He and Hannity played a game of word association that almost ended in a knockout blow.

Almost.

Pssst, Mitt. “Moonbat.”

Close enough, I guess. Look on the bright side: if he wins, the White House press conferences will never be boring.

Update (Ian): D Mill suggests Bill O debate Rosie for charity on Pay Per View:

I did appreciate the “misguided” label he gave our former co-president though.

jarhead05 on April 4, 2007 at 11:06 PM

Huh, I actually like him better after seeing this. But I really want Fred to throw his hat in the ring.

“Near miss”?! How could you miss a target that big?

Moonunit and Dweezil. Frank ruled.

Moonbeam was funny. I thought Romney was really terrific in that interview. In addition to aforementioned^^^positives (I’m ignoring the negatives), I especially loved his dressing down of Madame Pelosi.

Texyank on April 4, 2007 at 11:02 PM

That’s Moon Unit Zappa. Jerry Brown of California was refered to as “Governor Moonbeam”. So maybe Mitt isn’t too far off.

eeyore on April 4, 2007 at 11:17 PM

Liked him from this clip as well. Of course, there’s always a degree of calculation in stuff like this, but I still thought it was very gracious.

asc85 on April 4, 2007 at 11:19 PM

Mitt is growing on me. It’s taken a while, but he is. It was a great idea for him to reach out to conservatives with Hannity like this so his base can get to know him better. From snippits I’ve seen, he’s actually very likeable and articulate.

why don’t I like him? I can’t put a finger on it, but I just don’t.
lorien1973 on April 4, 2007 at 11:04 PM

I struggled with this too. Is there just a hint of insincerity with him? Or is it a hint of arrogance?

thedecider on April 4, 2007 at 11:19 PM

He was probably thinking of the old term of describing whacked-out liberals

The Ugly American on April 4, 2007 at 11:21 PM

Snake oil. Cures everything. Nevermind reading the label.

He’s a nice guy. Articulate, clean,,,,,,,,,

Limerick on April 4, 2007 at 11:27 PM

Moonbeam is the original Moonbat AP, like eeyore said above. It refers back to Jerry Brown, Governor Moonbeam - way out Lib.

I though Mitt did a great job tonight - that’s the Mitt I know. As I said here a long time ago, the more people see the real him the more they will like him. Since Rudy is done Mitt has a real shot.

TheBigOldDog on April 4, 2007 at 11:41 PM

PS AP - if you want to see what a Mitt news conference would be like, just go find a copy of one of his last as Governor when he eviscerated a Moonbat Boston Globe reporter. It’s out there. Probably on YouTube. One the best news conferences I’ve seen in a very long time.

TheBigOldDog on April 4, 2007 at 11:44 PM

Mitt Romney Calls Out Media Bias

TheBigOldDog on April 4, 2007 at 11:47 PM

Pssst, Mitt. “Moonbat.”

Moonbeam is as offensive a word as I have ever heard a Mormon say, so you will have to live with it.

The thing Mitt has over Fred! is the executive experience. For a swing voter that’s the biggest hit against OOObama, so I’d hate to have to give that up. For those voters, Fred! vs OOObama is just a choice between two perty faces. Mitt vs. OOObama is real executive experience vs. yet another smooth talker.

pedestrian on April 5, 2007 at 12:01 AM

Is it just me or is Mitt Romney actually played by Bruce Campbell, of Army of Darkness fame.

http://underworld.fortunecity.com/playstation/190/aod10.jpg

You know, if you want to win over the young adult male crowd, all Mitt will have to say is…

“THIS IS MY BOOM STICK!”

He’s got my vote. Throw him in as VP with Giuliani.

Vincenzo on April 5, 2007 at 12:02 AM

OK, that last link doesn’t work. Try this:

He did answer pretty well to the other ones, though. I liked his associations on Hillary, Obama and Bush.

That could’ve been said about Reagan too, and he rocked.

Mojave Mark on April 5, 2007 at 12:04 AM

That could’ve been said about Reagan too, and he rocked.

California is a pretty big state to be chief executive of. Before that he was president of a union.

Vincenzo on April 5, 2007 at 12:20 AM

That’s my biggest concer with Mitt Vincenzo. Can he pull the trigger? Rudy can. I think fred Can. McCain could but would do so reluctantly. Tommy couldn’t even find the trigger.

TheBigOldDog on April 5, 2007 at 12:31 AM

Bah. Come on, folks. Weren’t you impressed with Mitt’s general presence here, in a real-time, apparently uncut interview, asked to speak extemporaneously in a way probably not expected? When was the last time you heard or saw Obama or Clinton speak without cue cards, teleprompters, or podium-bound talking points? Can you even envision them speaking off-script for more than a few seconds? They are extremely over-produced political constructs. Well-produced, for sure. But observe Romney, shooting from the hip and coming off charming, confident, and intelligent. Think back to the sudden YouTube release of the Romney-Kennedy debate, after which Romney released a YouTubed phone interview he did for a radio show mere hours later, directly addressing the issue in question. Mitt Romney is not the result of time- and money-honed produced perfection of an engineered politician; he’s a genuine freak of nature that happens to *be* a perfect politician (who also happens to carry 3 Harvard degrees, who happens to be a superlatively brilliant and successful businessman, and who over decades has proven himself to be a natural born leader and an uncommonly decent man).

Put that Kennedyesque smile, that Reaganesque hair, and that Romneyesque charm on air and you don’t even need to listen to his sensible and reasoned approach to almost every economic, social, and defense issue a conservative could care about before you pull the Romney lever.

Each cycle, Republican primary voters rightfully fret over whether it’s better to vote for the most desirable or the most electable candidate. In 2008, we have the rare luxury of a candidate like Mitt Romney, who uncompromisingly fills both bills.

Chalk me up as thoroughly convinced we’ll see a “Romney Democrat” movement in the run-up to November 2008 like we haven’t seen since 1984.

(And this time, Minnesota’s going down…)

flip on April 5, 2007 at 12:34 AM

Let’s face it. If one bible belter gets so much as an inkling that the next Republican candidate won’t push for a Constitutional Amendment allowing for firing squads of any teen girl who gets an abortion, that candidate is toast.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a God fearing Catholic, who hates the idea of abortions, and cringes at the site of social programs pumping them out as “planned parenthood,” but I don’t see how a sitting President will change anything about abortions in the forseeable future.

Also, I think we need to consider more when choosing our candidate.

Vincenzo on April 5, 2007 at 12:44 AM

That’s my biggest concer with Mitt Vincenzo. Can he pull the trigger?

From The Salt Lake Tribune, “a two-year compilation of Gallup polls showed American Mormons, more than any other religious group over that period, believed the United States was right to invade Iraq.”

Ahhh yes Hannity makes interview LOVE to Mitt. I think some one has a man crush.

I am sure Mitt was wearing his magic Mormon underwear he is required to wear. He sounds like another partisan party loyalist smoke blower.

If switching from pro-choice and pro-gun control over night was not enough, this interview convinced me, fake, phony, partisan, divider, party first politician. DUNZO for me. We need someone to join the nation together. A partisan GOP mormon is not going to do that.

Mormons are a considered a cult by some theologians, believe in weird stuff and considered anti-christian, a very prejudice group that despise non mormons. Mormons have secret handshakes, oaths, incantations and rituals, which originated in occult Scottish Rite Freemasonry, in order to be with God in heaven! (In the final years of Joseph Smith Jr.’s life, he became a “worshipful master” in the Masonic Lodge.) Sounds cultish.

It’ laughable to compare Kennedy being a Catholic as equal to Mitt being a Mormon. I see the apocalypse coming. YES MITT HAS GREAT HAIR.

The Mormon Church is a $30 BILLION DOLLER BUSINESS! That is Billion with a “Bee”. No wounder Mitt got all that money so fast. Guess where it came from, Salt Lake. Don’t live in SL if you are not a mormon. You will be lonely. They will shun you.

Rosie is an idiot and I hate her. I know she is wrong, so very wrong. However MITT called her a MOONBAT! That was stupid thing to say. Moonbat is what far RIGHT WING Wacko’s say when they have nothing intelligent to say.

Vincenzom perhaps you haven’t been following the balance of power in the Supreme Court too closely. The next President may very well be in a position to decide the issue by the next appointment or two. That’s one of the major reasons the Left is desperate to win in 08.

Mitt has a ton of cash, but I just cannot support him.

His instant flip flop on several issues are disingenuous attempts to get votes. He cannot be believed.

This latest “I’ve hunted all my life” coupled with the revelation that he has hunted only TWICE in his life is the final straw. He is a panderer and cannot be trusted. He will say ANYTHING to get elected and proves his untrustworthiness.

gmcjetpilot on April 5, 2007 at 1:38 AM

Right. Can’t wait for you to explain to me how Hill, The Sikly Pony or Obama will actually become “uniters, not dividers”.

Your definition of one who will “join the nation together” is one who will use the government to force a “sameness”.

First time I had seen Mitt in a Q&A. Gonna watch him a little closer.

BacaDog on April 5, 2007 at 7:42 AM

I get why Romney flip flopped. He was running (and won) the governorship of the People’s Republic of MA. He had to sound a little like the majority there. Now that he isn’t there anymore, he can be himself everywhere else. I don’t love him, but I do like him.

lynnv on April 5, 2007 at 8:13 AM

Mitt was always on my “would vote for” list. I’ve seen several interviews he’s done recently and he’s moving up the list. Heard he’s on a “ask me anything” tour, that takes guts and brains.

I have two thoughts here. First gmcjetpilot does not represent this site. Second, he’s saying things that are going to be brought up throughout the campaign. This site is simply a microcosm for the political conversation that we will hear on the runnup to this election. Romney’s Mormanism will be an issue and it will be an issue that I predict he handles just fine with eloquence and dignity. gmcjetpilot seems to have an odd obsession with Mormanism which is a reflexion of ignorance. Either he knows more then us and we are ignorant or he is ignorant. I’m leaning towards the latter.

why don’t I like him? I can’t put a finger on it, but I just don’t.

lorien1973 on April 4, 2007 at 11:04 PM

I think I know why. Because he is the “Bad Guy Politician” right out of Central Casting via hollywood.
We’ve seen variations of the slick, well spoken, good looking, but ultimately evil conservative politician in made-for-tv movies for decades, and they’ve all been Mitt Romney! (Except for last years 24, where the bad guy was Nixon).

Hollywood’s been ringing this dinner bell for a long long time. Now here’s Mitt, and like Pavlov’s dogs, we’re having the conditioned response, the little voice in our heads that says—

why don’t I like him? I can’t put a finger on it, but I just don’t.

lorien1973 on April 4, 2007 at 11:04 PM

OneEyedJack on April 5, 2007 at 10:50 AM

It says a LOT about a candidate that puts up self depricating humor about himself. look at his website and watch the movies.
the one with Imus is a KILLER!

I still think if the Mormon Thing is gonna Kill him, that a ticket of “Fred Thompson / Mitt Romney 2008″ would work for me!

-Wasteland Man.

P.S. His website says hes raised 23 million so far. pretty good for a 5th place candidate, and especially since the MSM is drooling over shrillary’s 25 mill.

ReubenJCogburn on April 5, 2007 at 11:13 AM

why don’t I like him? I can’t put a finger on it, but I just don’t.

lorien1973 on April 4, 2007 at 11:04 PM

Because, in the words of Dennis Miller, Romney’s “too slick by half.” He’s too tangled up in the ballet dance of primary fundraising to show much agression. I think you’d like him far more when he’s under pressure.

He’s a pressure player. I think we’ll start seeing that side of him come December/January or so.

spmat on April 5, 2007 at 11:34 AM

I think a large part of the “I’m not sure I can put a finger why I don’t like him” might stem from one, the classic “smooth talking Hollywood evil conservative” bit that OneEyedJack mentioned, but another thing is that he seems too perfect? Like how can we trust a guy who comes across this good? There MUST be something there, right?

I think we are too cynical about politicians to trust one that seems perfect, so people keep looking for flip-flops or something. Guess what–maybe there isn’t any?

As far as religion goes, I suppose to me, even if I wasn’t LDS, the fact that libs and Dems hate the Mormons more than they do even the Conservative Southern Christians is sort of reassuring to me, in a “if they hate them so much, they MUST be doing something right” style of thing. The fact that anti-Mormon prejudice is still socially acceptable on many fronts (not just from libs) is a curious phenomenon. Yet it undoubtedly exists–just see what the comments at say, the Washington Post when they do a Romney story. I honestly think that the Left in this country hates Mormons more than they do Islamic terrorism. And so do some so-called Christians as well.

Vanceone on April 5, 2007 at 12:03 PM

I saw Mitt speak at CPAC and then at his reception there. I felt that he was a little too slick as well. I talked to a reporter who was there about it and he said, “Well, he’s making up for that time where he went on and on for 52 minutes straight. Someone had a talk with him.” He’s coming into his own and I LOVED what he said at CPAC. At one point he told this story about campaigning in Mass. and he was in a sketchy neighborhood. There were boarded up windows on the buildings etc. Mitt said, “A man from the neighborhood said to me, ‘What are you doing here? This is Kennedy country.’ I looked around and said ‘Yeah, I guess it is.’” Brilliant - I love him.

foxforce91 on April 5, 2007 at 4:51 PM

Love the point that Mitt is on even when it’s off the cuff. Can’t wait for the debates — I think he’ll be quite in his element!

I’m a Christian, but does our President have to be? I’d certainly prefer a Morman over a Muslim … It seems that America has had Divine assistance in so much of her history, and I pray God continues to guide us in electing our Presidents. As long as we move forward with decent, good leaders of genuine integrity, who have our country’s and our citizens’ best interest in the forefront of their minds (yes, I’m thinking W! Except for the immigration stuff - I just don’t get his position there) —- then, I believe we will continue to be strong, righteous, and blessed.
