Video: Imus calls out Sharpton’s lie on “Today”

While debating with the Rev. Al Sharpton on this morning’s “Today” show, talk show host Don Imus called Sharpton out. According to Imus, the Rev agreed that he would appear on Imus’ show only if Imus appeared on his show. Imus did go on Sharpton’s show yesterday, where he grovelled and scraped to get out of his Rutgers jam, but Sharpton has broken his promise and now refuses to go on Imus’ show. The Reverend’s word is, apparently, worthless.
Below is what ensued:

Amazingly, it seems the media and self-acclaimed champions of social justice like Al Sharpton just discovered Don Imus’ hateful rants. In January 2005, Imus referred to the publishers of the Mary and Carol Higgins Clark holiday thriller “The Christmas Thief” as “Theiving Jews” and made matters worse when, according to a New York Post article, reportedly stated “I apologize … I realize that’s redundant.” Imus should have been unplugged long ago.
BrunoMitchell on April 10, 2007 at 12:42 PM
Uh, Ian … where have you been for the past 15 years or so?
Ali-Bubba on April 10, 2007 at 12:43 PM
Boy, Imus looks old and sounds confused.
Clark1 on April 10, 2007 at 12:51 PM
Both these bozos need to disappear. Rev. Sharpton is nothing more then a scam artist who happens to be black. Imus is a recovering addict (I congradulate him for that) whose boorish behavior is long overdue for review. As tired as it sound if these gentlemen were republican….
jimwesty on April 10, 2007 at 12:53 PM
Huh, did Imus call him Rev. Harkus?
That’s not a complement…I’m pretty sure it’s a reference to an old Imus character that was a slam on Rev. Dr. Al Bigbutt, Esq.
LOL
benrand on April 10, 2007 at 12:55 PM
Heh. Actually, I wrote that line in, just to emphasize that here’s a Reverend whose word isn’t worth the pixels it’s printed in. It’s way too easy to be a Reverend, if Al is one in good standing.

Hilts on April 10, 2007 at 12:58 PM
I think there’s some confusion. Imus asked Sharpton to come on the Imus show and Sharpton declined. Sharpton said if Imus wanted to talk it would have to be on the Sharpton show. I haven’t heard about any quid pro quo. I think the “he didn’t keep his word” refers to Sharpton’s word to be fair which Imus thinks he wasn’t. If you watch the clip where Imus says “you people” you’ll hear Imus claim Sharpton is breaking his promise to be fair.
TheBigOldDog on April 10, 2007 at 12:58 PM
Boy South Park is always ahead of their time. Just a few weeks ago they did a show on how you have to go speak to Jesse Jackson(or Al Sharpton in this case) and kiss ass if you ever say anything perceived as racist, and then suddenly all is okay.
I have to agree with Don Imus for once. I think people should say what they mean, and mean what they say. He did nothing worse than any other talk show host, but now suddenly Al Sharpton is the voice of reason? This man(Sharpton) has so much blood on his hands, he looks like a butcher. He ruined multiple lives through his hate speech(against whites, jews, etc.).
It’s very tiring.
I submit this South Park evidence:
(content warning for n-word)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=2ejedL3LII8
If this can be shown without anyone getting upset, what is so bad about Don Imus’ words?
Vincenzo on April 10, 2007 at 1:03 PM
What’s ironic is that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have the audacity to call anyone else out on racist/sexist/anti-semitic rants. Another case of absolute moral authority.
foxforce91 on April 10, 2007 at 1:05 PM
that episode is great. it also goes on to show how stupid the “reverse racism” cannard is.
jummy on April 10, 2007 at 1:12 PM
Time for Imus to bring back Rev Billy Sol Hargis,
Imus is getting shafted by the same people he
has on his show and give a platform to spew
thier liberal garbage.
Tough lesson Imus. . . .

Red on red verbal violence, two dipsh*t libs … it’s like watching the taliban fight with al qaeda.
“nappy headed hos” – What a dumbass. If you’re gonna say something that stupid, at least make it funny so that it’s worth all the bad press. I never did like this moron, but he does have the freedom of speech. We can’t defend one radio guy for calling a terrorist … well, a ‘terrorist’ and then not defend this douchbag’s freedom of speech too. As wrong as he was to say it, he does have that right, there’s no law against being stupid. And all this bad press will just lead to higher ratings for Imus, people seem to love this kinda stuff.

Isnt this feigned outrage going on just a little bit too long? I mean really folks when the kettle and pot met yesterday wasnt that sufficient? Now were adding that putz Lauer into the mix..
Viper1 on April 10, 2007 at 1:18 PM
Don Imus has far more moral authority than either Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. I agree with most, Imus is a jerk, but he doesn’t hide from who he is. Jesse and Al are race “hos”.
bopbottle on April 10, 2007 at 1:20 PM
I think Imus should make a rap song out of this…then he’d have an excuse.
James on April 10, 2007 at 1:21 PM
Ian, do you have the clip from that same show where Meredith Viera called out Rev. Jackson on his “Hymie-Town” statements? I think it’s worth posting if you can find it.

Th slander of Steven Pagones in the Brawley case is far worse than off-handed stupidity by Imus.
Interestingly in 1997, Brawley changed her name to Maryam Muhammad.
There is still an outstanding warrant in New York against Brawley and her mother for ignoring her own grand jury subpoena.
She also owes Pagones damages of $185,000 because she did not show up at that trial, either.
Valiant on April 10, 2007 at 1:35 PM
James, I was just thinking this. Rappers have been calling women “ho’s” for years and not a peep out of Sharpton or Jackson.
moonsbreath on April 10, 2007 at 1:38 PM
there’s a big difference between, for instance, a black commedian calling a black heckler a “nappy headed ho” and what imus did, which was for a white guy to reach into the grab-bag of misunderstood black slang and come out randomly with something as a way of noting that one team was predominately black while the other was predominantly white.
so imus was very wrong. BUT…
what imus did in making an offensive and racist wisecrack was different still from what al sharpton has done repeatedly by making serious and deliberately provacative racist statements which have actually gotten people killed and buildings burnt to the ground.
jummy on April 10, 2007 at 1:40 PM
I’d like Bill Cosby’s opinion on all of this. Sure, he may hate white people, but at least he actually truly cares about blacks. I’ll take my moral cues on racism from Mr. Cosby. As for Sharpton, Jesse “blood on my shirt” Jackson, Don “has and never was been” Imus, and the rest of the media elite: they can all go jump in an f’in river.
Vincenzo on April 10, 2007 at 1:41 PM
not quite. the issue with what imus said isn’t that he said “ho” but that he said “nappy-headed” and also that saying that was by way of makking the ignorant formulation that the black team was axiomaticly “tough” and bestial because it was black.
and yes, it is different when a black person says the “n” word than when a white person says it.
jummy on April 10, 2007 at 1:45 PM
Imus said something stupid (and it sounds like he may have a bad history of that). But it is clear that he was not trying to be racist if you look at context. Sharpton, on the other hand, seems to have no problem with being a racist and knows that he can get away with it because he is black and thus cannot be a racist on their terms.
And what is up with this “you people” thing? This is the big problem with political correctness. Anything can be misconstrued to mean something else now.
This whole thing is just stupid.
CR UVa on April 10, 2007 at 1:45 PM
i agree that “you people” being defined as inherantly racist is a bridge past a bridge too far in terms of political correctness.
jummy on April 10, 2007 at 1:47 PM
Well obviously people calling their own names is less offensive than other people doing the same thing. Nonetheless, there is way too much tolerance among the black community for this kind of stuff–very misogynisic, very gangster in music, not at all the same thing as Chris Rock or Richard Pryor IMO.

PRCalDude on April 10, 2007 at 1:50 PM
The black leadership is so blind to their own sins that they can’t even see their political power being swept away by the invasion from the southern border. Neither are they paying any attention to the race war this invasion is fomenting. They’re the blindest guides I’ve ever seen.

What’s always been interesting to me is the term “you people,” because in the Northeast (where I’m from), that was never considered a “loaded” phrase, like it has been in the South. Maybe now “you people” is verboten even in the Northeast, but from a semantic, and not political perspective, I always found that to be interesting.

It was funny when, on the Today show this morning, Jesse Jackson brought up the subject of how many black basketball players were present during the NCAA tournament. It got me to thinking about it.
White players clearly are under-represented in NCAA basketball, and the same for the NFL and NBA.
Where’s the diversity?
Why is diversity strictly a one way issue?

PRCalDude on April 10, 2007 at 2:03 PM
Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised if Imus is racist, or meant to make fun of blacks with his comment, or whatever.
Is anyone surprised? And furthermore, if we allow one segment(comedians, women, blacks, whatever) to make racist, religious, sexist comments and not be “outraged,” what right do we have to get “outraged” at Mr. Imus.
The whole thing is so mind-numbing I really don’t care what anyone says anymore. I’ll teach my daughter to be good to everyone, and stand behind everything she says.

Multiculturalism is about denigrating the host culture. The society leftists want to create would look something like al-Andalus under Muslim, rule with sealed-off communtities living under different laws. It’s the opposite of some of the principles the US was founded on i.e. a shared culture, national unity, all men are created equal.

I have family in the northeast and they ask us all the time, “when do you people want to eat…what time do you people want to go… etc.” At first, I was taken back, (this is family through marriage) but soon realized that it was not intended to be loaded or rude. Ain’t it grand when Liberals go for each other’s throats?
Hening on April 10, 2007 at 3:09 PM
Let Don Imus speak. Clearly he was joking and it fell flat. Does anyone here really think that he uses the word “ho” in his day-to-day vernacular? He tried to talk ghetto and made a fool out of himself in the process. I wouldn’t have said what he said, but being over-the-top is his m-o. If Stern had said the same thing, nobody would say a word about it. If Chris Rock or Sinbad, or another black comedian had said it, nobody would even blink.
And why? Because they don’t sound like irrelevant old geezers when they say it.
Imus was a fool, no doubt. But the piling on is excessive. At least he was a good enough man to take his licks in a hostile environment. He didn’t run off to some rehab. I actually gained some respect for the man for doing that. His politics suck, and he made an ass out of himself, but Imus has some brass ones.

Imus is a pompous ass. Each time I hear him whining about being a “good person” I hear him spouting a demeaning comment about someone being stupid, being a liar, or something similar. Good people don’t constantly berate others on a national stage as he does. His ego is superceded only by his self-righteousness.
This time his mouth got the better of him, stepping on a landmine in the field of political correctness.
His statement was offensive, but he is offensive nearly all the time. As has been noted, he has been racially insensitive in the past, but his insensitivity is hardly limited to race. And he seems to get worse with the passing years.
It gets so one wants to knock that stupid cowboy hat off his head.

IMO, If there were any reason for argument, Imus should NOT have bowed, and made himself available to Al charlatan. Any complaints should have come from the aggrieved party only, and not from second hand, third, fourth and fifth sucker punchers or from the likes of Sharpton and Jesse (shake down) Jackson. Moreover, I agree with Howard Sterns advice to Imus (won’t repeat that here).

Why do people always cry ‘freedom of speech’ when someone is facing consequences for saying something stupid? The first amendment gives you the right to speak your mind, it doesn’t give you the right to be heard. Why can so few people tell the difference nowadays?

So Imus said something “offensive.” BFD. No one was watching anyway. He probably manufactured the whole “controversy” for attention, and to push legitimate news stories to the back pages. See Michelle’s “10 things more newsworthy than Don Imus“, and her rundown of the current Billboard Hot Rap Tracks. Good stuff there.
