What cannot be done is to sit back and let exploratory drillers shoulder the financial burden by themselves. Instead, issue revenue bonds and pay them to drill on every square inch of land both on shore and offshore. You are acturarily certain to find enough oil and other exploitable minerals to make those bonds a profitable investment.

Oh, and one other thing. When an oil company pays a royalty to an American citizen, the payment is a business expense. But when the payment goes to a foreign government, it is a tax credit. Is anybody here interested in correcting this?

Argh … what did you guys do to your font colors and styles? Many of your links are showing up as white on a white background, and in a different style than before. Please go back to the old way, it was much better.

It is important for our President and his staff to make it clear to all people that The United States can no more give a country democracy than we could give them everlasting life. We can set the stage, remove barriers, but that society must stand up and decide they want a democracy.

I believe that setting the stage and removing barriers is what President Bush is talking about when he says “it’s hard work”. His conviction and resolution may be so strong that he doesn’t see a need to explain beyond “I know it’s tough”. I wish he would do a better job of explaining it to us, but I admire how steadfast and consistent he is anyway.
