Photo of the day; Update: House committee staff: Avoid references to “long war”

It’s only 10:15, but it’s safe to say there’ll be no topping this. Vastly more offensive than the headscarf photo, too. “We came in friendship, hope, and determined that the road to Damascus is a road to peace,” she said afterwards, which, thanks to the Syrian government, it certainly has been for people like Khaled Meshaal and Alois Brunner.
They went out to lunch later. I guess he wanted to show her off a little.
Update: Really, it’s almost not worth knocking Pelosi. No one on either side is surprised that she’d do this. Focus the anger where it really belongs.
Update: New leadership, new ideas, new measures to discourage people from associating Iraq with a broader war on terror, which can have the unpleasant effect of making them think we should try to win there.
But that’s an old debate. This part is new:
A memo for the committee staff, circulated March 27, says the 2008 bill and its accompanying explanatory report that will set defense policy should be specific about military operations and “avoid using colloquialisms.”
The “global war on terror,” a phrase first used by President Bush shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the U.S., should not be used, according to the memo. Also banned is the phrase the “long war,” which military officials began using last year as a way of acknowledging that military operations against terrorist states and organizations would not be wrapped up in a few years.

Does Madame Pelosi have presidential aspirations? That can be the only purpose here.

Pelosi is a pandering, leftist appeaser and is sickeningly disgusting.

Split the image, can the center, stitch….we got a winner!
She is really pushing the ‘foreign policy’ thing…..made Sec State? What a lovely thought. He policy will be ‘Where do I sign?’.

Well, now that the house has banned the war on terror, I guess the meeting did have a positive outcome.

Good Lord, why do people still believe in friendship and hope? That never solves anything.

What a sickening perversion of what the road to Damascus has come to represent.
infidel4life on April 4, 2007 at 10:59 AM
So, he co-ops Pelosi as a friend to his terroist state.
Bush KNOWS that Assad will NEVER drop his terrorist agenda until Israel capitulates (which they never will).
So, in effect, Pelosi is aligning herself, and by extension the entire democrat party, with a terroist state for the entire US voting population to see.
Hello, conservative presidential win in 08!!!!
ROVE YOU MAGNIFICENT BASTARD!!!
csdeven on April 4, 2007 at 11:01 AM
True that, Allah. Let’s not forget the three RINOs that sold us out to give her legitimacy.
This is not a good thing. I said it yesterday, and I’ll say it again. It sets a real bad trend. If this keeps up, we’ll have a split in gov’t, why confine yourself to one gov’t if you don’t have to? Pelosi and the antiwar crowd aren’t, they’re effectively acting as a second gov’t, and ditto all the others who’ve pulled this little stunt too. Irresponsible, dumb, and it shows a total lack of insight, whether you agree with Bush or not.
Oh, and Assad has no chin.

Why do they insist on calling this thug president?
When was he elected?
Seems to me he might be sporting some wood there with Stretch showing him some leg. Isn’t that forbidden over there?

Yep.

Put a terrorist enabler in a 3 piece suit and he is still a terrorist enabler. Notice how western these guys dress when they are paying it up for the western audience? And yet time after time we in the west just gobble it up. There is a word for this, SUCKER!
And just like most victims of a scam, and something the scam artist counts on to allow him to continue his wicked ways, the victim is too embarrased to admit they were fooled. I would think that after 20 to 30 years of them saying one thing and doing another we would get a clue. Why do we accept their words but ignore their actions?

Political whore.
fogw on April 4, 2007 at 11:14 AM
I know I shouldn’t say this. But did you guys see her make the sign of the cross at the tomb of John the Baptist? I have never seen such an awkward gesture. It was like she had practiced it to make sure she did it right, but still wasn’t sure. That was just my take.
OT, but I caught the ever fair and balanced David Gregory on the news this morning. And he said (I don’t have the exact quote) That Bush was asking for time to make one last push to make sure Iraq doesn’t spiral into a blood bath. But that what Bush wouldn’t acknowledge is that it already has.
Good grief!!!
Rightwingsparkle on April 4, 2007 at 11:14 AM
“road to peace”? Wow, she got assurances from Assad that he will stop sponsoring terrorism? I doubt that somehow….
I can’t believe the picture of Pelosi; I wonder how Assad tolerates the uncovered meat in his palace?
RW Wacko on April 4, 2007 at 11:14 AM
Has Bush denounced their visit? I heard they were there on his behest. If so, what message did they deliver?
Maybe Assad had better be VERY careful how this Pelosi trip is presented to the media if he EVER wants a dialogue with the Bush admin? Perhaps in a way that makes Pelosi look like the clueless, over-reaching, power hungry loon that she is? Well, that doesn’t seem like a stretch to me because that is exactly how she appears (to me anyway) after this trip.

i keep getting flashbacks to that scene in the movie Airplane where everybody lines up in the aisle to slpa the gal who is freaking out, except in this case all of the western politicians are lining up to get slapped to my the Middle Eastern dictator of their choice. And that applies to both political parties here in the US and most of the EU leaders, who not only get slapped but are paying cash for the privilege!

Greeting card diplomacy.
Or, this could also have been her answer during the interview portion of the Miss Syria pageant. How cheesy, not to mention stupid.

Lawrence on April 4, 2007 at 11:51 AM
I don’t think Assad or Pelosi care about Bush (or what he thinks). To them, this is all about new beginnings, and for what is to come in 2009 – because, they all believe the Dems will not only continue to keep both the House and Senate, but will also be in the White House.
Rick on April 4, 2007 at 11:53 AM
I’m partial to this photo. Isn’t Nabih Berri actually in Hezbollah? Nice.

I don’t know if he’s a member but he’s certainly an Assad stooge, yes.
Allahpundit on April 4, 2007 at 11:54 AM
The whole purpose of Pelosi’s trip may have been to go over campaign strategy to ensure that the Dems do win the White House?
To her credit Nancy is doing her part in trying to get our troops out of that corner of the world and proving that denial ain’t just the name of a river in Egypt.
LakeRuins on April 4, 2007 at 11:56 AM
It is indeed worth knocking Pelosi – focusing anger on her is entirely justifiable.
I’m not happy about the three Republicans who went to visit Assad, but let’s face it, no one knows who these guys are and that won’t change even after they’ve come and gone. And, even though the WH has tried to discourage visits from members of Congress to Syria, presumably these three Republicans wouldn’t bad mouth the administration and would push the same policies that the administration has.
OTOH, the symbolism of Pelosi’s visit to Syria couldn’t be more powerful. She’s third in line to the presidency, the first female Speaker of the House, arguably the ‘most powerful woman in America’ and has openly slammed the administration’s policies not just towards Syria, but the entire Middle East (and beyond, for that matter). So there’s no way in hell that she’s there to represent US interests. Nancy Pelosi is there to represent the Democratic party’s interests – and her own interests, which are, in no particular order, power, power, and power – thrown in with a mixture of defiance and callous indifference to how the actions of her and her “delegation” may affect US/Syrian relations (which are already strained as it is). This is no different from the Chairman of the DNC having chats with ‘world leaders’ and telling them that things will be different and better once a Democrat (again, presumably) takes control of the WH in 2008.
SisterToldjah on April 4, 2007 at 12:17 PM
I will say that she gets a tiny bit of respect from me for not wearing the headscarf when she was meeting with Mr. Assad.
She just went up a notch in my book.
That puts her at notch -372,342,234….
JadeNYU on April 4, 2007 at 12:18 PM
If you think we should “focus our anger” at 3 fairly anonymous Congresscritters instead of the third in line for the presidency, well, that’s quite frankly, idiotic!
Capitalist Infidel on April 4, 2007 at 12:23 PM
1400 years isn’t a long war?
Connie on April 4, 2007 at 12:26 PM
This is worse because she is a member of the House (the legislative branch) out there acting on behalf of the U.S. (an executive branch power), without any authority to do so. Pelosi only represents her district, but is acting like she was elected on a national level. The DNC chair, on the other hand, can do whatever he wants – he doesn’t represent anyone other than his party.
Rick on April 4, 2007 at 12:34 PM
“Pelosi says purpose of her trip to Damascus is part of her responsibility for US national security.”
She has no responsibility for National Security, but to give the President the tools he needs to execute his plans for National Security. She wasn’t elected President, and neither were the Dems.
amerpundit on April 4, 2007 at 12:37 PM
Well said, although being compared to Pelousi is an insult to whores.
Nancy’s just there to promote the Democratic Party’s No Terrorist Left Behind initiative.
ReubenJCogburn on April 4, 2007 at 1:21 PM
To the left, “rules” are something for the little people.
I basically am learning to just ignore the “concerns” of the left because their concepts of fairness, truth, justice and the law come down to “what do I want RIGHT NOW.”
They complain bitterly if someone else MIGHT have broken a law, but they do it all the time themselves.
We see moonbats freaking out and committing assault over the idea that Karl Rove may have broken an e-mail storage rule, but oddly enough there doesn’t seem to be any rioting over Pelosi violating the separation of powers and the Logan act.
That’s just the latest in an endless chain of examples.
If it wasn’t for a sympathetic press corps and academy, the “Progressive movement” would be not so much a political power as a collection of bums and thugs. Well, it would be obvious that’s what they are, I should say.
Merovign on April 4, 2007 at 1:24 PM
She really does want world peace!
Laura on April 4, 2007 at 1:29 PM
Her “road to peace” will undoubtedly be paved with the blood of the Israelis.
RedinBlueCounty on April 4, 2007 at 2:07 PM
A new method of appeasement has just been demonstrated by Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi.
Instead of the typical appeasement strategy of going ‘hat-in-hand’ to your enemies, ala Neville Chamberlain, Pelosi goes to our enemies – ‘scarf-on-head’.
Pelosi, in doing so, has diss’d her own country, and shown submissiveness to a foreign power. No wonder Assad is seen grinning in all of the photo-ops.

Clarification from the Prime Minister’s Bureau
“Following quotes attributed to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, during her visit to Damascus, the Prime Minister’s Bureau wishes to clarify the following:
During Mrs. Pelosi’s meeting with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, before her visit to Syria, the Prime Minister said that a number of Senate and House members who recently visited Damascus received the impression that despite the declarations of Bashar Assad, there is no change in the position of his country regarding a possible peace process with Israel.”

Am I reading this correctly?
Did Pelosi mis-represent to the terrorists state leaders what Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said to her about Israels policy towards said terrorist states?
Oh please lord, let it be true!

SanFranNan just isn’t a natural politician. In that “photo of the day,” you can tell how hard she is trying to figure out how to sit, how much to smile or look serious, what to do with her hands. I wonder, how many hours of negotiation went into getting that session with no hijab and an above-the-knee skirt?

Perhaps the Democrats can call it “The War Formerly Known As Long.”

An eterprizing ad-man could really do something with the images of her speaking in Assyria. Play the music “Springtime For Hitler In Germany” and show awkward black and whites of Nanny State Fran speaking to a despot. Remember Reagan’s brilliant “I remember You” spots back in ‘84 that slammed Carter?
The Republicans better have a real man show up for ‘08.
