Time for another stupid “Republican doesn’t buy his own groceries” hit piece
posted at 7:28 pm on April 11, 2007 by Allahpundit
This won’t work for them as well as it did last time, when Bush I got the deer-in-the-headlights look when he saw the electronic scanner at the supermarket. They used that incident to contrast him with sax-playing McDonald’s fanboy Bubba Clinton, but Rudy’s no more or less common than anyone else in the field. Wake me when you see Hillary or the Breck Girl pushing a wagon at Pathmark.
Still, embarrassing:
Campaigning in Alabama on Tuesday, the former New York City mayor portrayed himself as a fiscal conservative and an aggressive fighter of terrorism who has a lot in common with the Deep South state.
But when asked about more mundane matters — like the price of some basic staples — Giuliani had trouble with a reporter’s question.
“A gallon of milk is probably about a $1.50, a loaf of bread about a $1.25, $1.30,” he said.
A check of the Web site for D’Agostino supermarket on Manhattan’s Upper East Side showed a gallon of milk priced at $4.19 and a loaf of white bread at $2.99 to $3.39. In Montgomery, Ala., a gallon of milk goes for about $3.39 and bread is about $2.
With geometric logic, the Kossacks complain that this proves he’s out of touch because he obviously hasn’t been briefed by his handlers on supermarket prices the way those salt-of-the-earth Democrats with their people-powered entourages surely have been.
In other Rudy news, libertarian and social con critics are each trying to get traction from his Schiavo comments, without much luck. America’s tired, boys.

Rudy doesn’t know the price of milk or bread?!?
He simply cannot be trusted on national defense.
Paging Andy Hiller…

Man, people in Manhattan are paying 4.19 for milk. What a bunch of idiots!
jaleach on April 11, 2007 at 7:33 PM
The ultimate nonstory. I do all the grocery shopping in my household and I couldn’t even give you the price. All I know is, my boy wants the milk, I buy it. I could quote you the price of ice cream, ground beef, pork, potato chips, mozzarella cheese and roast beef at the deli counter, but the price of a gallon of milk at Shoprite? No idea. Three bucks, maybe.
Let’s be honest, I doubt Rudy has gone grocery shopping in the past 30 years. Who gives a sh*t?
JammieWearingFool on April 11, 2007 at 7:35 PM
I bet the lefts housekeepers can tell you the price of a loaf of bread;just not in english.Let the grocery sniping begin.
spazzmomma on April 11, 2007 at 7:35 PM
Good point. Now that you mention it, I have absolutely no idea how much milk costs. I think it’s around three bucks.
Now, if Rudy didn’t know the price of something important, like beer or a bottle of Tabasco sauce, then we’d have issues.
Slublog on April 11, 2007 at 7:37 PM
He should have said “Who do I look like, the freakin’ Secretary of Agriculture over here?”.
Besides, Bush got a bad rap on the scanner thing. What he was shown was a new combination produce scale and scanner, capable of handling labels bent or torn beyond what previous scanners could deal with.

Wow……he is just like me! I might end up voting for him yet. I just hate the grocery store. My wife sends me, I bring home everything that looks good. Then I get a scolding. She does all the shopping, not because I told her too, but because she told me not to. Put it in the cart, take it home and eat it, that’s what real men do.
Limerick on April 11, 2007 at 7:43 PM
As if John and Liz know the price of any of this stuff … (rolls eyes).
Not a Rudy fan here, but this critique really is lame.
thirteen28 on April 11, 2007 at 7:43 PM
I’m really not sure I could vote for someone willing to pay that much for milk and bread. I do a great deal of our grocery-getting. I can tell you that a gallon of store-brand milk goes for about $3.00 down here and a loaf of sandwich wheat goes for around $2.00. I’m not counting sales or coupons.
All of that means one of two things: 1) I really look for bargains, or 2) I’m more qualified than RG to run this wreck of a republic.
SailorDave on April 11, 2007 at 7:46 PM
Can somebody give me the name of the 2 guys in America who can tell you the price of milk and bread?
*sigh* How about a real mans’ questions like the team ERA of the Yankees or the best NFL team ever.
LakeRuins on April 11, 2007 at 7:48 PM
I bet the Clenis can tell you the price of Midol within 2 cents.
SailorDave on April 11, 2007 at 7:50 PM
He decides to go walmart and get cheap somethings. His fiscal conservative side would be forgotten; instead, he would treated as someone supporting the greatest evil in the world.
Ouabam on April 11, 2007 at 7:50 PM
The pop quizzes from reporters about world leaders were bad enough. But grocery prices? Come on.
“Mr. Giuliani? Can you name the last three finalists from American Idol?” “No?!?” “This man is out of touch with America!”
brak on April 11, 2007 at 7:51 PM
The other stupid thing about this non-story is that they picked a really over-priced store. At my store, Milk is 1.99 gallon, and bread is between 99 cents and 1.50.
Spassvogel on April 11, 2007 at 7:55 PM
I will worry more about Rudy buying groceries when I worry less about Hillary standing on Ground Zero fighting off a terrorist attack.
William Amos on April 11, 2007 at 8:00 PM
Didn’t Pelosi put some guy in charge of foreign affairs cmte. that did not know sh*t about terrorism and there religious affiliation. Never heard of a gallon of milk taking some guys head off. Don’t know about a loaf of bread, that aisle always gave me the creeps. The wheat was always seperated from the white bread, seperate from the Jewish Rye, French bread was always stuck in the corner, buns out in the open…a whole aisle of racism, sexism and nationalism.
right2bright on April 11, 2007 at 8:01 PM
2.00 man thats low 3 something here. and 2 for bread I think, hell I never look at prices.
djohn669 on April 11, 2007 at 8:03 PM
i bought bread yesterday and i’m not sure how much it costs. its bread – its about $2, who cares exactly how much it is.
lorien1973 on April 11, 2007 at 8:08 PM
how dumb can the left be?
Defector01 on April 11, 2007 at 8:14 PM
My thoughts exactly!
I went grocery shopping yesterday where I purchased both bread and milk and I’m not sure what it costs.
I do know that I looked at bread that ranged in price from $0.99/loaf to $4.99/loaf looking for a balance of lots of fiber and no corn syrup.
Why do they put CORN SYRUP in WHEAT BREAD?!?
As for milk….well…..I haven’t bought a gallon in years. But I have no idea what I paid for the half gallon yesterday.
My guess is that the human brain has a finite capacity for memory. I would not give a flying flip if the President didn’t waste space in his brain with the cost of groceries. As long as he remembers where that oil price control knob is, I’m happy.
JadeNYU on April 11, 2007 at 8:17 PM
They put corn syrup in everything. Damn corn lobby.
brak on April 11, 2007 at 8:24 PM
We should ask Pelosi how much the average botox treatment and chemical peel costs. I’m sure she would know that exactly and that would be embarrassing.
foxforce91 on April 11, 2007 at 8:31 PM
I can tell you a 12 Pack of Cherry Pepsi was on sale for $1.99 at PW Market. Needless to say, i bought big!
JayHaw Phrenzie on April 11, 2007 at 8:32 PM
Oh yeah, just the other day I was in the market and Rudy was wandering around looking for the cheese-wiz!!!!!!!
NEMETI IN SYRACUSE on April 11, 2007 at 8:35 PM
This is totally a guy thing–nothing to do with Rs v. Ds. My husband has absolutely no clue what anything costs, except maybe for cars. Actually, it’s even worse than that:
Couple of years ago a new SUPER supermarket opened in our area. He wanted to check it out, so I told him to pick up a loaf of bread while he was there. He came home without the bread and told me that they didn’t have any–none whatsoever. Said he walked around the whole place twice and they simply did not carry bread.
I report; you decide.
IrishEi on April 11, 2007 at 8:39 PM
Talking about food and Montgomery, Ala. makes me crave Chris’ hot dogs on Dexter Ave., the best hot dogs in the U.S., even better than the Varsity in Atlanta.
januarius on April 11, 2007 at 8:41 PM
I’m going to ask the girl at the checkout counter what Israel’s stance on Lebanon is right now. If she can’t answer, she’s not fit to check out my groceries.
Vincenzo on April 11, 2007 at 8:44 PM
Oh, by the way…. Does anyone the price of a burger at Corner Bistro on the West Side in Manhattan? For those of you visiting our great city, be sure to stop and have the city’s best burger at a price cheaper than many fast food joints.
Vincenzo on April 11, 2007 at 8:46 PM
We have a winner! LOL
fogw on April 11, 2007 at 8:46 PM
Based on prices in Toronto, Rudy’s estimate of bread cost was right on. I don’t buy milk so I don’t know about that. I’m no Giuliani fan (I’d rather have Hillary win), but this is brain numbingly stupid. Who the hell cares about buying groceries, God invented women for a reason.
Darth Executor on April 11, 2007 at 8:48 PM
Lame.
I go to the grocery store all the time and have no idea how much bread or milk costs.
Lets focus on something important.
JaHerer22 on April 11, 2007 at 9:02 PM
Why would a New Yorker know the price of anything in AL?
He may as well be in another country in terms of the cost of living, taxes, etc. There really is no comparison. I lived in AL for 24 years and worked in the NE for 2 years. Trust me.
DB on April 11, 2007 at 9:05 PM
Milk?
I only buy milk if I’m baking.
Now I can tell you that a Gallon of Lemon Iced Tea is $1.25
A pack of 8 Hamburger Rolls is $1.50…
And Lets see, Pizza Buffets are usually $5.50 a person (Drink included) While Steak Buffets are $10.60 per person.
Jones Zemkophill on April 11, 2007 at 9:31 PM
I run into Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein standing in line at the Safeway all the time! (not)
crosspatch on April 11, 2007 at 10:28 PM
The price of either bread or milk–as a fraction of his net work–is probably on the order of 1e-8. Spare me.
And, for what it’s worth, I probably would have guessed the same numbers–maybe as much as $2.50 on milk–and I do my own shopping.
DaveS on April 11, 2007 at 11:09 PM
Anyone bought a gallon of gas these days?
PinkyBigglesworth on April 12, 2007 at 1:53 AM
What a stupid story. I do not want my Presidential candidate running to the A&P or doing his own laundry. He has more freaking important things to do. Like Hillary or Bill go to the grocery store…beyond stupid, but then approx 25% of the American population is retarded, so perhaps that explains why this story is so fascinating to all the little libtards…
JustTruth101 on April 12, 2007 at 2:07 AM
I don’t know and I DON”T CARE about the price of milk and bread. I work hard. I’ve got money. MY money. I just get these items out of the bin and plunk down the dead presidents. Walk out to my PAID FOR car to drive to my PAID FOR house. Bite my ass you simpering, can’t BUY a job, socialist, FOOLS!
james hooker on April 12, 2007 at 2:59 AM
How truly stupid.
I agree with some of the others – I do ALL the shopping, and I just realized I have no clue what I pay for milk or bread. I’m not sure I could guess to within a dollar on either.
Obviously I’m a filthy rich out of touch elitist. Nice to know.
Meanwhile, somewhere deep in the hated redneck southland of Jesus country, a Silky Pony is wandering aimlessly, lost in the labyrinth of his 20,000 square foot mansion o’ the common man …
Professor Blather on April 12, 2007 at 9:31 AM
Maybe Rudy is just trying to appeal to people outside of New York, because my milk and bread aren’t too far from that. I pay maybe 2 bucks for milk and often get bread for a dollar.
I’m nearly horrified at the prices quoted for those two places.
Esthier on April 12, 2007 at 10:07 AM
Pfft.
Those prices were dead-on for the Western New York area. I dunno where these reporters are getting their groceries, but they are paying WAY too much.
As long as he knows the price of a sixpack of beer (between 5 and 10 bucks, depending on the brand and store) I’m good. something EVERY man should know is the general cost of a sixpack of beer.
Besides, I can think of other much more important issues to diagree with Rudy on than the stinking price of Milk in Manhattan.
wearyman on April 12, 2007 at 11:13 AM
You mean the President of the United States is supposed to do my grocery shopping. Damn!
Bush! Where’s my stinking Cheetoes dammit!
Can’t get decent help anywhere….
Somehow I doubt Billary of Skerry have a clue what the price of bread or milk is.
CrazyFool on April 12, 2007 at 11:44 AM
Of course Rudy wouldn’t know the prices of groceries. That was his wife’s job to do.
A BETTER question might be, WHICH WIFE?
seejanemom on April 12, 2007 at 1:53 PM
Um. Anyone here in the Midwest ever shop at Aldi? You can get a loaf of bread for 59 cents last I checked. I haven’t bought milk in a long time, but last I remember it was under 1.50.
Manhattan prices? Are you kidding me? Who’s out of touch here, Rudy or the reporter?
