He expects anyone to trust them to bear the weight of the free world?

Reality is what it is: with the “surge” only partly in place, it’s already having multiple, visible, desirable effects: sectarian killings are down significantly; Al Sadr is in hiding, his “Mahdi army” is fractured and in disarray; Iranian infiltrators are being rounded up; whole neighborhoods in Baghdad are being cleared and held; the Iraqi military is performiing better and better, and the Sunni tribes in al Anbar are turning against al Qaeda.

And John-Boy can’t stand any of it, because if the surge is working, that’d mean George Bush just may be right about something, after all. This is impossible in the mental universe where Edwards lives. But rather than question his fantasy world’s central pillar, instead he just retreats into denial, denial, denial.

Note the flip side of the denial coin, “Wishing makes it so.” John-Boy so desperately wants us to fail in Iraq that not only can he willfully ignore signs of success while moving the goalposts around to focus on isolated exceptions, he also thinks that if he just keeps clicking his heels together and chanting, “We’re beaten, we’re beaten, we’re beaten!” then somehow, magically that outcome will come about.

Edwards belongs in an asylum. He doesn’t need power, he needs help:

- This is a man who runs away from a debate hosted by a news channel that he’s afraid of.

- This is a man who so pickled in his own denial, so intellectually dishonest with himself and the rest of the world, that he can stare nascent victory in the face, call it defeat and look for ways to bring it about.

- This is a man whose egomania, greed and lust for power have so consumed him that he longs to see his own country beaten and humiliated in a war simply because he sees it as expedient toward satisfying his own selfish desires.

- This is a man who believes that all of the above are signs of moral and intellectual superiority, and therefore his sense of noblesse oblige entitles him to tell the rest of us how to live our lives.

This is a man who expects to be your president.

The most frightening thing about Edwards is that he’s already received a stiff dose of reality in 2004, and it had no effect.

Perhaps another dosage might snap him out of his fantasy-world of denial, so he can begin the process of recovery?

Nah.

Stryker Battalion restores market security

BAQUBAH — Coalition forces launched an operation April 2 to clear and secure the market area in Baqubah, Iraq, in order to reestablish the city’s economic center.

Soldiers of 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, from Fort Lewis, Wash., maintained a continuous 24-hour presence in the area, called Old Baqubah, during the first four days of the operation while they searched for terrorists and weapon caches.

They plan to remain in the neighborhood to assist Iraqi security forces as they establish and man permanent checkpoints to provide security for vendors and shoppers at the marketplace.

“It is important we open up the market place because in order to win the fight against insurgents, we have to establish a good economy,” said 1st Lt. Thomas Gaines, 1st Platoon leader, Company A, 5-20th Inf. Regt.

Iraqi police and Iraqi army soldiers plan on controlling the checkpoints and searching vehicles coming in and out of the neighborhood, while the Stryker Soldiers continue to operate in the area.

“We are flooding the area with a presence and making it permanent,” Gaines said. “That permanent presence should break up or at least disrupt (insurgent) operations.”

The Stryker battalion reported that the operation to secure the market was launched on the advice of the Baqubah city council, which considered it an important step in the progression of the city. Coalition forces hope that more vendors will eventually open their shops in the marketplace and that more civilians will feel safe shopping at the market.

“The market place that we are working out of is one of the main commerce points of the city of Baqubah,” said Staff Sgt. Jay M. Thompson, a squad leader with 1st Platoon, Co. A.

Thompson believes that disrupting insurgent operations in Old Baqubah will have an economic influence on the entire city and give hope to all the people who visit the market.

In other words, what provisions are there to replace elected officials who vacate their posts?
