Video: “Civic Duty” trailer

The news is runnin’ like molasses today so we may have to go to the all-video format. I held off on posting this because the film came out last year, but See-Dub tells me that that was just a few festivals; it’s scheduled for (limited) release in the U.S. next month, which I guess makes it newsy enough to warrant a post.

From the looks of it, the working title must have been “Wingnut: The Movie.” The left loves to pretend its blithe ignorance of the threat is actually a manifestation of courage and composure, such that the flip side is and can only be a barking lunatic breaking into Arabs’ apartments to look for bombs. But here’s a surprise: I snuck a peek at a few reviews and there’s apparently a twist at the end. What do you suppose it is? The obvious possibility is that the next-door neighbor really is a terrorist, but it can’t be that; there’s no way they’re going to validate the Chimp-hitler’s war of oily aggression by implication. I figure it must be that the neighbor is with the FBI and working undercover to bust jihadis and the protagonist has unwittingly stumbled onto his sting. That would also point the finger at Muslim terrorists, of course, but since the neighbor’s also a Muslim and one of the good guys, it’s a wash.

Anyway, here you go. Nice touch with the Chimpy voiceover.

It features that slug from “Six Feet Under”? Say no more. Pass.

Kinda looks like a rip off of Arlington Road with Muslims added just to make it provocative.

…and featuring JaHerer22 as the Chimpy voice.

seejanemom on April 12, 2007 at 3:59 PM

Seems like there’s a pinch of Rear Window thrown in too.

AP, sounds similar to Arlington Road w/ Robbins & Bridges.

Civic Doody.

Citizen Duck on April 12, 2007 at 4:27 PM

There’s a South Park episode just like that where Cartman is an amateur Jack Bauer investigating a Muslim kid.

aengus on April 12, 2007 at 4:33 PM

If it’s such a slow afternoon, can we finally having our frakking BSG season finale thread?

From the Variety review:

Krause, best known for HBO’s “Six Feet Under,” blends varying degrees of cockiness, stubbornness, obsessive paranoia, extreme sarcasm and (least attractive of all) self-pity in a blistering turn that seems deliberately determined to repel the viewer’s sympathy.

So, it sounds like he is playing the Hollywood version of a “Wignut.” I’m sure some well-informed Liberals will view this together on a Saturday night then have a thoughtful roundtable discussion (with wine & cheese) on BushCo, evil Wignuts and dangerous neocon white males.

A little, but at least with Arlington Road… well, I was about to write in the spoiler, but let me just say that I imagine the twist is a much better one.

Esthier on April 12, 2007 at 5:08 PM

their contempt for us is such that the “twist” will be that the guy isn’t a terrorist. their view of us is that we’re not just unclever, but so stupid that we’re surprised by jack-in-the-box endings.

jummy on April 12, 2007 at 5:12 PM

It doesn’t really matter if there’s a twist or not. the point is they’re promoting this based on a lead character who cares about terrorism not because he’s a patriot but because he’s unemployable, obsessive, racist, violent, and paranoid.

You can’t have any other kind.

see-dubya on April 12, 2007 at 5:18 PM

in fact, the “twist” is not just that the guy is innocent, but this is discovered only after the wingnut kills both of them in a suicide bombing. you see, the “twist” is that by succumbing to fear, we become terrorists ourselves.

jummy on April 12, 2007 at 5:19 PM

I didn’t click on the like to iFilm to see the trailer because I know that Krause is a hardcore leftist that cherry-picks his acting roles based on a hard left political message. Therefore, I knew this would not be to my liking.

Speaking of movie reviews, here’s the money quote from one of the reviews of Civic Duty:

But if we can take home one message, it’s this: America is responsible for the antagonism targeting it before and after 9/11; and the victim of this whole tragedy is the average, ignorant American, whose complacence and apathy vis-à-vis the rest of the world has cost him a hefty price.

Yep, now I’m really glad that I didn’t click on the link to give iFilm the hits.

The Ugly American on April 12, 2007 at 5:44 PM

I played it without sound and it looked like he was the hero.

“Unless he goes out with a warhead on his back he is just a regular guy.”

Yeah, because you know, the “regular guys” on those airplanes were just harmless.

DeathtotheSwiss on April 12, 2007 at 5:58 PM

All else aside, the one line the wife says is the epitome of what we see all over the world.

He is just our neighbor and it is not our problem.

DeathtotheSwiss on April 12, 2007 at 5:55 PM

hey, what are you going to do? there were some idiot young republicans i spoke with who thought v for vengance was a conservative-friendly movie. the fact is that many conservatives are completely illiterate, so maybe i shouldn’t be so smug about the “twist”.

jummy on April 12, 2007 at 6:06 PM

Do you know

What terror looks like?

Mazztek on April 12, 2007 at 6:22 PM

I suspect the film ends with Christian “extremists” being arrested.

gary on April 12, 2007 at 6:23 PM

and that was sarcasm for those in rio linda

gary on April 12, 2007 at 6:24 PM

the variety review is the only honest one. get this quote:

Volatile combo of claustrophobic suspense and topical concerns could propel pic to limited commercial success in specialized arenas.

in other words, everyone will hate it or sleep through it. liberal test-screeners will giive it impossibly high marks, but in actual release will wait for it to come out on dvd.

…becomes borderline ludicrous in the second half, as Terry forces a violent confrontation that will have any rational viewer rooting for the alleged terrorist. That’s the effect Renfroe is after, anyway…

all the rest of the reviews are going aggressively for the olberman demo:

…a thinking person’s thriller…

…taps into our current national paranoia about terrorism…

you get the picture.

jummy on April 12, 2007 at 6:33 PM

Speaking of wingnut portrayals…

If you think the comedy writing on the Half Hours News Hour is bad, check this out

I certainly hope they never stoop to anything that lame.

Just what I need. I live 2 blocks from two mosques and surrounded by muslims.

Ropera on April 12, 2007 at 7:20 PM

I didn’t think it looked to bad; I’m willing to give it the BOD until I see more of it, at least

And hey, I thought the ‘it’s not our problem’ quote summed up quite nicely the attitude of waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many people

Ropera: You should watch this

Radicalisation of UK mosques by Saudi Wahabbism

You should gather some of the literature those mosques are giving out and see what it says.
