Good news: Quds Force members captured at Irbil might be released soon

Another scoop for the Sun, which broke the story a few days ago about the White House having helped secure the release of the Iranian diplomat as part of a de facto prisoner swap for the sailors. Obviously, Eli Lake has a source on the inside who’s not happy with what Bush is doing here. And rightly so.
The quid pro quo that supposedly would never happen is not only happening, it’s escalating:
Yesterday, a spokesman for the National Security Council, Gordon Johndroe, told reporters that America is negotiating a process with the Iraqi government that could lead to the release of the five Iranians, captured in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil by American forces on the morning of January 11, hours after President Bush announced a new Iraq strategy to combat the Iranian and Syrian networks in Iraq…
Mr. Johndroe’s announcement marks a change of course from earlier statements made by Mr. Bush and Secretary of Defense Gates about the captured Iranians. Mr. Gates said yesterday, “I think there’s no inclination right now to let them go.” But he also said the plan for granting access to the prisoners was being negotiated…
The Irbil five, however, are also of high value to the American military, whose commanders in Iraq have opposed efforts to hand over the men, who they say are high-ranking members of Iran’s Quds Force, to the Shiite-dominated Iraqi government.
One concern about releasing the five Iranians or transferring them to Iraqi custody, according to one administration official, is that they are knowledgeable about American interrogation techniques. “They will share this knowledge with the next batch of Quds officers that come to Iraq,” the official, who requested anonymity, said.
Another concern is that the five Iranians in American custody are particularly dangerous. The administration official described them as “paymasters” and “terrorism coaches.”
Bush reminds us constantly that he doesn’t want to second guess his commanders in the field, that he’s only doing what they tell him in planning Iraq strategy (which isn’t true, per some generals’ opposition to the surge). It figures that he’d choose to ignore that generally sound principle when it comes to this.
Exit question: I’ve already called April 26th as my date in the Quds Pro Quo pool. Anyone want in on this action now?

If this is true, then we officially lost this war and we should bring the troops home because if W doesn’t want to fight why should we ask are men to die.
djohn669 on April 6, 2007 at 3:48 PM
I’ll go with April 30.
BTW, Pelosi says her little sojourn to Syria strengthened ties. She’s completely out of her mind.
And I hadn’t noticed it before, but she’s got some serious man-hands.

Sad, truly sad….

Back in the 1970’s a Soviet MiG pilot defected, landing his plane in Japan. I think we should return the “Irbil 5″ to Iran the same way we returned the MiG to the Soviet Union…in a box.

so let me get this straight…
Iran takes the brits from iraqi waters, holds them hostages, makes a big pr splash, and in exchange they will get the irble 5 as a reward while their bombs, materials and support keeps killing our troops…
Does Iran have carte blance to do anyhting? and if this is the way they are now what about when they have the bomb?
Me thinks it is about time the abadjinand is taken out….

Hmmmmm, it’s almost as if Bush is a liar and an opportunist.

Feet first, one would hope.

Allah, I fear you may be right. But, since the sailors are now home, I hope GW decides to renege on the deal and ship the “Irbil 5″ to Gitmo for a little fun in the sun instead of freeing them. What would Iran do? Try the same thing twice? Maybe, but to what end… they risk world opinion turning against them, reminding all of the way things were back in the late 70’s and 80’s with hostages held everywhere.

Eli Lake rocks.
And this quid pro quo thing is disgusting. We’ve lost our will to win. This will not turn out well.

No, I’ll just take what’s left of my money, hang my head down low, and be on my way home.
I’m afraid we’re painfully close to answering this question: Did the victims of 9/11 and those in our coalition who gave their lives on the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq die in vain…?
CliffHanger on April 6, 2007 at 4:43 PM
If there still were such a thing as securing classified intelligence information, the world would never know we captured the Irbil 5 and they’d be in Gitmo spilling their guts to our interrogators.
That’s the way the world used to work. Secrets were kept secret, and intelligence on the enemy was gathered without any public knowledge or journalistic fanfare.
Nowadays we show our hand, sometimes inadvertently, other times purposely with the aid of our traitorous MSM, only to let our enemies take advantage and make us appear weak.

Well, regardless of what happens in Iraq, they are coming here. Hell, they are already here. And the next time they strike here, it is probably going to make 911 look like a picnic. I wonder if the American people will be willing to fight then, or if they will do the same thing they are doing now, until the ultimate demise of this Country occurs…
God help us.

That is why I am locked and loaded. I never going to pray 5 times to the east.

Any truth to the rumor that the UK and France are in merger negotiations?

A lot of definite articles are being thrown around here. What are the coroborating sources? I’d hate to have everybody get their panties in a wad because a story fits their preconcieved notions. It would be very Kossy of us.

Just the thought of this makes me ill. This whole mess disgusts me really. Here we have out strongest allie and supposedly one hellova military force just roll over for the Iranians. We have, by default, made a deal with Imanutjob by releasing the “diplomat”. And if the Quds guys get released…well…then it’s all over. I’m with Djohn:
When they come over here we’ll show them what our government is afraid to. Freedom is sweet…but it can be a real b**ch when you try and take it away.
Geesh…is Poland the only country willing to take the fight to the barbarians?
