Australia “most Islamophobic”
posted at 2:20 pm on April 9, 2007 by Bryan
Is Australia a continent of Islamophobes?
FIREBRAND Muslim convert Yvonne Ridley says Australians are among the worst Islamophobes in the world.
The controversial British Muslim, who considers the architect of the Beslan school massacre to be a martyr, believes Australia’s attitudes to Islam are sliding faster than any other country.
“I’m deeply shocked,” she said. “It’s not what it was when I was last here three years ago.”
Hm. Supposing that she isn’t just mau mauing a whole country for fun and profit, why would Australians be more hostile to Islam today than three years ago? What could possibly cause such a poor attitude to take root Down Under?
It can’t be this, from last October:
A Muslim cleric’s claim that women who do not wear the veil are like ‘uncovered meat’ who attract sexual predators sparked outrage around Australia yesterday.
Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali, the nation’s most senior Muslim cleric, compared immodestly-dressed women who do not wear the Islamic headdress with meat that is left uncovered in the street and is then eaten by cats.
It can’t be Hilali’s apologism for Muslim rapists that accompanied the “uncovered meat” comment. Can’t be.
It can’t be this, from December 2005, either:
In Australia this week amidst anger over an Islamic man’s rape conviction and the bashing of two Aussie life savers, working-class locals erupted in a rampage of anger and brawling in some of the worst racial riots in decades. But there is more to the story than is being repeated in the American mainstream media….
Four days after he set foot in Australia, the rape spree began. And during his sexual assault trial in a New South Wales courtroom, the Pakistani man began to berate one of his tearful 14-year-old victims because she had the temerity to shake her head at his testimony.
But she had every reason to express her disgust. After taking an oath on the Qur’an, the man – known only as MSK – told the court he had committed four attacks on girls as young as 13 because they had no right to say “no.” They were not covering their face or wearing a headscarf, and therefore, the rapist proclaimed: “I’m not doing anything wrong.”
Wherever it’s coming from, its existence gives Ms. Ridley something to do.
Ms Ridley will speak about Islamophobia today at an Easter weekend Muslim conference at Melbourne University.
And she can’t be a reason for increasing Islamophobia.
Politicians later called for the ejection of Ms Ridley, who has discouraged British Muslims from co-operating with anti-terrorism police. She also refers to suicide bombings as “martyrdom operations”.
Her friends certainly can’t be sources of Islamophobia.
The Immigration Department this week refused to issue a visa to radical Muslim academic Dr Bilal Philips on character grounds.
He has been linked to the 1993 World Trade Centre bombings and has described US-led western culture as an enemy of Islam.
Nah, it can’t be any of that. Australia’s new and rising Islamophobia must be emerging ex nihilo. It certainly can’t be explained by anyone’s actions or statements.

Is it really a phobia if they are out to get us?
James on April 9, 2007 at 2:35 PM
Hmm, they should know better down under – you shouldn’t be intolerant of the intolerant, as that makes you a bigot.
Rick on April 9, 2007 at 2:37 PM
The word Islamophobic is like Homophobic.
“Dude stop rubbing up against me already.” “Oh you’re just Homophobic.”
“Stop blowing up my busses.” “Oh you’re just Islamophobic.”

It’s just one more of those puzzling questions that we may never have an answer for.
billy on April 9, 2007 at 2:42 PM
Exactly.
It’s not that racism doesn’t exist. Or that it’s not a bad thing.
But somewhere there HAS to be a distinction between actual bigotry against Muslims … and a common sense realization that there are millions of Muslims who want us to die.
It’s just reality. It may not be warm and fuzzy, but the World Trade Center wasn’t brought down by my phobia.
I suspect Australia has earned this honor because they have a singular tendency to approach issues with a little common sense.
And, of course, they’re closer geographically to some real hotspots of Islamic fanaticism.
Liberals have to begin to understand this point: there really are millions of lunatic Muslims, they really are hoping to kill you and me … and acknowledging that fact – and figuring out how to deal with it – is not racism or bigotry or a “phobia.”
Professor Blather on April 9, 2007 at 2:42 PM
That’s it. I’m moving to Australia.
The fact that they have supported us 100% in the Global War on Terror ALONE is enough. This is just icing on the anti-terror cake.

I’ve had some great conversations with my liberal friends who think I’ve become most Islamophobic. I just tell them that when a certain group of people call me and my loved ones infidels, repeatedly call for the death of any infidels and demonstrate the capacity and desire to bring about said deaths, I pay attention.
If I’m in a dark alley, someone pulls a knife on me, tells me they are going to kill me, I don’t laugh it off, tell them I know they’re kidding because they’re not really like that and try to move on like it didn’t happen. That’s how dead non-Islamophobes get made.
Canadian Infidel on April 9, 2007 at 3:01 PM
Maybe I’m wrong, but (I’d just love to hear a lib start out an opinion that way!) I don’t see Islam as a true religion, but as a cult of hatred, murder, and oppression. Just because it is big and powerful doesn’t make it less of a cult.
I was under the impression that a religion is a faith system that explains how we are to live together in harmony, not to murder and conquer one another. Or is it just me?
stonemeister on April 9, 2007 at 3:08 PM
We’ve really gotta try harder.
Good.
amerpundit on April 9, 2007 at 3:12 PM
That’s it. I’m going on a world tour to speak out against Occidentophobia, or Ameriphobia, Austraphobia… some kind of phobia is what I’m getting at. Because when the Muslims hear about any of these conditions, these phobias, I’m sure that they’ll start to feel really bad about what they’ve been up to, and… and then they’ll change their ways.
And while I’m wishing, I want a moon pony.

I agree. I hope that picture on the front page wasn’t taken in Australia. Otherwise Din al-Hilali might have to come in and do a serious cat smackdown on that hussy.

The Aussies have it right! I have one friend living in Queensland who was mortified over Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali and the comments he made about women being “uncovered meat.” As my Aussie friend says, “good on” the government in not issuing this visa.

Lonevoice on April 9, 2007 at 3:52 PM
Wait! You mean the Aussies are not burying their heads in the sand and denying that one specific religion’s followers are actively trying to convert or kill all non-believers or cowering at the first cry of discrimination? Maybe there is hope after all.

Being Islamophobic is a good thing. It’s your instinct telling you there’s danger and you need to beware and be cautious and attentive. On the other hand, islams extreme phobia of all things non-muslim is something Ms Ridley can explain for us.
Islam in general suffers from Westernophobia.

Wikipedia’s entry on “Islamophobia” lists 8 defining characteristics:
1) Islam is seen as a monolithic bloc, static and unresponsive to change.
2) It is seen as separate and “other”. It does not have values in common with other cultures, is not affected by them and does not influence them.
3) It is seen as inferior to the West. It is seen as barbaric, irrational, primitive, and sexist.
4) It is seen as violent, aggressive, threatening, supportive of terrorism, and engaged in a clash of civilizations.
5) It is seen as a political ideology, used for political or military advantage.
6) Criticisms made of “the West” by Islam are rejected out of hand.
7) Hostility towards Islam is used to justify discriminatory practices towards Muslims and exclusion of Muslims from mainstream society.
8) Anti-Muslim hostility is seen as natural and normal
You might find it fascinating that amongst these characteristics is no mention whatsoever of “irrational fear,” which is the defining characteristic of any real phobia. And considering that items 4) and 5), if not others, are not only unequivocally true but readily apparent to anybody even brushingly familiar with Islam, it’s pretty clear that “Islamophobia” is a carefully constructed bit of Newspeak intended to be applicable to any and all non-Muslims who say anything even remotely critical of (and accurate about) Islam.

Why should anyone fear those who want to convert, kill, or enslave you?

ahhh the islam hate threads…
let’s try a thought exercise.
if Islam is naturally violent, aggressive, incompatible with the west etc…why aren’t the millions of muslims in America actively engaged in terrorism against us…?

The Muslim guys also have a habit of harassing Australian women in the crudest way. Apparently, every Aussie woman in the Muslim area has a scary story of being followed by a car full of Muslim assholes yelling trash at her. They’ll even follow women who are accompanied by their husbands or boyfriends and trash talk them. Of course, the Muslims have a history of raping Aussie women and having their family and mosque blame the victims.
The Muslims in Australia also refuse to comply with the law. If a Muslim is stopped by the cops for any reason, they page their buddies and thirty angry Muslims show up to hassle the cops who, unbelievably, walk away. There are many encounters where a Muslim gets in a dispute with an Aussie, pages his crew, and the Aussie gets beat up. The cops make no arrests. They’re afraid to rile the Muslims.
For some reason, the US media does not cover this but it’s easy to find it in the Aussie websites and some of the media.

Sounds more like the Lebanese in Sydney actually, Tantor. Bear in mind there are a lot of them who affiliate themselves with a certain other religion that isn’t Islam. That being said..
I do believe that very recently our good Sheik Al-Hilaly has been saying some delightful things about the hostage crises in Iran. Whilst I expect such comments from posters over at Terry Jone’s Gaurdian column, I’ll see if I can dig up what he’s been saying..

Because, just like the typical Christian who goes to church on Sundays but doesn’t bother himself overly much with details like cursing, holding grudges, or taking notice of his friend’s hot wife the rest of the week, they’re not particularly good or consistent Muslims.
The claim is that Islam is fundamentally flawed, not that all Muslims are fundamentalist.
