In his talking points memo last night, Bill O’Reilly wondered why the anti-gun left, which is in full froth right now, didn’t say anything about the thugs who terrorized citizens in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Does anyone have any numbers that reflect how many people protected themselves, lawfully, in the past year or more?

The precise problem is that the numbers are trumpted over and over again, only to be ignored by political and media figures who have an agenda.

Does the name John Lott ring a bell? I’ll give you a clue: As far as I know, he’s no relation to Trent.

It’s just like global warming. Anyone who disagrees with the dogma is automatically an idiot, or worse.

O’Reilly’s entire TP Memo was great last night (you should post the whole thing)… But he lost it when immediately following it, he went to Geraldo Rivera in the field. By the way, I wrote a lengthy email to Fox asking them to pull the disgraceful Shep and Geraldo off this story.

RightWinged on April 18, 2007 at 5:15 PM

Hi Ian –
I think Bill also mentioned that all guns need to be registered with law enforcement agencies too. If this happens, when the government decides they no longer want to abide by the 2nd amendment, they have names and addresses of where to head first for gun confiscation.

wytammic on April 18, 2007 at 5:16 PM

Rosie’s bodyguard comes to mind.

Tony737 on April 18, 2007 at 5:18 PM

The figure is 0.5 mil to 2.0 mil. This according to Kleck. I think he is a former member of Amnesty International.

Good for you. “Shemp” and Geraldo are disgraceful. Remember their performance during Katrina? The hysterics the two indulged in made me throw up in my mouth. Later on we learned most of what they reported was total crud.

jaleach on April 18, 2007 at 5:19 PM

And then there was this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-taU9d26wT4. This month’s NRA Magazine addresses what happened to legal gun owners during Katrina. There is more than one hypocrisy in all of this.

Ok, so, thinking logically:

Had these people not had a gun, what would have happened?
Are we prepared for what will happen when we don’t have guns and criminals still do?

unamused on April 18, 2007 at 5:22 PM

I’ll try the link again, the other one isn’t working.

More of us should have done that. Those two are the worst reporters asking the stupidest questions imaginable. Then again, most of them ask stupid questions. Oh, then you mix that with a lack of sleep — disaster.

Texas:

State Requirements
Rifles and Shotguns
Permit to purchase rifles and shotguns? No.

Registration of rifles and shotguns? No.

Licensing of owners of rifles and shotguns? No.

Permit to carry rifles and shotguns? No.

Handguns

Permit to purchase handgun? No.

Registration of handguns? No.

Licensing of owners of handguns? No.

Permit to carry handguns? Yes.

Other Requirements

Is there a State waiting period? No.

Is there a FBI *NICS check for firearm transactions? Yes.

Permit to carry a concealed weapon required? Yes.

Record of sale: No.
*NICS – National Instant Check System

The new Texas gun law removes the requirement for a citizen to first ‘retreat’ before resorting to deadly force in self defense, including home, office and car.

Come on down. Lots of room.

Bill’s not what I’d call a huge 2nd Amendment guy, but at least he’s been reasonable thus far.

Bad Candy on April 18, 2007 at 5:31 PM

Don’t mess with Texas! They’re all over it :)

wytammic on April 18, 2007 at 5:47 PM

Not trying to say ‘hey Texas is best’….but I know a lot of carriers. People with permits. No, not the fellas down at the VFW and ‘Lets-go-shoot-something-club’….secretaries, salesmen, clerks, housewives……and somehow, don’t ask me how, our papers aren’t full of stories of POd people playing high noon in the street. Sure the big cities (Houston, Dallas) have their gun crime but it is the same kind in every city….illegal guns in criminal hands.

Most of the stories of gangs terrorizing citizens with guns have been debunked, as were the stories of homicides and rapes in the Dome. Looting was the major problem.

For anyone interested…
Article on Gary Kleck and defensive use of firearm, most of which go unreported because the mere possession of a firearm by a potential victim is enough to cause the criminal to break off the encounter.

Does anyone know the best home security strategy? A dog. Intruders are repelled by the barking and go on to the next house. One of many reasons dogs are way better than cats.

Life is funny, isn’t it.

Bell Helicopter, TI, you name it…..San Antonio has lots and lots of spots. Houston has NASA. We make H-bombs around here someplace too.

The NRA may have a number for you. One of their magazines, American Rifleman, usually has a page of excerpts from local newspapers of people defending themselves…

Zorro on April 18, 2007 at 6:57 PM

unamused on April 18, 2007 at 5:05 PM

The page in “American Rifleman” is called “the Armed Citizen” and at the bottom of the page is a statement…

“Studies indicate that firearms are used over 2 million times a year for personal protection, and the presence of a firearm, without a shot being fired, prevents crime in many instances. Shooting usually can be justified only where crime constitutes an immediate, imminent threat to life, limb, or in some cases, property….”

Proud to live in Indiana where the lifetime CC permit was made available last year.

OH Please!…where I come from, they just poison the dogs and hit the house a couple of days later. As for the cat comment….phhhhtt!

The best thing is to have stuff in your window that says, ‘Nothing in this house is worth your life’, ‘gun control means using two hands’, and stuff like that.

How about this tidbit: States like Maryland have high ownership of attack dogs like pit bulls, rotweilers and so forth, because law-abiding people can’t get guns to protect their homes. Guns left on the table at home don’t push through the front screen door and terrorize the neighborhood.
For evey action, there are consequences. Our neighbor has a full gunrack and little bitty wussy dogs that come by and visit our kids. We feel very comfortable and relaxed, much happier than at our old place, where the neighbors had pit bulls – several neighbors – on both sides, which got out from time to time – the last one trapped some neighbors in their car. The sheriff had to corner the snarling animal in our yard. We had to keep the kids in for over two hours and every day were on the lookout in case the animal to the south of us got out – he’d froth and snarl at the second story window every single time we went to our car in our driveway. The installer’s son at another house opened the bathroom door, but the owner had forgotten to mention that he’d locked the pit bull inside. The father threw himself between the lunging dog and his son and received three severe bites that required treatment. I’ve been in lots of houses that had guns, and not a one ever leaped out of a dark room or drawer or closet to get us, but I’ve had some near things with home protection dogs, including ostensibly nice dogs like white labs, while being a guest in other people’s homes. I hate it when they wander by and say, “Gee, he’s not like that with us.” Uh huh.

It’s not by accident that the Left wants people defenseless…

The best sign to see in a Texas business? 49%!
I’d like to invite anyone who is against the ownership of personal firearms, wants to make a difference, and feels it’s the right thing to do for humanity, to start at my house.
Really.
Come get em.

Or try……..

Kentucky has much the same feeling as Texas…I guess that is because it was Kentuckians and Tennesseans who settled Texas(poke poke). I have a quote in my email sig that touches on this:

“It is the tradition that a Kentuckian never runs. He does not have to…he is not obligated to retreat, nor to consider whether he can safely retreat, but is entitled to stand his ground, and meet any (life-threatening) attack made upon him with a deadly weapon….” Gibson v. Commonwealth, 34 SW 936 (Ky. 1931).

Don’t forget the NOPD and the troops who confiscated guns from law abiding citizens, permitting them to be terrorized by the thugs.

I consider O’Reilly to be an a—hole, but he is right on that. I was in New Orleans when that storm hit, and I’m still here. I kept my guns, and any scum bag that tried to take from me met a hail of bullets!

off topic – Confederate, you aren’t with the guys who do the battle reenactment out in Chalmette, are you?

Guns were taken though, even by force from little old ladies. See link I posted above. Shameful.
