According to Reuters, those residents are members of the Islamic Army of Iraq, a Baathist insurgent group that warned AQ two months ago to stop targeting its members and then formally broke with them (albeit maybe only temporarily) a week or so later. Here’s where they’re at now: Sunni Muslim Iraqi insurgents fought fierce battles on Thursday with al Qaeda-led militants for control of a neighbourhood in Baghdad that has effectively been outside government control for months. Iraqi and U.S. soldiers battled with Shiite cleric Muqtada Sadr’s Al Mahdi army today in the south-central Iraqi city of Diwaniyah that has been in the throes of a Shiite power struggle.
As many as six Mahdi army members were killed, 27 were detained and six wounded during fighting, the U.S. military said…

Detained? Detained!?!

Break out the jump suits and video cameras! I want to see these people paraded around, smiling, and apologizing to the Iraqi people for their trespass into Iraqi territory! Give them gift bags, a shower, and some food! Show the World that we can treat our “Detainess” just as well as the Iranians! I am sure there will be “backlash”, since there was none against Iran….. Come on people, we’re really not at war, right? It’s all a matter for the courts, the Democrats, the Media, and Allen Colmes, right?

The Head Guru at StratFor seems to agree with you, AP, and has Abandoned All Hope of any sort of American-allied democracy in Iraq. This does not seem to be a zero-sum game these days in Iraq: what is Bad for Them is not necessarily Good for the USA

These people ( yes, I just said ‘these people’ ) have been practicing killing each other for No Good Reason for eons, and nothing we can do will stop tham. Democracy does stop people from killing each other–at least routinely, on such a gory scale–but that is a dwindling hope

If the Bush Admin doesn’t unleash some of the Restrained Military that the US has in Iraq now, the Downhill Slide will get bloodier, and worse
