Olbermann defends Michelle from Black Panther’s “prostitute” smear

While carefully emphasizing, of course, that there are a thousand other names she can and should be called. He’s apparently going to reiterate the point tonight on “Countdown,” doubtless within the context of listing some of those choicer adjectives he has in mind. We probably won’t have video.
Feeble expression of basic human decency or cynical maneuver to clean his own dirty, dirty hands before the right tries to parlay Imus fever into a full-bore attack on him? Johnny Dollar has no doubt which it is. Neither do I, really, although leftist expressions of humanity towards Michelle in any form and however motivated are so vanishingly rare that I’m reluctant to greet them with slaps.
I suspect the boss does not share my reluctance and will have something to say about this later. In the meantime, your exit question: Does Olby sincerely not understand that having sexist insults lobbed at her that she’s heard 500,000 times before isn’t remotely as vicious or insulting as blaming her for crimes committed by some degenerate who digs her writing?
Update: Context.

I’m sure what Olbermann meant to say was that comparing Michelle to prostitutes was demeaning to whores. The Keithster is such a dolt!

As Roman Maroni said in the classic gangster movie Johnny Dangerously: “This is fargin’ war.”

Just out of curiousity what names has Olby called Ann Coulter ?

Olby defending Michelle? Wasn’t April 1st two weeks ago?
soulsirkus on April 13, 2007 at 4:49 PM
While they’re making all of these asinine decisons, why don’t they just team him up with O.J.?
fogw on April 13, 2007 at 4:51 PM
MM is guest hosting for O’Reilly, and KO just happens to announce that he will be defending her on his show that happens to be broadcast at the exact same time. Oh no, that isn’t an obvious ploy to poach viewers. What do you call people that do anything for ratings/money regardless of principles?

Just to split hairs, I don’t think the use of the word “prostitute” in this sort context is necessarily sexist. For instance, during 2004 I could easily have seen one labeling Dan Rather a prostitute for the DNC. I think this kind of abstract use merely evokes the notion of one who has willingly sold out their integrity and decency, and isn’t gender specific. (I don’t listen to him often, but I seem to recall Michael Savage is fond of applying the term to both men and women in the way I mean–it’s certainly harsh, but nevertheless not sexist.)
That said, in this particular case I suspect Michelle was in fact being called a prostitute because she was female, and that this thug (I’m glad to not recall his name) would not have used the same phrasing if speaking to a male. But in the odd event I’m wrong, it’s a wonderfully poorly-timed verbal mis-step to make on the heels of the whole “ho” scandal, isn’t it?

Followed by the newspaper headline: FARGIN WAR!
Great movie. Thanks for the reminder.

Ready for a head-exploding fact?
Ann Coulter and Kieth Olberman both attended the same university, although they were a decade or so apart.
I know this because I saw Olby’s face plastered on my alumni magazine last month. Made me ill.
The place was / is fairly lefty, but still. I’ve never encountered anyone there as crazy as Olby. Er, other than the faculty.

Ya know, no matter how deep in it I get, there are just some people that I don’t want trying to help me.

So, if I describe Nancy Pelosi as a “prostitute” for the democratic party, that would be acceptable, Blacklake??
gary on April 13, 2007 at 5:05 PM
You call them whores and Olby is his own special brand of one. He can save his psuedo-sympathy for Don Imus and leave legitimate public personalities out of it.
thedecider on April 13, 2007 at 5:07 PM
Olby doesn’t have a pair to defend MM……..
PinkyBigglesworth on April 13, 2007 at 5:12 PM
It’s not a mis-step. This is the way the guy talks. He’s just not used to talking to anyone outside his circle of syncophants so he seems to be actually unable to speak in a civilized manner. It didn’t take much at all for Michelle to show everyone what kind of character he is.
Bill Cosby is right, 100%. He is telling the Black community that to allow Black gangsta to define the mainstream Black culture is not only pathetic but self-destructive.
Maybe this sort of thing will finally get the silent majority of African-Americans riled enough to figure out how to get their voices heard over the potty-mouthed talk of people who claim to speak for them.

I think its the same reason The view women are sorta defending Imus, the bar has been raised and now everyone is hunting for the next Imus to take down. That includes Rosie, Olbermann and any other leftist host. As Olbermannwatch pointed out Olbermann himself has been guilty of terms that could backfire on him.
Plus he wants to show how he is righteous and stuff.

I wouldn’t think it’d make sense in that case, because she’s an actual overt member of the party. I guess if one felt the need to extend the metaphor, she’d be more like a pimp for the Democrat Party, not a prostitute–somebody who sells and exploits it, not somebody who is used and exploited by it.
If you really wanted to draw it out, Chuck Hagel and Arlen Specter might make better examples of “prostitutes” for the Democrat party…though like I said, it’s a harsh metaphor. I wouldn’t use it to describe them, myself (though, hypothetically, somebody like Michael Savage might, and without being sexist).
At any rate, I never said anything about it being acceptable, anyway. My point was that it might not in all cases be sexist, because it seems there are cases where it could be and is sometimes applied to males (though, as I said, I suspect that in Michelle’s case it was indeed intended to be sexist). There’s all sorts of language that isn’t at all sexist, but is still unacceptable in civil discourse.

“Olbermann defends Michelle from Black Panther’s “prostitute” smear”
So what. That’s kinda like an addict’s promise or a leper’s kiss – worthless & unwanted.
Besides, herr ubermann is next to have the msnbc revolving door to whack his butt on the way out.
locomotivebreath1901 on April 13, 2007 at 6:15 PM
Olby is a coward that is interested in preserving his own hide above all else. No doubt he saw the thrashing that the unhinged wackos took last night on The Factor. I think he’s scared. (Remember — Bryan already pointed us to links that reveal that Olby used to get beat-up by the girls at school.) Fear can be a powerful motivating factor. Anybody wanna’ bet that Olby wet his pants last night when he viewed the video segment containing the portion of the interview where Michelle treated Shabazz to a sub-zero glare capable of peeling the paint off of the studio walls?
Hmmm. What should we call a guy that is scared of a 5′1″ 99 pound female? Calling him a “wuss” is too kind — and somehow just doesn’t seem adequate. Too bad the “f@gg*t” word has such a stigma attached to it.

KO dose know that all those left-wing web sites he panders too say the same if not worse things about her like this Black Panther idiot?

Jim Treacher on April 13, 2007 at 8:44 PM
IMHO it’s more that the democrat party has prostituted itself to the likes of Pelosi.
conservativecaveman on April 13, 2007 at 8:51 PM
I think he was being sincere.
aengus on April 13, 2007 at 9:47 PM
MM is no fool. The only thing you can be sure of is, whatever you give KO will be used against you, sooner or later and probably sooner.
petefrt on April 13, 2007 at 9:55 PM
See Olbermann is not all that bad. Watch count down, 8 pm and re-run at 12am. You have top three news makers, odd ball, worst persons in the world and keeping tabs. At the top of the show the first 2 of the 5 main stories are had core politics, usually with 2 or more guest analyst that are real sharp and NOT partisan or liberal. They will not blow conservative smoke up your ear or repeat GOP talking points, but its pretty good. A good balance to Fox. Get the other side of the story.
