Video: Bill Maher rips Media Matters

posted at 7:50 pm on April 15, 2007 by Ian

Bill Maher to the Soros-backed Media Matters: “You’re a bunch of sissies.” Hm. They might try to get him fired over such a grave insult.

Maher also condemned them for “going after everybody who’s ever said anything” and continuing the “gotcha culture.” Let’s see how the liberal blogs react to this one.

I would think liberal and conservatives who are employed in public communications would ban together and put a stop to this silliness. Let the free market reign.

Maher is right, the are cowards.

Wade on April 15, 2007 at 7:56 PM

A little touchy there, eh little man?

I cannot stand this man. Even if he is right.

Can’t wait for your new movie on “religion” Bill. Let’s hear your great and glorious wisdom and “humor” on that topic. Rather I think I can wait to hear your anti-Christian screeching and wailing.

CrimsonFisted on April 15, 2007 at 8:00 PM

would maher have said the same thing if a conservative got fired?

lorien1973 on April 15, 2007 at 8:01 PM

Bill has nothing to fear from Media Matters so long as he does not attack Hillary. Imus was being watched by them simply because he was critical of Hillary. Otherwise, they only monitor conservatives.

TheBigOldDog on April 15, 2007 at 8:03 PM

I just love the liberal indignation now that one of their own has been strung up by the angry mob of race hucksters led by folks like Sharpton and Jackson.

BacaDog on April 15, 2007 at 8:05 PM

That’s interesting. Soros-funded Media Matters crowed that they were the ones who pulled Imus down. Guys in the “Liberal Know” like Maher are very aware of who Media Matters likes and who it don’t like, so he’s worried.

naliaka on April 15, 2007 at 8:14 PM

Red on red is always fun. Doesn’t Bill kiss Rev. Al’s ass on a regular basis?

Stormy70 on April 15, 2007 at 8:39 PM

I just threw up in my mouth a little. Bill Maher is right. Blech…

HerrMorgenholz on April 15, 2007 at 8:39 PM

I don’t care when this cartoon faced jerk-off appears, if it is in the bank, whole foods, of just on the street, whenever he appears I’m taking a shot at him!

NEMETI IN SYRACUSE on April 15, 2007 at 9:06 PM

This ought to be interesting. 10 days later, HBO cans Maher saying “enough is enough”

Rick on April 15, 2007 at 9:13 PM

You know what is heartening? The Mahers and Moores of the world are so delusional that they think they are right. Every middle of the road liberal-not the leadership, but the led-who is dismayed at seeing their party taken over by the rad leftists have no use for Bill Maher or Mike Moore.
Maher and Moore consider their opinions to be facts. Guess again, boys! They are your OPINIONS. And they are false. And you don’t get better by becoming more delusional, so your best, sanest days are behind you. But you each have many more years to live. Good luck with that.

Doug on April 15, 2007 at 9:23 PM

What’s that saying ‘There is no honor amoung thieves’? I think that applies to the liberal leftists quite well, don’t you?

docdave on April 15, 2007 at 9:35 PM

Guys in the “Liberal Know” like Maher are very aware of who Media Matters likes and who it don’t like, so he’s worried.

Yes he does, so that was pretty cute trying to pretend he didn’t know if Media Matters was a leftist or right outfit. Uh huh.

Instapundit links to an interesting and related piece

When Rush Limbaugh has more listeners than NPR, or Tom Clancy sells more books than Noam Chomsky, or Motor Trend gets more subscribers than Mother Jones, liberals want to convince us (or themselves, perhaps) that it’s all because of some catastrophic market failure or a grand corporate conspiracy to dumb down the masses. In reality, it’s just the result of consumer choice. All the opinions that the Left’s media critics favor are now readily available to us via multiple platforms. But that’s not good enough, it seems: they won’t rest until all of us are watching, reading, and listening to the content that they prefer.

Topsecretk9 on April 15, 2007 at 9:41 PM

Take solice in the fact that while he might be right he’s surely right for the wrong reasons.

Never would I have thought that 3 little words, stupidly spewed by the host of low rated shock jock show could so soon show such promise of fracturing the far left socialists control over the Democratic party.

Buzzy on April 15, 2007 at 9:43 PM

I am not a fan of Maher, for sure, but in this video clip he makes sense. At this point the Left’s values of multiculturalism and not offending anyone has reached a level that is oppressive.

I am very glad to see people push back at the Left’s politically correct notions of non-offense to anyone, even the Islamofacist. If Maher pushes back good for him.

omegaram on April 15, 2007 at 9:47 PM

Every now and then he stumbles on a good point heh. Hell yeah they’re sissies, the modern hard left is full of whiners and complainers and completely devoid of any constructive input.

Dash on April 15, 2007 at 10:04 PM

This is interesting…this is a pretty progressive site who has to the bloggers credit a very coherent defense of the fellow that Maher is referring to in the “sissify” comment AND good rant on Media Matters —

I think the Clinton left would rather take down guys like Imus or Smerconish than a nutjob like Michael Savage, and that’s because moderates and independents are a bigger threat. The far right is easily stereotyped, and in the long run, they can actually be seen as helping (not hurting) Hillary Clinton. If the goal is to get her elected, silencing the moderates (and, of course, libertarians like Neal Boortz) is a vital first step. If I were working for the Hillary campaign, I’d advise precisely such a campaign. Little wonder that another primary target of the Media Matters campaign is Democrat Chris Matthews. Like Imus, he’s a Democrat against Hillary. They hate Matthews so much it reminds me of the attacks on Lieberman. Seriously; if you check out the links, you begin to see a pattern. While its stated goal might be to go after the right wing, Media Matters is very much in the business of enforcing Democratic political conformity.

and rightly notes:

Outfits like Media Matters should remember that they are no more immune from criticism than the targets of their campaigns.

MORE: It’s probably worth pointing out that Media Matters is a charity (contributions to which are “fully tax deductible”):

Media Matters for America is a Web-based, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media. Conservative misinformation is defined as news or commentary presented in the media that is not accurate, reliable, or credible and that forwards the conservative agenda.
I can remember a time when charities were supposed to be non-partisan.
Media Matters lists fifty six staff employees, and they’re hiring more!

(It has the smell of lots of money….)

Isn’t time the IRS took a look at Media Matter’s book?

Anyways – cheers to the progressive blogger – their are sane leftists who can see the forest for the trees and deserve a shout out.

Topsecretk9 on April 15, 2007 at 10:20 PM

ACK — “book’s” and THERE are sane lefitist….

Topsecretk9 on April 15, 2007 at 10:21 PM

Nevermind…not a “progressive site” – I did a visual and thought it I was on “My left wing” — SORRY – I kinda thought it was too good to be true. Still a good post though.

Topsecretk9 on April 15, 2007 at 10:24 PM

I used to visit there to get all the best things that conservatives said. Whenever I needed a good laugh it was off to Media Matters.

- The Cat

P.S. It was kinda like watching people punk themselves. “Just look at what this guy said about me!” hehe

MirCat on April 15, 2007 at 10:51 PM

I loathe Bill Maher too, but if he’s willing to go after the thought police at Media Matters, I’m not going to stop him :)

Here is Discover the Networks link to Media Matters.

What this group is trying to do, as ridiculous as their complaints against people like Rush sound (oh no! He used the acronym NAGS!), is scary, and I take them very seriously.

Buy Danish on April 15, 2007 at 11:54 PM

Maher tracking right? The whole Imus thing must have got to him. Rosie now this. Even Pelositics seems to be leaning right these days.

Theworldisnotenough on April 16, 2007 at 12:02 AM

Kudos to Bill Maher!

Soros is one of the most dangerous men to this country, as we know it. And one of its biggest hypocrits and ingrates.

Entelechy on April 16, 2007 at 12:16 AM

bill maher bullox.

“now this “media matters’… i don’t know if they’re coming from the left or the right…”

what horses**t.

jummy on April 16, 2007 at 12:29 AM

jummy beat me to it.

Jim Treacher on April 16, 2007 at 2:01 AM

P.S. There’s nothing intrinsically “right” or “left” about being disgusted by these thug tactics.

Even a stopped clock is right a couple of times a day.

Me thinks he protests too much……. Bill Maher would suck the dick of an Islamofacist if it would give him political points aganist President Bush, he is a coward, he has an agenda, and if he were a “man”, he would have a veteran of the war that does not like him on his show, do that Bill, look someone in the eyes that has seen battle, you are a COWWARD……… pathetic, stain on my toliet…….

PinkyBigglesworth on April 16, 2007 at 3:12 AM

The above is why you should never type in your sleep, drunk or both.

Stormy70…….Nope, that be ‘red’ on ‘black’.

DoctorDentons on April 16, 2007 at 6:17 AM

Bull. Maher and the other public facing Leftists only give a damn because one of their own got busted. The fact is if Clarence Thomas or Condi Rice had been the subject of Imus’ “nappy headed hos” comment he would King Of The Parade for the Left and they would be celebrating the Right To Free Speech.

It’s fascinating to watch the Left get all twisted up in realizing they are twice the racists they claim everyone else is.

Ha! The good DoctorDentons is in.

Stormy70 on April 16, 2007 at 9:05 AM

I always get a cute little tingle in my tummy when liberals eat their own. Hold it…….now…..digest.

lynnv on April 16, 2007 at 9:29 AM

Maher is a closet conservative.

~Just you wait.

locomotivebreath1901 on April 16, 2007 at 10:40 AM

So how does Maher explain the left constantly trying to make up issues to impeach Pres. Bush? Isn’t that part of the ‘gotcha culture’?

dalewalt on April 16, 2007 at 10:42 AM

I’ve been bashing Media Matters for months…they’re the most worthless and self-serious organization around.

Clearly no one around here watches Maher if this surprises you. He may be far-left but he’s far from a partisan hack and he will always tell you what he thinks.

Could you be any more uninformed? Have you heard Maher speak on the WOT and Islamofacists? Just because he’s a socialist and he loathes Bush doesn’t mean he’s ‘soft on terrorism,’ he’s actually quite militant. Does he have an agenda? Of course, but who on TV doesn’t.

JaHerer22 on April 16, 2007 at 12:03 PM

What’s that saying ‘There is no honor amoung thieves’? I think that applies to the liberal leftists quite well, don’t you?

docdave on April 15, 2007 at 9:35 PM

I believe the expression is “there is honor among thieves”. Are “liberal leftists” honorable thieves or dishonorable thieves? That’s what is known as “Hobson’s choice” I think.

Oh language.

Maher is upset because he didn’t get the lead role in the “Mr. Deity” shorts on You Tube.
