I’m not much of a country music fan, but Jeff Foxworthy makes the case that I ought to be one. Click to head over to the CMT page, scroll down to video #11. It’s one of those must sees, especially a minute or two in.

Update: CMT’s video player isn’t working for a lot of you (maybe they ought to hire us for consulting). I captured Foxworthy’s speech and will have it up here. Stand by.

Update: Here’s the video. Enjoy!

There are very few liberals in country music. And the country music that I hear on the radio is very pro-American.

I think that’s why I’m more drawn to it now than I have been in past years. Or it’s the fact that today’s pop music SUCKS.

The video won’t play for me for some reason, but I can agree with the sentiments.

ScoopPC11 on April 21, 2007 at 10:05 PM

That was remarkable. No cutaways to the Dixie Chicks, though…

That was great. Thanks for sharing that one Bryan. I didn’t like country music growing up, but it’s grown on me in recent years for exactly the reasons Foxworthy stated.

Unfortunately, Microsoft’s Windows Media Player Plug-in for Macintosh does not support Windows DRM. If DRM support becomes available for Macintosh, CMT will develop a version of CMT Loaded that works on a Mac.

Hey Bryan if you dont like country then check out video #7, Bon Jovi’s performance, they are perfect as always.

and this is the first time I’ve heard Foxworthy get in any way political and that was a damn good speech

Defector01 on April 21, 2007 at 11:25 PM

I can’t stand country music, but I like country music artists, and “rednecks” in general. Rather than “rednecks” I prefer the label “real people.”

And I hate Bon Jovi and their nancy-boy wussie music. :)

If you want some patriots that play music with a bit of testosterone in it, try Iced Earth.

I mean Stevie Ray Vaughan is dead, and we can’t get Jon Bon Jovi in a helicopter. Come on, folks. “Get on that helicopter John. Shut up and get on that helicopter! There’s a hair dresser in there. Yeah, go ahead in there, yeah yeah.”

Country music? Ack! The hackneyed song structure and chord progressions; flavorless fiddles and the tiresome timbre of the Hawaiian guitar; the ponderous half-talented male vocals… I’m pro America, but a can of lentils has more “wow” factor in it than country music.

Benaiah on April 22, 2007 at 12:42 AM

I am more a prog rock kind of guy, but I enjoy Johnny Cash and Alan Jackson’s “Precious Memories.” Jeff Foxworthy’s speech was a breath of fresh air from the “entertainment industry.” If I live in the Pacific NW can I still be a redneck?

For any Yes fans out there, Jon Anderson is supposed to be a guest of Michael Smerconish in MSNBC on Monday. Smerconish is the replacement for Imus’ show.

sonnyspats1 on April 22, 2007 at 1:46 AM

He may not of been talking about the Dixie Chicks..but when he said that part about the awards being chosen by the people and not the insiders he could have easily of been talking about the Chicks Grammy awards which everyone knows was only given to them to award their Bush bashing and nothing else.

mlong on April 22, 2007 at 1:51 AM

Can’t take modern pop country music.

Patsy Cline, The Man In Black, Gene Autry’s blues beginnings, The Kings of Western Swing, Bill Allen’s psycho-billy, Woody Guthrie, , Hank Williams, even early Dylan, yes, but I still like Foxworthy’s and Country’s spirit.

They just need to get back to the rawer Appalachian roots and strip away the timid, predictable schmaltz.

Jeff Foxworthy has grown on me over the years, and this speech had “perfect pitch”. Well done, redneck.

Martina McBride’s music has such a strong positive message of life and faith. The Dixie Snerts shouldn’t be allowed on the same stage.

Freelancer on April 22, 2007 at 6:20 AM

Foxworthy on the dixie chicks:

…and I understand that all the songs on that album are great, but I listen to country radio, so I haven’t heard any of ‘em yet. Their big song was called ‘Not Ready to Make Nice’, which is perfect, because we’re not ready to care.

::smack::

Freelancer on April 22, 2007 at 6:36 AM

I’ve gotten more into country music because of it sounding more like pop, but I’ll sit there and listen to the older stuff as long as it doesn’t get too twangy.

And now that I’ve seen the video, it is pitch perfect, and lists all the reasons why I do love listening to country.

ScoopPC11 on April 22, 2007 at 6:52 AM

This is probably the greatest speech I’ve ever heard about country music. I never liked country music until I got older. Here in Chicago, US99 is run by leftists, who attend Cindy Sheehan events and protest the war.

I have respect for Foxworthy doing that, and I’m glad the people running the event didn’t keep him from saying it, as he feared. McBride’s song “Anyway” at the end was very uplifting. The lyrics alone are inspiring.

Thanks for the post, Bryan, particularly the video!

Hey you forgot to mention that Jeff’s from GA. I like country music and wound up listneing to almost exclusively through the 90’s because the other stuff was junk.
Well that and because country music had Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, George Strait, Alabama, Randy Travis, …..
Well Toby Keith, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton
Okay I ain’ a big fan but I do listen.

I’ve listened to Country music for over 30 years now. There is nothing in the human condition which cannot be explained in a country song. From loving your children (hundreds of songs fm Martina McBride, Trace Adkins, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams JR, Darrel Worley, etc…) to fighting for your country (Toby Keith American Soldier, Trace Adkins Arlington, Fighting Words) to how we feel about homicide bombers and their nasty, ugly ilk (Trace Adkins Welcome to Hell), country can cover any story with music.

And I listen to them all.

There is one thing country does much better than any other genre does, though.

While not a big country music fan, there a number of songs I really like, including David Alan Coe’s “You Never Even Called Me By My Name” written by Steve Goodman.

He added a verse to complete it and make it the perfect country song…

Well, I was drunk the day my Mom got out of prison,
And I went to pick her up in the rain,
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck,
She got runned over by a damned old train.

I will add that Jimmy Buffet, from these here parts originally, is perhaps my favorite music artist…

Very nice speech. Doesn’t make up for making ethnic bigotry acceptable, but it might help repair the damage he’s done.

(redneck jokes = okay, “nappy-headed ho’s” not okay.)

I live in the heart of country music, it sometimes seems. I go out to the suburb, there’s Garth Brooks avenue. I head down to a movie in Bricktown, there’s Toby Keith’s “I Love This Bar”. I think that gal who won the American Idol contest was from Muskogee… yup, just checked. Ugh. She’s a Tulsa chick (Tulsa == liberal Oklahoma). Then of course there’s Reba Macintyre, and on and on. Can’t go through a day without hearing something to do with C&W. And I’m not much of a C&W fan. But I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

Compare and contrast: the story behind “Whiskey for my Men (and Beer for my Horses”) with “Gangsta Paradise”. After 9/11 we had songs coming out from Country and Western performers like “God Bless the USA”… where’s the hiphop, rock, or other genre’s equivalent?
The most terrifying truth to liberals: rednecks are the REAL Americans.

Time off in hell for this speech, Foxworthy. But you still have a lot to be forgiven for.

Wait… what? Foxworthy’s a bigot? Example please.

As for “Whiskey for my Men (and Beer for my Horses”), that’s not the greatest example. Toby Keith can be decent, but that song wore out it’s welcome quick. And it didn’t help that he teamed up with Willy Nelson… The same Willy Nelson who supports the looniest of the left in this country. The same Willy Nelson who came up here to VT to support (during the election) the (self proclaimed) socialist that represents us, when we moved him from the U.S. House to the Senate.

I’m lost. Are you talking about his “You might be a redneck” schtick? Jeez. I thought it was still OK to do that. In my mind, it’s the equivalent of the inner-city “Yo mama’s so…” jokes.

And, crr6, the fact that you would confuse love for the USA with a partisan political philosophy says more about our times than I care to address.

Trace Adkins
Lyrics for Song: Songs About Me
Album: Songs About Me

I met a guy on the red eye
He spotted my guitar
and said what do you do?
I said, I sing for a living,
Country music mixed with
a little rock and a little blues
He said I’m sorry
but I’ve never been crazy
’bout that twang and trains and hillbilly thing
What ever made you want to sing stuff like that?
I just looked at him and laughed and said

cause it’s songs about me
and who I am
songs about loving and living
and good hearted women and family and God
yeah they’re all just
songs about me
songs about me

So I offered him tickets
I said you’ll see what I mean
if you show up tonight
he said I doubt you’ll change my opinion
I’ll be kind of busy, but hey man, I’ll try

Then later on when we finished our songs
about scars and cars and broken hearts
I saw him, he was standing there
right next to the stage
and he shouted
man you were right
it was like you sang those

songs about me
and who I am
songs about loving and living
and good hearted women and family and God
yeah they’re all just
songs about me
songs about me

So I’ll just keep on singing
’til I hear the whole world singing those

songs about me
and who I am
songs about loving and living
and good hearted women and family and God
yeah they’re all just
songs about me
songs about me

I would imagine Foxworthy made that speech because he, like so many of us, has been sickened by these “artist award” shows lately where the awards are given not for talent, but for political conformity.
