Go-to guy to apologize for making racist comments. What a world. Don Imus may well be and probably is a bigot, but Rev. Al Sharpton is worse no matter how you look at the situation. But now he gets to be Imus’ judge and jury. What a world.
Here’s Imus submitting to Sharpton on the latter’s nationally syndicated radio show today. It’s cringe-inducing on so many levels it’s hard to know where to start. Well, other than to note that neither of these guys deserves the prominence they both enjoy.
(thanks to Ian for finding the clip)
Update (AP): OlbyWatch has audio of Keith admitting that he’s not being tougher on Imus because they share an employer — coupled with archived audio of Keith tearing O’Reilly a new one for not being tougher on Fox’s book division for the O.J. debacle because they share an employer.
Here’s a link to the audio if you don’t want to actually watch the spectacle.
Update: MSNBC is reporting that “NBC News” has suspended the morning simulcast of Imus’s radio show for two weeks. A tipster sent me the statement from NBC. Money quote: “In addition, his dedication - in his words - to change the discourse on his program moving forward, has confirmed for us that this action is appropriate. Our future relationship with Imus is contingent on his ability to live up to his word.” I.e., he’s on double-secret probation.
They’re going to air his charity radiothon as scheduled on Thursday and Friday.

Finally! A post about Imus. Sure, I hate the guy, his hat, and the harping about the ranch. That he looks like a vampire is just icing on the cake.
I can’t believe I’m defending this asshat, but c’mon with this whole controversy. In a world where the Ward Churchills continue to spew their venom, it’s hard to justify firing Imus over these comments. And to have to bow and scrape with the likes of Sharpton and the other race baiters, well, that’s just too much. I hope he keeps his job just to peeve these guys off.
jaleach on April 9, 2007 at 4:27 PM
where would you even begin to start with this?
Viper1 on April 9, 2007 at 4:29 PM
Yeah, he’s a racist… but to bend over for Sharpton like he did? “Please Mr. Reverend sir, please don’t be mad at me”.
Leave him alone; he’s a lib, he was just trying to make a joke, it’s *not his fault*.
dalewalt on April 9, 2007 at 4:31 PM
This is one of the sickest displays I’ve ever seen. I don’t know who to despise more. Well, yeah I do: Sharpton, though Imus clearly deserves no respect. It reminds me of when I was called into the prick vice-principal’s office in junior high just to be reminded of who’s in charge.
Drum on April 9, 2007 at 4:32 PM
Why doesn’t Imus just go ahead and get down on the floor and wash then kiss “Reverend” Sharptons feet?
He’s obviously “Holier than thou”.
Parley on April 9, 2007 at 4:33 PM
Strange…what’s next, Sharpton asking for Senator Robert Byrd’s resignation?
Rick on April 9, 2007 at 4:42 PM
Hell no. Byrd did his penance years ago and the Church of Liberal Hypocrisy has had his soul ever since.
Drum on April 9, 2007 at 4:47 PM
Can’t view vid at work but heard some of this on Sharpton radio. One caller, coming to Imus’s defense, pointed out he’d said Dick Cheney should be convicted of war crimes and intimated this meant he’s an okay guy. Imus himself referred to a “racist” Reagan adminstration. Another caller (or was it Sharpton?) called him “progressive” and “liberal” — to the effect these things are evidence he’s a good guy, etc. And from the getgo Imus had his Hill Clinton “you know what I’m talkin’ ’bout’” black voice on.
Barf.

I used to be an Imus fan; don’t care for him any longer, but that is what his show is. He slams every group and if people don’t like it, don’t listen. I think he should have called Sharpton a “ho”. That is exactly what he is.

I am not a big listener of the Al Sharpton radio show, but did I somehow miss him calling one of any number of various rappers on the carpet to account for their astonishing portrayals of black women as sluts, whores, and drug addicts?
As for the worthless Imus, I actually thought he held up pretty well, all things considered (those things being his pathetic media persona with cowboy hat, deathly appearance, and horrific prone position before the sickening Sharpton).

The whole situation equates to no more than some face time for the “Sharkton”. He’s been a little underexposed for a while and Imus gave him the perfect opportunity to get in our face. It’s beginning to take on a whole I’m-rubber-you’re-glue feeling.
I wish they’d both go find a rock to crawl under.

Imus has been doing the same thing for as long as I can remember. Between letting you know how much he has given to charity (every day) he has been making fun of “queers, ‘lezzies’, black folks, and various other groups of people. He has been brutal with his sportscaster about his weight (fatso, fat bastard, etc.) To Imus this is suposed to be funny. It’s not funny - it’s cruel. I don’t remember him calling Tim Russert a fat bastard.
I personally don’t like Imus and as I have stated on these pages before I think he is a total Ahole.
So why suddenly are they going after him? Where was MSNBC when he was calling our President, Vice President and Donald Rumsfield war criminals who should be executed? Why didn’t they suspend him then? I don’t think that was funny. Of course we all know why MSNBC didn’t do anything about that don’t we.

Imus has been Dhimmified, and will pay a two-week Jizah.

Imus made a huge mistake, not but what he said, which was inappropriate, but by the fact that he is letting the ‘gang of two’, Jackson and Sharpton. escalate it to the point of absurdity.
He should have apologized to the women, left it there, and made no further comments.
BUT N-O-O-O-O! He fell into the ‘team’ Jackson/Sharpton ‘demand rap’, which is the hallmark of their existence, and is now doing everything, but rewriting Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, to get away from their tentacles.

You didn’t realize that when you Rev Sharpton you can walk on water and pick and choose the doctrine you follow?
He’s not a hypocrite, he’s just selective about the gospels he teaches.
After all… he has Unquestionable Moral Authority, as he is descended from slave who was once owned by a south Carolina congressman…

Imus is an idiot for going on Shaprton’s show. He deserved the ridicule for kowtowing to this bigot. That said, as a liberal he had no choice. He had to genuflect before the high priests of liberal racial authority.
I just hate to see conservatives jump on the PC bandwagon when the the victim, Imus, happens to be someone they dislike. It doesn’t hurt that MSNBC is catching shrapnel from this, either.

Since when did Tawana Sharpton become the judge of anyone? He has the blood of at least nine people on his hands and, for the life of me I can’t understand why this moron is still able to walk the streets and how he has become a vocal leader in this country.
The man is human filth and he puts on a show like he did yesterday. That was a circus.
I’m not defending Imus but he’s been doing the same schitck for around 30 years, someone finally woke up to it but Al needs to be taken to task for his remarks.
I wouldn’t be suprised if Imus retires at the end of 2008.
madmonaco on April 10, 2007 at 8:23 AM
Imus’ big sin (IMO and I’m a fan) is he wallows in self indulgence and self pity. This particular statement was bad, no question about it. (The sad thing is that these Rutgers girls are having their great season and accomplishments eclipsed by this circus). And he needs to apologize; the suspension is appropriate punishment.
What irks me is he can’t leave well enough alone. He says he isn’t making excuses for himself but then goes on to list the laundry list of his many laudable works. Well, Don, let someone else do that, more effective, less unctuous.
What cracks me up about this is the reaction of the Fox News gang: they want to rip Imus/MSNBC but they don’t want to side with Sharpton and Jackson. Oh what to do, what to do….
honora on April 10, 2007 at 8:37 AM
Whose blood? Details and source please.
Bradky on April 10, 2007 at 8:47 AM
Don Imus makes fun of every group and every politician. He should have said he was sorry if they were offended and then gotten on with making fun of others.
His groveling in order to keep his job is painful. When the coach complained about how the Rutgers players’ “dignity of human beings” was hurt, he should have turned it right back on them asking how a word could hurt their human dignity more than the women tattooing their bodies all over. Sometimes shame works wonders.
Don Imus has always been a liberal and his first response is to apologize and beg forgiveness.
januarius on April 10, 2007 at 8:47 AM
That’s his entire show this morning, with every guest doing it along with him. CBS’ Jeff Greenfield is currently polishing the Imus idol.
There’s nothing wrong there. I fail to see the logic in atoning for racist commentary by apologizing to a racist. That’s like murdering and snacking on your gay lover, then apologizing to Jeff Dahmer (may he rest in pieces). That said, Sharpton gets more face time on Fox than any other network, and Jackson was on with John Gibson yesterday.
Being black doesn’t imbue Absolute Moral Authority%trade; to racists, no matter how much play they get.
Where’s the South park clip of Randy Marsh apologizing to Jackson?
Pablo on April 10, 2007 at 8:52 AM
So let me get this straight. Now Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson decide who is offensive and what they can say on the air.
Political Correctness is out of control. Welcome to the brave new world where race hustlers decide who can say what.
Imus should have refused to apologized and GE is an embarrassment that caved to a race hustler and thug.
Freedom of speech is under attack in America-IMHO
ScottyDog on April 10, 2007 at 9:17 AM
I can’t remember the last time I bothered to look in on Imus and found him sans cowboy hat. Yup pardners, a whole new, cleaner Imus is on the air now. I’m surprised he didn’t show up with a do-rag just to prove how sorry he was for the nappy-ho guffaw and to demonstrate he was down with the bruthas.
All of his left wing pals are lining up to minimally reprimand him for his “mistake”, then spend most of their time talking about what a great guy he really is. I call BS on the lot of them.
Rush was fired from ESPN for making far less controversial remarks. George Allen was driven from office for one of-color comment that was never meant for media consumption. The MSM was relentless in it’s attacks on Allen. Imus, the bitter bigot at MSNBC, lays a giant egg while broadcasting live from his studio and he gets a 2 week suspension.
Where’s the MSM’s 24/7 condemnation of Imus?
Blatant hypocrisy.
fogw on April 10, 2007 at 9:21 AM
Sharpton and Jackson are blackula vampire bats whose coffers were running dry and needed to sink their teeth into the pulsing jugular of the blacks whom are incapable of living a centered life unless they are feeling victimized by the white power structure. Those two are the most disengenuos, fake, and opportunist scumbags on the face of the earth. They feed on their own and are the reason why all blacks should be conservative.
Look for them to be sporting new cars and suits in the very new future.
csdeven on April 10, 2007 at 9:30 AM
Sentiments like these are part of the reason the black community has such distrust of Republicans. Leave one party who takes you for granted and join another party who sees you as a voting bloc, nothing more.
Bradky on April 10, 2007 at 9:35 AM
Where to you get that from what I said?
csdeven on April 10, 2007 at 10:02 AM
Agree re Rush. Allen is a whole other thing–he was running for office. And he lied about the whole thing–macaca is a racial slur where his mother grew up; he uses the word and then claims he never heard it before, just make it up on the spot? Right. That and the noose in the office? Sorry George. None of which excuses Imus but the comparison is not apt IMO.
honora on April 10, 2007 at 10:05 AM
“…reason why all blacks should be conservative.”
Note the key words “all” and “conservative”
Bradky on April 10, 2007 at 10:05 AM
Let me get this straight…you think the Republicans look at blacks as a voting bloc? That is the mentality csdeven is talking about, a victim. They distrust the Republicans because they are told to. For over 150 years the Republicans were the defender of free blacks, the Republicans fought and died to free the slaves, not the democrats. Organizations like the KKK are born from the Democrat party, embraced by them, it was part of their southern platform. Only in the late 1950’s when the unions promised so much too the blacks (and then gave them nothing), and the democrats promised so much (and gave them welfare and horrendous schooling), and even then it took the republicans to pass the great civil rights laws…against people like Gore and others who defended the right to suppress blacks.
The Republicans are guilty of taking for granted that the blacks can stand on their own, think on their own, and raise families on their own. The Republicans are guilty for pointing out the hyprocisy of the left, for keeping the blacks enslaved, poor, and worse than that continue giving them substandard education.
Remove the plantation mentality of the left, the obnoxious patronizing of the left to their “poor” blacks, and you will see a great movement of intellect and prosperity emerge from the enslavement to a party that neglects, abuses, ridicules, and under estimates their abilities.
I am guilty of thinking blacks deserve better.
right2bright on April 10, 2007 at 10:05 AM
No you are guilty of thinking you know better than blacks do how blacks should behave politically. Talk about plantation mentality.

csdeven on April 10, 2007 at 10:22 AM
You made sweeping generalizations in your comment and I pointed them out. When you worry more about your fellow man without making their political loyalty a condition of your assistance, you will get it.
Bradky on April 10, 2007 at 10:28 AM
No, try to follow this: I am making the point that black people are in the best position to judge which political party is the one that best aligns with their interests. (Which is how everyone chooses their political allegiance). If you want to suggest they are making the wrong choice, fine. Your stereotype is telling though IMO.
honora on April 10, 2007 at 10:41 AM
Wrong. You have to defend your assumptions.
By your statement, you think all conservatives vote which party? I know of no “conservative” party. I know of the democrat, republican, libertarian, and green parties.
And just further expose your fallacious thinking, I never made this a political party affiliation issue. You did.
I’d give you a break on the apology you owe me, but your wild assumptions are so evident, I’d be giving your silly remarks a credibilty they don’t deserve. I have a responsibility to others on Hot Air (who may be new to conservatism) to challenge all PC pressure that tries to silence true conservative ideals.
