The double-voice thing makes it look worse than it is, but it’s bad. I turned off the sound and it still looked pretty un-lifelike.

There’s a reason for that, unfortunately I can’t recall the right words to find a link that explains better than I can.

For relatively crude animation and robotics, its obvious to the viewer the “person” being modeled isn’t real, so our brain happily suspends disbelief and we “accept” the character and are comfortable with it. As the animation/robot becomes more lifelike, our “comfort” level increases -to a point. As things get too realistic, the brain has more trouble accepting it as artificial, glossing over the imperfections, and starts perceiving it as being real. When perceived as “real” the imperfections are disconcerting or “freaky” because we can’t suspend disbelief very easily. The take-home for animators was, don’t try to make it too lifelike, because short of perfection it will only distance viewers.

Starting from the other end, consider how some people who’ve had plastic surgery or botox treatements can similarly look “freaky”, because our brains are extremely adept at picking up facial “abnormalies” not only in appearance, but in the dynamics of facial movement during speech.

Just re-making the original, not so much.

Did any movie in the 70’s actually have a coherent plot, come to think about it?

Did any Sci-Fi movie in the 70′s have a sober audience?

I want to see it say: “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe; attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion…”

So, I think it’s like this. This was the full force of the generation raised to actually believe that the worst thing you can be is a racist, a sexist, or a homophobe (cutting off heads — no problem) getting to show their stuff. Lot’s of these brainwashees now work for NBC/CBS. Imus hit 2 out of three(racist/sexist) — see ya — sad — in so many ways.
