But since it’s Don Imus, Rosie and her gang give him a free pass and cry “first ammendment!”, even though this doesn’t even qualify as a first ammendment issue.

What is not protected by the constitution is freedom from the consequences of our speech.

If I use inappropriate language and personal attacks in messages on this blog, I know what the consequences will be. Imus should be equally aware of the consequences of his own acts.

Being stupid is not a crime.
Imus is rude and stupid.
He may get fired for that, but he’s not necessarily a criminal (at least, for that anyways). I possess some expertise in the areas of rude and stupid as well (as other posters will attest).

Since Imus’ speech is within the contexts of his job function, wouldn’t any “free speech” arguments be subject to Garcetti v. Ceballos?

Broadcasters, in particular, are usually subject to a higher corporate speech standard than us joes on the street corner (Exhibit A, Exhibit B).

Ro-Ro’s weak posturing as a free-speech advocate is disingenuous at best. I didn’t see her rushing to AC’s defense after dropping the gay F-bomb at CPAC, or having MM’s back when someone hates on her. She fails to grasp the true beauty of free speech, which is hidden within the principle of personal responsibility and free markets.

That said, bringing Al Sharpton in as spokesman for race relations has transformed this episode from tragedy to farce.

Only Govt can restrict our speech. TV has decency restrictions. But cable channels have only one censor: the viewer. Irregardless if he is a racist in is heat, he enjoys using racist, anti-semetic, sexist jokes for his humor. That’s his Schtick! (a yiddish word for what you do).

Listeneres should stop listening, advertisers should stop advertising when the rating go down, the show is cancelled.

Those of you familiar with Godwin’s Law can pass go and scroll all the way to the bottom to the final sentence.

Apparently Rosie has never held an honest job. I can assure you corporate America can (and does)censor speech on the job. Saying the wrong thing can and will lead to disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment. Ever see that in your employee handbook? I’m sure most of us have. All in the name of being equal opportunity employers who protect their employees from harrassing remarks which promote a hostile work environment (realizes he’s worked for the man way too long). Anyway, most corporations are going the way of total political correctness. I digress.

As much as anything parity is at issue here.

The moral standard for free speech sensitivity is set by society as a whole, which as a whole our PC index is far past detrimental.

So far as bias goes liberal prejudice is encouraged and Conservative exposure of that prejudice is shunned.

Accountable parity is why Imus and Rosie et al need to come in line with the same acceptability as the rest of us and free speech standards for our society (in it’s entirety) need to be changed to something much more tolerant, much more blameless and intent accepting.

She’s simply not confrontational enough to counter a heavyweight (pun intended) like Rosie…and for her job, won’t backsass Baba Wawa…

Of course, Ann Coulter sittin’ next to Unstable Mabel would kick in the ratings…I’d have to start TIVO-ing the show daily!

In the case of Campanis, given his history, I think it was really unfair that he got fired. What he said to get fired wasn’t hateful, it was just poorly phrased.

The sad thing about the Imus situation is that someone like Steve Harvey could say the same thing on his radio show, and nobody would even notice.
