Shock: Diggbats go wild for Michelle’s column about Imus

Lots of comments of the “I hate Malkin, but…” variety, but it’s a start. I guess there are some truths that even their political prejudices can’t resist.
Clicky clicky for the full-size.
Exit question: They’re scarred for life?
Update: Baseball Crank echoes something a friend said to me yesterday about the Rutgers basketball team looking like it had been assaulted. The irony of BC’s post is that the coach did at one point in the press conference acknowledge that no one can make you feel inferior without your consent — before rambling on for 20 minutes about how grievously painful Imus’s comments had been to her and her players. Huh?
Update: The Diggbats get it but the left’s dumbest blogger naturally doesn’t. Goldstein bangs his own head against a wall.

I’m no fan of Imus, but this is getting ridiculous.
“Scarred for life…” Give me a break.

Scarred for life?…these girls do not get out much do they?
EnochCain on April 11, 2007 at 11:19 AM
My lib friend in NYC won’t read the article (I emailed him a copy) because MM is a “mean poopie-head”. OK, I’m paraphrasing, but the opinion is at that level.
stonemeister on April 11, 2007 at 11:20 AM
What a shame that her parents didn’t raise her with a better sense of self awareness. Does she really give a crap what Don Imus thinks or says?
As usual, Rush Limbaugh nailed this issue. A caller from Wisconsin — black lady — summed it up perfectly when she said that if her daughter were one of these girls, she wouldn’t have gone to some stupid press conference. Wouldn’t even waste her time. Why would she? Don Imus doesn’t define anything in her world.
Jaibones on April 11, 2007 at 11:21 AM
Rutgers womens basketball team scarred for life because of what someone said about them….maybe they should have a talk with the Houston Texans and see how they handle the horrible things they get called every Sunday.
EnochCain on April 11, 2007 at 11:22 AM
My local paper has an article today (as God is my witness) on nappiness (of hair)–what it means, history of, literary references. Sweet Mother of God.

Never Ever Apologize. Ever. They will use your apology like a shoe and beat you to death with it.
Zetterson on April 11, 2007 at 11:24 AM
There is so much wrong with this quote that I don’t know where to start.
I guess I’ll just focus on the fact that, if you allow an ignorant comment from a has-been (or never was?) radio host to scar you for life you’re rather sad (pathetic even).
In junior high, I had a girl tear up the math paper I was working on because she didn’t like how I was looking at her. I told the teacher, she sent me to the vice principal and the vice principal’s response was “Well, how were you looking at her?” She sent me off with the advice to ‘watch myself’.
My sister had it even worse. In 5 grade a girl at her lunch table poured chocolate milk on her because she felt my sister was just a little ‘too white’. The school said there was nothing they could do about it. My sister (with my mom’s permission) bleached her hair platinum blonde and went back the next day even whiter than before. In 7th grade, a football player decided my sister was taking too long at the water fountain and pushed her out of the way (causing her to fall down a very small flight of stairs). As he pushed her he said, “What, do you think this is the private water fountain for white girls?” Again, the school said they couldn’t do anything.
My point being that everyone has bad experiences. If you allow them to scar you for life (and yes, I believe it is a personal choice to allow things of this nature to greatly affect you) the only person you’re hurting is yourself.
JadeNYU on April 11, 2007 at 11:24 AM
Oh and one last thing…I grew up in the south(Alabama) and I have been insulted more times than I can remember with “redneck” “do you sleep with your sister” etc. and its even acceptable to make these jokes on TV and in movies….these girls are going to be in for a long rough life if they can’t handle this.

Check that out Michelle! It’s now criminal to be Conservative! Who’da Thunk It?

It must be exhausting to go through life being this offended about what people like Don freaking Imus say about you. “Scarred for life” because of what someone who has never met you and doesn’t know you says about you? Get a grip, ladies.
World B. Free on April 11, 2007 at 11:29 AM
All the “scarred for life” talk is just priming the pump for the class-action civil suit.
db on April 11, 2007 at 11:33 AM
“even though she is guilty of being criminally conservative”
I can see I am not the only one who got that. Maybe Michelle should use it as a motto.
“Malkin, criminal conservatism at its best!”

If we could confront Iran with the same resolve we show against … Imus?

JadeNYU on April 11, 2007 at 11:24 AM
…so, how were you looking at her????
honora on April 11, 2007 at 11:41 AM
These are young women who were called whores on a national
program by a well known public figure. They have had
to listen to those comments replayed dozens of times a
day since. It was said about the personally, not just lyrics in a song. Who are we to say how they should feel
about that?
TheBigOldDog on April 11, 2007 at 11:46 AM
Ahhh…I miss the time when Tin Pan Alley was the wildest song in town…
Ropera on April 11, 2007 at 11:47 AM
You got that right, db. Bet ya when they show up to chat with Imus they have Jesse “Shakedown” Jackson in tow. Reminds me of the “Kramer” situation. Get offended, then line up at the trough with Jesse, Al, and the gang.
RW Wacko on April 11, 2007 at 11:48 AM
Scarred for life? I bet when Tawana Brawley calls in sick for work her coworkers joke behind her back that she is “back in the body bag taking a poo nap.”
But for Rutgers, who worked so hard to get to the National Championship, and to have a disappointing loss- rather than getting to look back fondly on a wonderful season of their youth, it will be forever tainted by this stupid scandal which clearly overshadowed their accomplishments. Scarring? I don’t know, but Im sure it soured what should have been a terrific memory.

Why every other site has “Digg” on it is beyond me.
Seems the 12-15 year-old demographic matters to someone.

Sad thing is, I imagine if I looked hard enough, I could find some REAL nappy-headed hos who are seriously offended at these girls such… offended lady like persons.

So when do the “Racism is America” specials start?
Voice Over Guy: Tonight, A special report, *DRAMATIC SOMBER MUSIC* RACISM IN AMERICA: IS IT ALIVE AND WELL?
Hello, I’m [news anchor's name here] Our special report will expose the nature of race relations in America, we will speak with a variety of experts and conduct some experiments of our own, and speak to people on the street and civil rights leaders about Race:*Dramatic music* in America…
——
You totally know this is coming, they have these kinds of specials sitting on the shelf for everytime a moron like John Rocker or Imus says something stupid and the media can start a big news cycle.
Bad Candy on April 11, 2007 at 12:10 PM
Yeah they’re scarred for life not because Imus, a no talent hack, insulted them on a relatively low rated show, they’re impacted because of the media circus complete with live press conferences and every pundit in the universe giving their opinion.
They’re the nappy headed ho team not because Imus said it, but because it’s been sensationalized out of all proportion.
This whole thing is funny to me. How much more racially uptight can we get?
Dash on April 11, 2007 at 12:17 PM
That’s an awesome story.
The people who own what they’re being insulted for deserve an incredible amount of respect. The basketball players should show up to the “debate” with Imus wearing trashy clothes with their hair all poofed up.
Esthier on April 11, 2007 at 12:23 PM
Our culture has become insanely ridiculous. No wonder the whole world hates us, BooHoo Mr. Bean style
doginblack on April 11, 2007 at 12:27 PM
That’s a good point.
Esthier on April 11, 2007 at 12:37 PM
For the record, I, and most of America never heard of the Rutgers Woman’s Basketball team, and after this weeks “controversy” blows over, I will never again think of them for the rest of my life.
Imus, did them a favor, he made them famous.
I do not belive that he should be fired, unless his ratings go down and his employer loses money. It’s called the Free Market.
JayHaw Phrenzie on April 11, 2007 at 12:40 PM
I see your point, the Rutgers woman were disparaged and have a right to be mad. Scarred for life? Not so much. The only people who are scarring them for life are the media, Rainbow/Push and Sharpton. If they allow themselves to be turned into victims, then it’s their own fault.
SouthernDem on April 11, 2007 at 12:46 PM
Al Sharpton is a Punk !!!
Jesse Jackson is a Pimp !!!!
TheFamousOne on April 11, 2007 at 12:53 PM
Michelle,
You made you point very effectively with this article. It was long overdue. Someone needed to point to the obvious a long time ago. No doubt you will take some heat for it. It might have been more meaningful if someone from the black community had penned a similar article. I am sure that there are already some “out there.” Unfortunately, they will probably go unnoticed.
As some posters at the web-site referenced above (by AllahPundit) have already pointed out, the impact of your article will be somewhat compromised or diminished by your unfortunate choice of words in the closing sentence (viz. your reference to Tourette’s syndrome).
Although I was not offended by your comparison to Tourette’s syndrome, I AM compelled to point out that your analogy is somewhat inaccurate. The correct terminology is “coprapralia.” Only a tiny minority of the sufferers of Tourette’s syndrome (something like 5-10 %) have it. I do not claim to be an expert on the matter, but I DO know a little something about it. My son has suffered from Tourette’s syndrome throughout his childhood, his teenage years, and into young adulthood.
Of course, the MOST inaccurate thing about your analogy is that fact that coprapralia is completely compulsive and involuntary (like a sneeze). We can hardly say the same thing for the so-called rap “artists” whose foul utterances are completely voluntary, inexcusable, and perhaps deliberately intended to provoke outrage – don’t you think?
CyberCipher on April 11, 2007 at 1:02 PM
BTW, while everyone is focused on Imus’s comment’s regarding the Rutgers girl’s basketball team (who ONLY made it to the NCAA championship game, but did not win), do you suppose that I could get in a lot of trouble for going “on the air” and calling the winners of the NIT’s women’s basketball tournament a bunch of “cowgirls.” Maybe AllahPundit would be willing to impose a two week suspension from HotAir on me. I could use the notoriety.
CyberCipher on April 11, 2007 at 1:35 PM
What’s ironic about Michelle’s column is that as bad as the quoted lyrics are, they are far from being the dirtiest, nastiest, and/or most mysoginist you’ll hear in rap. She could have quoted much worse if she wanted to, but then the column wouldn’t have been printable at all.
And related to this, she’s got some company.
thirteen28 on April 11, 2007 at 1:40 PM
Jason Whitlock also check in.
thirteen28 on April 11, 2007 at 1:47 PM
Way to go with this column, Michelle. Somebody needed to come out and say these things, and I’m glad you did. Not only is this stuff really awful music, it’s just really awful, period.
flutejpl on April 11, 2007 at 2:23 PM
You are guilty. It is a sin nowadays to mention the word that you want to say. Ann Coulter did the same. You guys crucified her.
BTW, those are mild lyrics. There are some that might make you turn your back to check if someone watching you.

I wonder how many of those “scarred for life” have the same crap on their ipods?

I found it quite funny that a few wish to paint Imus as a conservative. Cluelessness[?] at its best.
The anti-Malkin crowd cannot be too happy about this as it could continue. Maybe.
DannoJyd on April 11, 2007 at 5:37 PM
Yes, I admit got the WNIT reference. Congrats to Wyoming.
MattSkosh on April 11, 2007 at 9:31 PM
Michelle is great, actually I’ve been more impressed by her in the last 6 mo. than prior.
However, it’s a sad that her column didn’t include or could not include the true state of rap lyrics… When Kelis’ song Milkshake came out she had to make efforts to redefine the word from the original vernacular …
Enough said…
Low standards create the lowly… so sad but true…
