus.

I think it’s high time India did something about Pakistan. They could argue that Mushy’s instability is a serious threat to them. And it is.

Even a democrat, unless its like Kucinich, would have to respond if it was leaked that Musharaf and his inner circle shielded OBL from us. That’s if the Dems wanted to stay in office and even the non nutroot members of that party would be up in arms to teach Musharaf a lesson.
Defector01 on April 21, 2007 at 9:22 PM
It’s possible I’m being far too pessimistic, but that’s not how I read the current political climate of the US. I think a lot of Americans would be perfectly happy to sweep this whole OBL mess under the rug and rid their hands of it for the next 5-10 years. If the democrats had complete political control, they would do so little to confront islamic fascism, and make so many concessions, that they would be able to maintain the status quo long enough to let a segment of society forget all about 9/11. The American people (in aggregate) are not going to allow another war in the next decade, even if its over OBL, even if it’s utterly sensible.
What would actually happen is the democrats would force the administration to have ongoing talks with Musharaf that would drag on for months and accomplish nothing, giving them plenty of time to score political points when it didn’t work. And if the administration went in hard, they would attack it for trying to start another war and completely steal whatever thunder we brought to bare. Basically, everything the US does is wrong if a republican is the one in charge.

ummm… you do all realize that Pak is a NUCLEAR STATE?
Can they directly hit America? no…
Can they give nukes to those who will smugle them into striking distance? YES!
Mushy is a figure head with no power and the sooner we realize this, and take…. precautions… the better.

Isn’t it OK?
Didn’t Harry Reid say we Lost and It’s OK?
That means that the “Bad Guys” won’t come after us anymore, because we just “gave up” right?
Wait, don’t the spoils go to the victors?
That means if Harry Reid said we “Lost” the “Global War on Terror”, then the Terrorists can do what ever they want with the American People right?
Who will protect us, Harry Reid? No…… Nancy Pelosi, she met with the enemy…… Dick Durbin, he called our troops Nazi’s, Ted Kennedy, he called President G.W. Bush a liar when the President never lied, and all the time, our Main Stream Media, protected under the Constitution, mislead us, just to elect Democrats………..
When they come to cut your children’s throats, who will you blame, since they took the truth and your ability to protect yourself away………?

Borrowing from the SF Chronicle thread – could apply here, if the agents acted first:
Yes, there would be:
- all freedom-loving people
- women
- children
- progress
- life
- conservatives, liberals and independents
- the 21st century
- the world
…but there’s no need to worry much about Osama’s whereabouts.

I think if we had an address for UBL in Moscow or Peking, we’d whack him… no doubt.

If we knew OBL was in a specific building at a specific time in Pakistan… one word
M.O.A.B.
Ooh, gee, Pakistan has a nuke. The U.S. has over 10,000, that doesn’t seem to prevent people from trying to tick us off.

Osmam is a coward hiding like a little girl who had her pigtail pulled.
(Assuming he hasn’t been taking a dirty nap for a few years.)
If he is still kill-able, he’ll get a Hellfire surprise one of these days.
Musharref may “protest”, but knows which side of History he needs to be on. (His Islamist brothers would have his head on a pike if they could.)
profitsbeard on April 22, 2007 at 2:01 PM
You mean the Democratic party that has had control for not quite 4 months in the Congress? I get your point, things were going so swimmingly up til then.
honora on April 23, 2007 at 9:31 AM
If the American rulers are such pvssies as to obey Musharraf in this, then the Americans are on their own and will either fend for themselves or not.
Kralizec on April 23, 2007 at 1:21 PM
Much can happen in just 4 months.
