David Hermelin was a successful insurance man and Jewish activist in the Detroit area. A major donor to the Democratic party, Hermelin and his wife Doreen lived in Bingham Farms, Michigan in the states wealthiest per capita zip code. They added a banquet room to their home that could seat 200 diners just so they could host fundraisers for Bill Clinton. Hermelin was a nice man by all accounts. The fact that he had no diplomatic experience didn’t stop Clinton from naming him Ambassador to Norway.

SouthernDem, I fully agree with you on the sad state that our country sends ambassadors around the world, with zero experience; also,in most cases not even speaking the basic language of the country they’re supposed to not only represent us in, but find out what actually goes on there.

On the other hand, Mr. Kerry should not be the one speaking on this topic.

“Ambassador” is just a title given out because our government can’t legally give out titles of nobility. It’s really no secret.

News flash: The Democrats are mad at President Bush about something. The word “Swiftboat” features prominently.

OK, I get it, Clinton, and other President’s, have used recess appointments. I have no problem with this. I wasn’t a huge supporter of Bolton, but at least he had the cred to do the job.
My problem here is that this guy’s only credentials seem to be his status of “Pioneer” fundraiser. No it’s not illegal, but it’s smelly. And yes, I realize that major donors are often rewarded with ambassador positions. I think this is a major flaw in the way our government is run. Rewarding people for fund raising by making them government officials; doesn’t that feel wrong to anyone else?
If someone can enlighten me to his experience with diplomacy, as opposed to saying “Well Clinton did it too”, I will gladly put my objections to rest.
