Rapes in South Africa set to decline precipitously

Via Ace, sisters are doing it for themselves. It’s the sexual equivalent of a spring gun — incredibly effective against unwanted intruders, but if you forget to disable it when you’re “having a guest over,” oh boy.

One of the questions in the FAQ is “Won’t the rapist kill me?” Their answer: maybe.

I need to redeem this stupid post with a newsy link that’s vaguely thematically similar, so here you go. Better deterrence of violent criminals through technology!

Update: Commenters are wondering — once intruders realize they can’t come in through the front door, won’t they simply look for another entrance?

I’m hoping this is a Urban African Legend?

Drtuddle on April 10, 2007 at 4:40 PM

That sound you hear?

Every guy who reads this site just crossed his legs.

Every guy who reads this site just crossed his legs.

Slublog on April 10, 2007 at 4:41 PM

And most would prefer to be shot.

I’m hoping this is a Urban African Legend?

Drtuddle on April 10, 2007 at 4:40 PM

I hope not, that’s awesome!

tikvah on April 10, 2007 at 4:44 PM

Exacctly, PRCalDude, which is why it’s safe to use. Rather than killing you, Mr. About-to-spend-the-rest-of-his-short-ass-life-in-agonizing-pain would-be rapist hands you his weapon and begs you to kill him.

see-dubya on April 10, 2007 at 4:45 PM

…and somewhere in the darkest reaches of the African continent Bill Clinton weeps…

phineas g. on April 10, 2007 at 4:46 PM

I wonder how they tested this product prior to release.

JayHaw Phrenzie on April 10, 2007 at 4:47 PM

I didn’t cross my legs, I donned my Kevlar and Titanium cup.

phineas g. on April 10, 2007 at 4:47 PM

I can just see it now…rapist makes her remove it. If she happens to live in a country that condemns rapists, she’ll be grilled why her device wasn’t in and the rapist will go free since it’s word against word.

Kinda like having your atm card out..if a gun is to your head, I’m sure it pretty much is a given you’d give the password to them.

Highrise on April 10, 2007 at 4:47 PM

Any cases of a rapist getting tongue a caught in that
thing. . . . Yuk ! ! I’m disgusted with myself.

Texyank on April 10, 2007 at 4:49 PM

…and somewhere in the darkest reaches of the African continent Bill Clinton weeps…

phineas g. on April 10, 2007 at 4:46 PM

No … somewhere in the darkest reaches of somewhere, a woman turns the table on Bill Clinton and says:

“You’d better put some ice on that.”

thirteen28 on April 10, 2007 at 4:50 PM

It might work….IF….it truely disables the attacker. Otherwise, the word ‘maybe’ should be bold and ALL CAPS! It’s a fair chance lead pipe cinch the sob will be more than furious!

james hooker on April 10, 2007 at 4:51 PM

I wonder how taser technology could be integrated into all of this…

Savage on April 10, 2007 at 4:52 PM

That oughta makes things easier for the cops on C.S.I. Johannesburg.

infidel4life on April 10, 2007 at 4:52 PM

mkay, guess rapist sodomy will increase..unless they come up with a buttrapex too. Good lord.

Highrise on April 10, 2007 at 4:52 PM

i’d sooner they wear chastity belts

yeeeeooouch!

Defector01 on April 10, 2007 at 4:53 PM

South Africa is full of inventive anti-crime devices. Some South African company was offering to outfit cars with flame-throwing devices to counter the car-jacking crime wave there. The simplest anti-carjacking device was to leave a bottle of whiskey laced with strychnine in the glove compartment. Simple, but effective.

Tantor on April 10, 2007 at 4:54 PM

It can stay in for up to 24 hours. And it will be “available in various sizes… small, medium and large.”

How sad. You have to predict 24 hours ahead of time if you are gonna be raped. Imagine putting this thing on every morning and saying “today i’m gonna be raped”

lorien1973 on April 10, 2007 at 4:54 PM

The FAQ’s didn’t say whether FGMers would be able to use it.

/sarc

Highrise on April 10, 2007 at 4:55 PM

AND – you have to predict the penis size of your attacker? I forgot about that. How very sad.

lorien1973 on April 10, 2007 at 4:56 PM

Nice picture.

honora on April 10, 2007 at 4:59 PM

mkay, guess rapist sodomy will increase..

That’s what I think as well. A few people may get caught by the device, but overall I think it will increase violence rather than make anyone safer. (and yes, I’m hating how defeatist that sounds even as I type it)

Quisp on April 10, 2007 at 4:59 PM

Quisp I think it’s a given that more women will be killed that are raped not to mention sodomy rapes increase. And I can only hope that women who refuse to use one won’t pay somehow if they do get raped and are asked in a trial why they weren’t wearing one. I can just see it unfold..grrrr.

Highrise on April 10, 2007 at 5:04 PM

While we’re talking tech, I’d put money behind any company developing an autonomous hovering UAV with lasers that atomizes all targets illegally crossing non-gated border areas.

It zaps anything going in or out without predjudice. Kind of a “Border Guard Gort” from Day the Earth Stood Still.

ScottMcC on April 10, 2007 at 5:05 PM

Could’nt this also be used as revenge for a cheating spouse.
Just a matter of time….

ronsfi on April 10, 2007 at 5:05 PM

…or as an instrument of revenge for a scorned lover.

Kid from Brooklyn on April 10, 2007 at 5:11 PM

Great idea…until a woman uses on an ex-boyfriend that she called over for old time’s sake.

CookeyD on April 10, 2007 at 5:14 PM

Now if it injected curare, it might be useful … provided you weren’t being gang raped.

I think a firearm is a better tool.

Kristopher on April 10, 2007 at 5:14 PM

And could that radar beam actually detonate the bomb or would that violate the suicide bomber’s civil rights?

CookeyD on April 10, 2007 at 5:15 PM

There was a lot of debate in the blogosphere in 2003, when these ads came out — most of it revolving, as you mentioned, around whether using the “product” would get you killed or not.

This is a much better design, I think. Not having the equipment to know for sure, it looks like it would have a much longer-lasting and shocking effect, so hopefully the victim would have more time to run.

Tanya on April 10, 2007 at 5:16 PM

Should help keep the UN under control as well

Allah, thanks for the nightmares. Now can we PLEASE get some Anna Nicole baby-daddy news?

Ali-Bubba on April 10, 2007 at 5:23 PM

From the headline, I thought the story was going to be about the withdrawl of UN troops back to their home countries.

austinnelly on April 10, 2007 at 5:24 PM

I saw a similar product on the history channel. They tried it like 75+ years ago but they never caught on due to being uncomfortable and the odds of it actually having its intended use was slim.

Besides, wouldnt rapests just start carrying the “applicator” and remove the damn thing themselves?

SnakeintheGrass on April 10, 2007 at 5:24 PM

Also, the thing has RAZOR BLADES in it. If your attacker has some kind of disease, I cant think of a better way to contract it yourself.

SnakeintheGrass on April 10, 2007 at 5:27 PM

Allah, thanks for the nightmares. Now can we PLEASE get some Anna Nicole baby-daddy news?

Nope. You know the news. What do you need me to post on it for?

Made by the same folks who built those “Do Not Back Up – Severe Tire Damage” devices for the old drive-in movie theaters?

Nope, they’ll issue Keilbasi Scabbards fitted on Sam Browne belts.

I simply have my wife get escorted by the 50 foot robotic Michael Jackson with laser eyes. I trust him with her and he frightens everyone else away.

robblefarian on April 10, 2007 at 5:37 PM

As of today Favorite taunting song by African women “Rape Me!” by Nirvana. What if it’s used on a man who is not raping this person? Like a weapon. She is assaulting him! I’m hoping it will just be a psychological thing than a real thing. You know a man probably wouldn’t want to take that chance. Allah, Please take that Image down! It makes me uncomfortable on the site!

ScottMcC on April 10, 2007 at 6:28 PM

I’ll tell you how to reduce rape, not in South Africa, but Africa in general… Pull the UN out! UN workers have been raping and impregnating and diseasing little girls and women in African and other third world countries for years, even stooping so low as to trade women a jar of peanut butter for sex.

I wonder if the radar device mentioned in your last paragraph could pick up one of these?

Kristopher on April 10, 2007 at 5:14 PM

Yah, but what if a firearm went off accidently in there?

JayHaw Phrenzie on April 10, 2007 at 7:11 PM

I like the idea of this “ChineseFingerPenis Trap”, and the radar thing. But, I fully expected to see a picture of a gun for these intended rape victims to carry around. It’s more effective and said victims stand a better chance of survival.

At least get to posting Allah so it will move the pic off the front page! It’s like this story on the news of the Wise County Court House here in Texas where they shut down the public restroom because they found pubic lice on the toilet seat. I’ve heard it for about the 5th time today and I’m going to turn off the TV and Radio!

Drtuddle on April 10, 2007 at 8:13 PM

If it really does resemble a female condom, then it could even be used merely for malicious blood sport. It appears the victim–by which I mean the person being injured, if one needs to have it spelled out–would injure himself further in his own frenzy and be incapacitated by the pain. Under those circumstances, it seems the attacker would have little trouble getting away safely.

Kralizec on April 10, 2007 at 8:28 PM

For some couples this looks like a potentially double edged sword issue.

Hey do these things come in colors? Like day-glo green so the cops can catch the guy trying to run away, if he’s still up for it.

Maybe they should come with an alarm like some parking lot warnings, do not back up extreme p…s damage!

This thing looks discriminatory, like magnum condom users wouldn’t get caught, so to speak.

Next out, Kevlar condoms with electronic sharp object alarm (build a better mousetrap).

Speakup on April 10, 2007 at 9:05 PM

AND – you have to predict the penis size of your attacker? I forgot about that. How very sad.

lorien1973 on April 10, 2007 at 4:56 PM

Of course not, the size depends on the woman.

tikvah on April 10, 2007 at 10:14 PM

Best to have a .38 as the assailant could claim that he was a boyfriend and the injury was for vengeance.I cant imagine using an appliance like that for preventative measures.Blech!

spazzmomma on April 10, 2007 at 10:51 PM

It can stay in for up to 24 hours. And it will be “available in various sizes… small, medium and large.”

For your pleasure, imagine the size that Nancy Pelosi would use, then imagine her lending it to Helen Thomas…….

PinkyBigglesworth on April 10, 2007 at 11:00 PM

Yah, but what if a firearm went off accidently in there?

That’s called an accidental discharge.

As for myself … if my penis could kill at 100 yards, I wouldn’t need a pistol.

Rapes are crimes of violence, not sex… but this strikes me as a weapon that is more offensive then defensive and seems likely to provoke even more savage violence.

Unlike a .38 in the purse.

I guarantee the first stories we read are going to be about abuse of the device.

DANEgerus on April 11, 2007 at 12:47 AM

Design enhancements:
Big bright letters on the outside:

“Attention medical personnel: the wearer of this device is a rapist; treat accordingly. Code # XXXXXXXXX” Code number would link back to the purchaser and she had better be alive.

Triggered dye cartridge, just in case the attacker figures ourt a way to get out of it. A bright purple penis would definitley go a long way in identification.

“Any system design can be improved, just as no system is fool-proof in the hands of a truly dedicated Foole.”

Mike O on April 11, 2007 at 12:57 AM

I wonder if this device expands and contracts depending on size. Pain generally creates the wet noodle condition and at that point wouldn’t the device simple fall off?

Somewhere there’s a grade B movie director who just got a really big idea for a horror film.

Mojave Mark on April 10, 2007 at 11:27 PM

The opposite idea was done in the movie “7″.
