Audio: Alec Baldwin gently chides young daughter for forgetfulness

A father’s hand must be tender yet firm when correcting children. Or, as I like to call them, “rude, thoughtless little pigs.”
One thing I can’t figure out: How on earth would TMZ have gotten hold of Baldwin’s daughter’s cel phone? Who could have provided them with that disquieting voicemail message?
I guess we’ll just have to wonder.

Update: Actually, is it really that bad until the very end? The “pig” thing is over the line but otherwise he just sounds an angry dad worried about his daughter. Free Alec!
Update: On the other hand, isn’t this almost as bad as gunning down a bunch of innocent college students?

Not sure what the laws are there, but at least in Ohio that’s considered assault. You can have people jailed for cussing you out. Now add to the fact that she’s a minor.

Dear Alec,
Just FYI, I’m sure I’m not the only parent that makes their pre-teen kids turn off the cell phone by 10:00 at night.
On another note, she’s not the one making you look like an a…
At least your going to let her know how you really feel when you next see her. I’m sure she couldn’t tell by the message.

Poor kid. It sucks when your parents don’t act like grownups.
Bad Penny on April 19, 2007 at 8:08 PM
I’m outrageously outraged! This plot to smear Alec Baldwin is soooooooo transparent… Ask yourself: Do Haliburton and Dick Cheney own controlling interest in Verizon?
Google it!
ScottMcC on April 19, 2007 at 8:08 PM
Wow, I can’t imagine why an 11-year-old girl might be reluctant to take a phone call from someone who berates and threatens her. Somehow I doubt that was the first time, either. I already knew that Baldwin was a pompous POS, but now we can add being an abusive parent to his personal Wall of Shame.
And remember, liberals like Baldwin always tell us that everything’s “for the children.” Just not his own, apparently.
ReubenJCogburn on April 19, 2007 at 8:10 PM
I don’t know. The words he used were completely inappropriate for the ears of an 11-year-old. But other than that, if Alec won’t stand up and be her father, who will?
I bet if you asked a little girl whose father doesn’t care enough to chew her out on a voicemail if she wished she had a Dad who did, she’d say yes. But Alec has had a troubled life and he and Kim split, so any deviant behavior exhibited by his daughter is to be expected.
Call me crazy, but it gives me hope to see a man NOT disappear from the lives of his children, even if he does have a foul mouth and an ACLU card.
unamused on April 19, 2007 at 8:16 PM
What an ass he is. More do as I say, not as I do from the dims right, Southern Dim?
Catie96706 on April 19, 2007 at 8:16 PM
By the way, you can all take your feet off of Alec’s neck.
You are all starting to sound like the witch-burners at dailyKos…
If this story were about Fred!, you’d be singing a different tune (as would I, naturally).
unamused on April 19, 2007 at 8:17 PM
hollywood “parenting”.
jummy on April 19, 2007 at 8:19 PM
Are you completely INSANE! Okay, I’ll call you crazy. I cannot think of an 11-year old girl who would want to be called a pig by her father, not once but twice. He needs to disappear far far away from his daughter and if I was his ex-wife, I would see that it would happen and I would use this phone call as my ammunition. No one deserves to be talked to like this, least of all a child by her father. After reading your post again, i really hope you are kidding.
Glynn on April 19, 2007 at 8:19 PM
Alec has continued to give many of us reasons to keep our knee on his neck. Ever since he called for the stoning of Henry Hyde and his family, then the abuse of his wife, threatening to leave the country, his diatribes against Bush, etc., etc., etc., he has stayed in our consciousness like a malignant bloated horror.
Glynn on April 19, 2007 at 8:22 PM
I was suprised at this girl’s cell phone service. That’s one hell of a long time slot to leave a message. On mine and on others, it cuts you off just after a few seconds.
Chris L. on April 19, 2007 at 8:22 PM
Is it really that difficult to get to a phone in NYC?
kahall on April 19, 2007 at 8:24 PM
Sounds like the poor guy is at the end of his rope. I’m going to out on a limb and suggest this was brought on more by Bassinger not making the kids available and/or not impressing on them the importance of having a relationship with their father. The things he said may have been inappropriate, but I can see circumstances in which they would be completely understandable. He said early on something about his daughter doing this all the time, so he’s probably just sick of the disrespect and is lashing out.
Though I have to say, Alec, if you and your liberal friends hadn’t had their way all these years, fathers wouldn’t be automatically assumed to be the bad guys and you might have more of a relationship with your kids.
corbettw on April 19, 2007 at 8:25 PM
Wait until she grows up and he threatens to stone her.
JammieWearingFool on April 19, 2007 at 8:25 PM
This was in the article that went with the audio.
Glynn on April 19, 2007 at 8:27 PM
Your right if my siblings talked to my nieces/nephews in that manner I would try to be understanding as to the stress that my brothers family/sisters family were going thru.
F15Mech on April 19, 2007 at 8:27 PM
That was totally uncalled for. He should lose his visitation rights over that one. This is a child he was saying these words to – and not just any child, his child! I understand that 11 year old girls can be difficult, to say the least, and anyone who says that raising girls is easy, obviously doesn’t have one. but to say this to your own child is not just “over the line” but criminal. Those words really will scar her for life.
pullingmyhairout on April 19, 2007 at 8:27 PM
Really? I can’t see how it is understandable in any way under any circumstance.
Glynn on April 19, 2007 at 8:28 PM
Well, I always remind myself of these things when I feel the urge to go off on my kids: “I am the adult. They are the children. I know better, they don’t. Act like the adult that I am and not the child I could be. I teach them by my actions and my words.”
Alec needs some serious parenting skills.
pullingmyhairout on April 19, 2007 at 8:30 PM
I’m heartbroken over your meanie person words. Very witty.
Do I know you? Or do you think AP can’t take a joke?
SouthernDem on April 19, 2007 at 8:30 PM
I agree and I am surprised at those on here who don’t seem to think it was that important. Having raised two girls of my own, and having gone through my own stress with them, still, these are not just words, but tools of abuse. Kim says he physically abused her. It appears he is pretty good with verbal abuse, as well, and not just with grownups. Shameful.
Glynn on April 19, 2007 at 8:32 PM
pullingmyhairout on April 19, 2007 at 8:32 PM
i think he sould at least lose custody. does anyone doubt that a man who can reach a state of mind in which he screeches like that at his daughter, saying those sorts of things, keeps his hands to himself? and i’m not just talking about bloodying her nose now and then, which no doubt happens.
jummy on April 19, 2007 at 8:33 PM
Baldwin’s rope is shorter than his happy little man … He is in a volcanic rage all of the time.
laelaps on April 19, 2007 at 8:34 PM
A couple of things on this:
(a) Obviously, it was released by the side trying to get an advantage and to smear him.
(b) If anyone has done any family law, this sounds like a guy who is completely at his wits end about the game-playing that goes on in divorce cases, particularly when the lawyers are no-holds-barred celebrity types
(c) that said, he absolutely has an anger control issue, because it is absolutely inappropriate to be taking his anger at his ex-wife, or the process, out on the child. Further, it sounds as though he has some control issues and he is frustrated at being out of control…again, the issue is not with the child. He can correct her, but in a positive way, and have his lawyer use that to have the custodial parent explain why she didn’t have the child available for the phone access. It would have completely changed the tone of the legal proceeding.
There is, I admit, a bit of schadenfroid (sp?) here because, of course, Baldwin is a leftie nutbar. He is sanctimonious and is typical in that he is continuously telling us all how to act. Now, he’s “outed”.
But, there is still a child involved, who is caught in the middle. It is completely inappropriate that whoever leaked this put this child’s situation in the public arena.
Blaise on April 19, 2007 at 8:34 PM
thanks for agreeing. there is never any excuse. parents who verbally abuse their kids are going to raise verbally abusive kids. He reaped what he sowed.
Now, off to read to, snuggle with and hug my kiddos. It’s bedtime around here.

NEMETI IN SYRACUSE on April 19, 2007 at 8:36 PM
According to the article with the audio, he has only visitation rights, but those have been suspended after a judge heard the tape. He is a tragedy in the making, waiting to happen.
Glynn on April 19, 2007 at 8:36 PM
Just to clarify…I did not put a /sarcasm tag at the end of my post. I agree with you completely.
F15Mech on April 19, 2007 at 8:37 PM
I really think you’re stretching here. Yes, that’s not the way you should talk to your children, but this is not proof of someone beating their child.
SouthernDem on April 19, 2007 at 8:39 PM
I agree to a point. I consider this child abuse. Mental/verbal abuse is every bit as damaging as physical abuse. If a medical professional heard this, they would be obligated to report it. But I do agree that it is sad it was made this public.
Glynn on April 19, 2007 at 8:39 PM
I’ve met Alec and spent some time with him. This is no surprise. He’s simply…how shall I put this…an asshole.
Pablo on April 19, 2007 at 8:39 PM
Kim Bassinger said he abused her physically. From this verbal rage, how do can you be so sure it would be a stretch for him to turn be physical with this daughter?
Glynn on April 19, 2007 at 8:41 PM
don’t ruin my fun. i was dared to drag this down to dkos level and by gosh, i almost got it down there.
jummy on April 19, 2007 at 8:42 PM
Actually, is it really that bad until the very end?
What????? She’s 11!! He says g*ddam twice to her and tells her she doesn’t have a brain and then says he’s gonna fly out to see her to be “straightening your ass out.” And calls her Mom a pain in the a**.
So yeah. It is really THAT bad.
Good grief.
Rightwingsparkle on April 19, 2007 at 8:58 PM
Or were you being sarcastic?
Rightwingsparkle on April 19, 2007 at 8:58 PM
The difference here is that conservatives ripped Newt a new one for faxing his cancer-stricken wife her divorce papers, but dKos will make excuses for poor Alec because his wife is crazy and his stupid brother supports the BushHitlerOilFacistChimpNaziHaliburton administration’s war on reproductive rights!!1!!
If this story had Fred! in it, the story would be about how Fred! told Alec that he needed a MySpace page.
“A MySpace page?” Alec asks.
“Son,” Fred! calmly explains in a folksy manner “the average 11 year-old doesn’t take a dump without a MySpace page. So where’s your MySpace page?”

AB is just a vile person. I remember when he visited the WNY area during the last senate election to stump for “Hillary!”. Nothing but invective and bile pouring out of him the entire time. I feel sorry for anyone related to him.
If my brother spewed hate the way AB does I’d probably kill him just to save my family the embarrassment. (Thank goodness my bro is a dyed-in-the-wool conservative. Good genes. What can I say?)
As an OT side note, can we PLEASE get a “Preview” function for posts here at Hot Air?

Upon further reflection, I now realize that Alec Baldwin was merely following liberal doctrine, by giving his daughter a pretty vicious rant and an important action alert.
ReubenJCogburn on April 19, 2007 at 9:37 PM
SPOILER! It would have been better to start listening to his rant without knowing the target, slowly realizing it’s his own preteen daughter.
Jim Treacher on April 19, 2007 at 9:40 PM
Glad to know he was thoughtful enough to pull himself away from his latest PuffingTons Blog entry to call his daughter and tell her how he felt.
Maybe she doesn’t answer the phone because you’re an abusive jerk, Alec.

You stupid goat humper, someone needs to straighten you out! Now, are you happy I’m in your life?? (before I get a flag on flaming, I’m simply examplifying a point here) This is like saying that you’re happy to see an abusive husband stay with his wife rather than abandoning her. I mean come on. “He beats me because he cares. If he didn’t care about me I wouldn’t get in trouble.”

to really complete the dkossification, we’d have to reduce alec bawldwin’s entire identity down to a wince-inducing malediction, like “alec rapes and beats his daughter bawldwin”.
this would come of course after we speculate that he also rapes his daugter. that would be established with a post which would go something like, “one thing i can’t help but notioce is that this doesn’t sound like a father scolding his daughter at all. it sounds more like an angry ex-boyfriend…”
yadda yadda, a couple of amens and all that’s left is to make bawldwin emblematic of his entire political class. this is accomplished by exporting the meme to every other forum imaginable. you could go to, for instance, a hiliary08 video on youtube and leave a comment something roughly like, “i can’t believe you’re supporting a candidate of the party of alec rapes and beats his daughter bawldwin.”
this being a paralel fantacy world where the right posesses the left’s energy to repeat the meme a trillion million times from every livejournal page and college mailserve, the effect is quite defeating, because the first forty hits for a google search of “alec bawldwin” would already return pages mentioning primarily the incident with the daughter.
but all of this would require the sort of monomaniacal, focussed permanent rage against anything which diverges from one’s point of view which the left possesses and we, i’m thankful to say, do not. i mean, this thread is dead already. the comparable kos thread would be at 600 comments by now.
jummy on April 19, 2007 at 11:51 PM
Alec Baldwin verbally abuses his daughter…um..ok. This is the same guy that beat the sh*t out of Kim Basinger that led to the famous photos? And we’re surprised by this why? What’s the next story? Bears still using the woods as a toilet?
Alec needs a crash course in why it’s not nice to beat your wife and kids. Maybe Adam Baldwin could take him aside and give him a loving, brotherly punch to the face until Alec realizes why hitting loved ones isn’t done.

Seems to me that Alec “Schwetty Balls” Baldwin is doing a great job of alienating his daughter all by himself. Why is he playing the blame game? Typical liberal, it’s always someone elses fault. Perhaps this wouldn’t have happened if he’d just been a man, instead of a little boy, and moved out of the country like he threatened to do if Bush were to be reelected in 2004.
What an a$$hole of a father to say anything like that to his little girl.
SilverStar830 on April 20, 2007 at 1:28 AM
Pablo, you’re so polite – it pained you to name him what he is. Tells much about you and about him.
While what he did is despicable, the mother and her lawyer leaked this sealed material in violation of a court order.
Entelechy on April 20, 2007 at 1:42 AM
Keep in mind, she wasn’t the only one to have access to this.
As to the court order, why should it be kept private? When someone calls you and leaves you a message, they have no right to privacy. And who’s to say that it wasn’t made public before it was given to the judge? I’m certainly not going to go by what Alec’s spokesman says.

I’m usually pretty luke-warm about Sean Hannity’s radio show, but I utterly tremble in anticipation of his weighing in on this one…
Blacklake on April 20, 2007 at 11:47 AM
Wow, who knew there were so many holy parents on here. Maybe the majority of you never cuss, but goddamn is not that bad. Really.
And all of you parents have NEVER said anything over the line, really? Maybe you don’t recall because it was not taped and aired to the public.
Despite AB’s behavior, it is KB who is out of line. She clearly released the voicemail to get back at AB. SHE doesn’t care about the child. Now everyone knows how her dad went off on her. Even if it wasn’t out of control, would any preteen want to be chastised in front of her peers let alone the whole country?!
I also think it wasn’t so horrendous. The pig part was too much. Maybe you all will say I had an abusive mother, but this sounded like a pretty normal scolding when I had tweaked my parent, on purpose, one too many times.
By the way, I did not see anyone post that he had apologized. Whether becuase it got leaked or not, he did apologize. Now we have to see if KB will do the same for leaking the voicemail.
PS I think the daughter is in California so it would have been 7pm her time.
HH on April 20, 2007 at 1:14 PM
I don’t usually listen to Hannity, but I was running errands during lunch hour and heard him:
He started off saying that he interpreted Baldwin’s message as a threat of physical violence, then talked about how everyone missed all the obvious signs that the Virginia Tech shooter had serious issues, and circled back saying something to the effect that something has to be done – this time we have clear evidence that he is unbalanced, and something has to be done.
The prognosis for his head-ectomy is not good. I believe it may be too firmly lodged. What a tool.
