Marsden to Duke kids: Get over it, “silver spooners”

First she drops the ball on Imus, now this. Tough week for Rachel. The charitable explanation is that she simply doesn’t know the facts well enough to grasp the extent of the injustice committed here. Read this piece, the first in a series by the News & Observer, to see what a filthy weasel Nifong was from the beginning. And read this too.
In Rachel’s defense, there are some aspects of the case about which even the Duke kids won’t show the appropriate indignation. I wonder why.
The ratings have been healthy thus far so Fox is giving Gut and crew a shot in primetime tonight at 9 p.m. Smart move. It’s the only show I watch every day, mostly for the wit and banter but partly for the increasingly nasty exchanges among the cast. I’ve tacked a little example of that onto this clip. Enjoy.

You’d think she’d be even funnier drunk, but she just lost me Saturday night.
frankj on April 15, 2007 at 4:59 PM
Yeah, to be honest I liked it better before Greg did the “cold open”, however Mrs. Gutfeld after “opening a cold one” was hilarious last night, even though it seems no one knew what she was talking about.
RightWinged on April 15, 2007 at 5:03 PM
Mrs.Gutfeld did say she bought the big bottle of vodka on one of the previous shows. I love her. And Kevin. I haven’t forgotten his guns.
Stormy70 on April 15, 2007 at 5:16 PM
I have read the checkered past of Rachel. Well, it is ok. I did not intend to have Jesus himself to be on the show. It would be too much for me because I would fell unworthy to even criticize. Since she has made mistakes and I have made mistakes, it gives me the feeling of superiority. We should avoid ad hominem tu quoque attacks.
Well, you can’t have a funny, articulate, tough, liberal, and conservative michelle malkins in all fox news shows. You can’t even find them.
Ouabam on April 15, 2007 at 5:48 PM
At first I read this as “crafting my abs.” But once again my hopes are crushed by reading comprehension.
Jim Treacher on April 15, 2007 at 5:53 PM
I’m in total agreement with you there… except that her comments about the Duke players were outrageous, and I think people brought up her past because it pertained to the specific issue (false accusation of rape, in addition to her stalking past).
Though speaking for myself, as I noted earlier, I wasn’t even going to mention her past, though I had already read about it… I’m simply criticizing her performance on the show and her “conservative” credentials, her inability to tell a joke even chuckleworthy, and her inability to banter with the fellas when they tease her (instead she gets pissy and defensive, and winds up sounding even dumber).
Hey Andy, your mom called and your dinner is almost ready!
RightWinged on April 15, 2007 at 5:55 PM
And this whole silver spoon thing pisses me off. People assume that because I went to an elite university that I am somehow rich too. Huh. I was raised poor and spent most of my adult life poor. I went to that elite school because I worked my sorry butt off to get there and to pay for it (I am still paying for it). I am a high school teacher now and don’t make loads of cash for doing that, let me tell you.
So you know where you can shove that silver spoon.
Bob's Kid on April 15, 2007 at 6:29 PM
Your mom goes to college!!
dead-duck on April 15, 2007 at 7:04 PM
Just so we’re clear dead-duck, I was mocking one of Marsden’s ridiculously unfunny jokes, in which she said basically exactly what I just did, in a failed attempt to stick it to Andy. Perhaps you got that, but I just don’t really understand your response (unless you were just taking the same joke a step further).
RightWinged on April 15, 2007 at 7:11 PM
I think Debbie’s points in this thread have been totally overlooked. Clearly, Rachel is feeling a little guilt for her past experience in this same situation and deflecting that onto to the Duke players.
lorien1973 on April 15, 2007 at 7:25 PM
I’m watching the vocabulary show on GSN tonight, but its over at 9, I’ll definitely watch Red eye afterwards ;)
If nothing else, the dude who needs sleep (the ombudsman) is worth watching :P
lorien1973 on April 15, 2007 at 7:27 PM
heh, first rule of humor: if you have to explain it, it’s probably not funny ;) Oops.
But anyway, when I first saw the clip and her “mom” jokes, that was the first thing that popped into my head, IMO it was about the same caliber of “putdown” So when you repeated the joke, I responded accordingly.
… and I got the line from Napoleon Dynamite, in case you didn’t know that.
I’m just waiting for her to pull out the “yo momma” jokes…. I figure they have to be coming.
“Hey Andy, your mom is so stupid she tripped over the cordless phone!!”
*crickets*
“….because that would be stupid because the phone has no cord…”
*crickets*
“…and so, like, how can you trip over it? I mean, unless you left the base in the middle of the floor or something…. in which case she’s still stupid because you’re supposed to put a phone on a table or some other piece of furniture…”
*crickets*
“… so yeah, call your mom…. and she’ll probably trip over the cordless phone on the way to answer it… because she’s stupid… and thats the kind of things that stupid people do…. and when you get her on the phone, ask her if dinner’s ready yet”
dead-duck on April 15, 2007 at 7:30 PM
Sorry folks, I just don’t get Red Eye.
The show has too many “Dennis Miller” moments. You know, those moments where you aren’t sure whether you don’t get it because you’re not clever enough, or because the show’s panel are a bunch of idiots.
BacaDog on April 15, 2007 at 7:34 PM
Ahhh, gotcha now…. I just wasn’t sure if you got my joke, as I know a lot of people here aren’t regular RedEye viewers (yet), and still others may not have watched the clip… So I thought you didn’t get what I was doing there.
Anyway, I didn’t recall that line from Napoleon, but it sounds familiar now…
RightWinged on April 15, 2007 at 7:49 PM
That’s a charitable way to look at it. Add to total distain for the Duke players that the put-downs of the men on the show with “your mommy’s calling” are extremely pathetic and condescending. A true conservative woman would not resort to the “mommy” and “boys” schitck. Pure Liberal Left, male-hating, emasculating tripe. Conservative woman believe manliness is an asset, not a liability. Just do some anthropological surveys (informal) and listen to how Liberal women refer to men versus how conservative women refer to them.
(Just continuing to hammer at the “Rachel is a conservative” fraud.)
naliaka on April 15, 2007 at 8:09 PM
The two are not mutually exclusive.
Also, I got the joke that the one guy made and then the other guy didn’t get it so the first guy explained it and the other guy explained why he didn’t get it. That was fun.
Jim Treacher on April 15, 2007 at 8:26 PM
As someone from Victoria, BC, where Rachel Marsden went to school and falsely accused our fine swim coach and family man, Liam Donelly, of rape, harassment, and stalking (before she was convicted of stalking someone else), I find it hard to give much credibility to Rachel Marsden.
Christoph on April 15, 2007 at 8:46 PM
Oh, incidentally, the piss poor stalker movie, “Swimfan”, was loosely based on Rachel Marsden.
Christoph on April 15, 2007 at 8:47 PM
Yup, fun times….
BTW the first guy isn’t a guy at all ;)

Can’t it be both?
I thought I got all of that until Treacher “helped out.”
Hey, I didn’t used to blog as the Cranky Insomniac for nothin’…
Levy on April 15, 2007 at 10:50 PM
I tried watching red-eye a few times. There are many commentors here at HA who are so much better informed and thoughtful than the “hipsters” who would rather laugh at their own lame jokes while stepping on one anothers’ statements. Those people are trying way too hard to convince the audience how cool they are. I’ll stick to talk radio and HA.
Buck Turgidson on April 15, 2007 at 10:55 PM
You’re just jealous Buck Turgidson… or should I say Turd Buckingson! Oh snap!
Hey
LeveeLevy, I see you’ve been back… any chance of getting Bill to pull a stunt like this?http://newsbusters.org/node/2199
I know there is some flooding in the area, saw a Fox News broad walking around in ankle deep water earlier somewhere on Long Island.
Send Rachel if you have to, even she couldn’t make such a stunt unfunny… well, actually… she could probably find a way.
Anyway, you could take the mockery even further by sitting Bill in a regular canoe over top of a regular sized puddle… May not be your bag, but I need to see someone parody this!
RightWinged on April 15, 2007 at 11:06 PM
Buck,
Don’t take this the wrong way but the show might not be aimed at your demographic. I’m a few precious days from turning 40 and I find it hard to keep up with the banter, witty or not. At least you must find Mr Levy entertaining, no? I know he is rubbing the right people the wrong way.
I had an epiphany about Rachel and since everyone is piling on…I think she is really close to pulling a David Brock. Her conservatism seems contrived, just an act to set her apart from the pack. She is smart enough to reinvent herself a la Arianna Huffington. Look for a rather messy breakup with Redeye where the meanness and misogyny of the boys is exposed. Levy, I wouldn’t be alone in a room with her. Then the MarsdenPost to follow. Or its all part of their plan to draw us in with the drama of the fighting.
Bill C on April 15, 2007 at 11:34 PM
Yeah, thats it, I’m Jealous. Nice name calling. I guess everybody has to love your favorite show. Whatever.
Buck Turgidson on April 15, 2007 at 11:45 PM
Easy Buckaroo, it was a joke, though partly intended to see if I might get such a reaction. Not sure how you roll, but myself and friends of mine get a kick out of deliberately making cheesy and obviously juvenile jokes. It’s not easy to explain, but it’s sort of fun to mock the sitcom humor we grew up on. Or overusing the line “.. That’s what she said!” in response to things, as if we are 14 or something. It’s not meant in a genuine way, it’s humor for all… again, tough to explain.. but it relates to what a lot of us are complaining about with Rachel… Sometimes they just tease her, but instead of responding with her own self deprecating humor, she gets defensive, makes faces and snaps back with lame insults, when their joke wasn’t meant to be a serious argument in the first place.
And for the record, if you ever see me end in “Oh snap!”, you can safely assume I was joking about something. Anyone who uses that phrase, without doing it at least partially joking, is a total a-hole.
Again, sorry for the confusion, but I wasn’t really calling you “Turd” in an effort to defend RedEye… I think you know me well enough to know that if I was really trying to talk you in to becoming a fan, I’d have given it some effort… Name calling from me usually only comes out when libs keep repeating talking points and divert and dodge every issue, in which case I throw and “idiot” out there, to draw their attention back in.
RightWinged on April 16, 2007 at 12:00 AM
He is right now…. HE JUST DOESN’T KNOW IT!
RightWinged on April 16, 2007 at 12:03 AM
So, you would if she wasn’t harsh on those men. As for me, it would be a dream come to me.
Then, Allah would post, “A hotair commenter, “Ouabam is getting serious with Rachel.” While this is going on, I will be with my computer reading trash and jealous threats.
Ouabam on April 16, 2007 at 12:14 AM

Hey, no hard feelings RW, I rescanned the thread to figure out what I was missing. Sorry I missed the joke. I thought that might be the case, hence the measured reply. And thanks, Bill C. I’m 47, I admit using hipster and cool as an epithet makes me sound like Dana Carvy’s grumpy old man.
Buck Turgidson on April 16, 2007 at 12:16 AM
You did take it the wrong way. I’m sorry Buck. I wasn’t trying to insult you. I just thought you might not like the show because you were…more mature. Honest. Everybody is entitled to their sense of humor so please don’t think I was trying to dis you.
Bill C on April 16, 2007 at 12:19 AM
RightWinged on April 16, 2007 at 12:03 AM
No, I used to think she was hot a while back before 1. I realized it’s all legs, and 2. I learned that she has stalked men and falsely accused them of rape, and is in all likelihood certifiably nuts.
So I stand by my joke in response to Bill C saying he wouldn’t want to be alone with her in a room. Again, Levy is… HE JUST DOESN’T KNOW IT!
RightWinged on April 16, 2007 at 12:20 AM

RightWinged, you will live to be 100 yrs. You must be healthy given the conditions there. Remember to eat your vegetables. That is first step.
Ouabam on April 16, 2007 at 12:42 AM
Ha! I don’t feel healthy, though I look it… just high metabolism, but I’ve eaten more crap in my life than most people 3 or 4 times my age.
That said, interestingly enough I’m the only person I know that still has all 4 grandparents living, and I’ve found that odd even since I was in elementary school. All but one are in their early to mid 80s, and one grandmother is almost 77.
Considering modern medicine, I don’t see why many of us won’t live to be 100… but I’m not sure if I want to.

Levy on April 16, 2007 at 1:57 AM
Oh man, the Tweeden episode is re-airing right now and I just watched the part after the awkward Marsden joke about Bill, followed by Greg’s jab about her time in the make-up chair, to which she shot back the least witty comeback imaginable that amounted to “No! You spend a lot of time in make-up!”…. Followed by Greg specifically asking Will Durst to comment on something… Rachel butts in, Greg reprimands her because he was asking Will… she gets pissy and accusing him of not specifying Will (even though if you listen closely he did, but more importantly, it’s obvious (especially to those on set) whether he’s asking one of them the question, or someone off set…. We listen to a laughing Bill point out that it was spiraling out of control and it’s just the A block.
Again, guys, it was manageable a couple times, but RM is becoming a train wreck.
Anyway, time to check in with Andrew
LeveeLevy to see what’s in store for tomorrow’s stories, and what’s coming up next on Special Report with Brit Hume.RightWinged on April 16, 2007 at 2:34 AM
By the way dude, I’ll go toe to toe with you on Seinfeldisms any day.
RightWinged on April 16, 2007 at 2:35 AM
Uh, no. No-one on “The View” has been criminally convicted of stalking and falsely accused a man of rape, ruining his career. Which is why it’s especially ridiculous that FOX News hired and employs her. Even ABC doesn’t have anyone with this sort of record on staff.
More details:
* Criminal Court of Regina, British Columbia v. Marsden
* Stalking three men, falsely accusing one of rape, and other seriously creepy, bizarre behavior
What I find incredible is how many commenters here want to forgive and forget or not even mention any of this about her (even though many have written that they knew about it). Ask yourself: Would you reward Crystal Gail Mangum, the Duke false rape accuser, with a position (especially a position allegedly representing conservatives) on a major news network? If FOX News doesn’t have a problem doing so, then their whole coverage and moralizing against the Duke false rape accuser–now that the men have been cleared and they’ve outed her as Mangum–is phony.
Debbie Schlussel on April 16, 2007 at 8:50 AM
Marsden fills that void that’s existed since back in the g
lory days when my TV set was promoting Ariana Huffington as the voice of conservatism.Perchant on April 16, 2007 at 9:27 AM
Who IS this stupid, pompous, pathetic twit Marsden? I wonder if someone ever accused HER of molesting a child and a year later she were to be exonerated, would she be able to “get over it”? Something tells me…uh…NO…she wouldn’t!
lynnv on April 16, 2007 at 9:37 AM
Good morning. Gee, now that I’ve learned more about the show than I intended at the outset – I guess I’ll have to tune in. If red-eye is going to be a topic around here I’d better educate myself if for no other reason than to raise my critique above side-swipe. You win. I’m in.
Buck Turgidson on April 16, 2007 at 10:04 AM
Angela may not call Rachel “stupid”.
I will.
And her jokes suck.
HUGE.
Thank gaaawd this is on when no sane person is awake.
seejanemom on April 16, 2007 at 10:17 AM
Why are these guys so interested in whether they’re still going to have to have a trial to see if they go to jail for 20-30 years?
What kind of self-absorbed rich silver spooners worry about trivia like that when there’s a war on.
I’m sure if Rachel were looking at a year plus court trial, with the possibility of decades in jail, she wouldn’t even show up to the courthouse because she wants to focus solely on the war. She’d just ignore it and go on with her 24/7/365 concern of the war.
That, or her perception of reality is that everyone should react to everything based on how it affects her. Honey, sweetie, your ego doesn’t have a gravitational force, so the world doesn’t revolve around you.
gekkobear on April 16, 2007 at 12:31 PM
Must be because we’re forgiving people. Say Debbie, didn’t you once write a blog post about how atheists are morally equivalent to Islamic terrorists?
And you’re concerned that RACHEL is giving conservatism a bad name by making irresponsible, hysterical statements?
Enrique on April 16, 2007 at 12:45 PM
Rachel ain’t a conservative, but it’s disturbing to discover how so many people are calling her one, and it appears that the media is trying to pass her off as one. Like they are creating an excuse to give conservatives a bad name?
What’s going on here?
naliaka on April 16, 2007 at 1:07 PM
Never ever wrote such a thing. Hmmm . . . I thought most conservatives could read. You must be the exception. RIF–Reading is Fundamental. But just love how you are saying I am worse than a woman who stalked three men, was criminally prosecuted, and falsely accused a man of rape. Glad your sense of perspective is, er . . . “in order.”
Also, will you forgive Crystal Gail Mangum, the Duke accuser, who did the same thing? Think she should have a show on FOX? How about Jayson Blair? He did a lot less.
Debbie Schlussel on April 16, 2007 at 1:17 PM
I’m not conservative across the board, but I can read quite well.
I didn’t say you were worse than Rachel, although I certainly implied you were equivalent.
Now go to sleep, crazy lady.
Enrique on April 16, 2007 at 3:43 PM
Then you need to learn how to comprehend. The only thing I wrote was that many atheists are future Muslims–as they are–and that several atheists have become terrorists–and they have. That’s hardly the same as saying that atheists and Muslim terrorists are the moral equivalents of each other. I don’t believe that. But I do believe that you are in need of a mirror, especially for your last line. When you are stalked and/or falsely accused of rape, we shall see how “forgiving” you shall be. Comparing me to anyone who has done that–let alone was criminally charged with it and pled guilty to it, as is the case with her, is just pathetic. As for your name-calling, that is general the refuge for those who have no argument.
Debbie Schlussel on April 16, 2007 at 3:51 PM
OK, everybody. Breathe. Breathe again. Now cool yer jets.
OhioCoastie on April 16, 2007 at 5:22 PM
Here’s another name: Hair-splitter. You clearly implied that atheists and Muslim extremists are cut from the same cloth. Everyone who read your post knows that. I’m sure many Christians are future Muslims, but you sure didn’t call attention to them.
For the record, I do agree with you that Rachel is a whackjob who says absurd things. I’m only comparing you to her in the “says absurd things” category.
And I’ve said my fair share of absurd things, so there you go. :)
Enrique on April 16, 2007 at 5:48 PM
Debbie Schlussel,
Regarding your response – Debbie Schlussel on April 16, 2007 at 8:50 AM – to my comment that Rachel would be right at home on “The View.”
That was meant as sarcastic because Rachel seems to be as outrageous as the women at “The View.”
I was not endorsing her as a panelist on “Red Eye” or as a great orator. I find her comments deplorable, and I find her comments regarding the Duke students offensive.
Did my comment not come off as sarcastic?
Regarding her rape allegations, sorry, I did not know about them at all. Your comment is the first I head about them.
Thanks.
William
William2006 on April 16, 2007 at 6:22 PM
Oh?
Because the United States and other nations will be overrun by Muslims?
Because religions are products to be chosen by a person based on what it can offer them in the short/long term and Muslims have a superior product to Christians?
Or is it because of the fact that Christians are stooopid hicks that hate science and Muslims are teh sm4rt because they used the number zero and had rhyming poetry 258,000 years before those stooooopid Christians (who, on orders of Pope Hypocriticus XXVI were assassinating men and women of science on a daily basis with the help of Duke Cheney I of Haliburton-Upon-Thames)?
Look, I’m all for “absurd things” said in jest but… Dude. John Walker-Lindh, Adam Gahdan, Peter Murphy, and Cat Stevens are all off the top of my head prime examples of what Ms. Schussel’s point.
