Holocaust history dropped in some UK schools to avoid offending Muslim pupils

posted at 9:14 pm on April 1, 2007 by Allahpundit

The logic here’s no different really than in that dKos post that knocked Michelle for failing to respect Islamic cultural prejudices. They’ve got a problem with learning about the Holocaust? Then don’t teach them about the Holocaust. Racist.

It’s not part of the new “heart and minds” campaign to beat back the continuing pull of Al Qaeda inside the country, but given the profound, serious understanding “moderate” British Muslim groups have shown for the enormity of Nazi crimes, it might as well be.

Schools are dropping the Holocaust from history lessons to avoid offending Muslim pupils, a Governmentbacked study has revealed.

It found some teachers are reluctant to cover the atrocity for fear of upsetting students whose beliefs include Holocaust denial.

There is also resistance to tackling the 11th century Crusades – where Christians fought Muslim armies for control of Jerusalem – because lessons often contradict what is taught in local mosques…

It found some teachers are dropping courses covering the Holocaust at the earliest opportunity over fears Muslim pupils might express anti-Semitic and anti-Israel reactions in class.

Exit question: This should earn them some goodwill with Ahmadinejad, huh?

What we are looking at here is a civilization in the midst of committing suicide. The cultural, social, and political elites in Europe, the UK, and yes, even in the US, no longer have the will or desire to continue on. If it were just them, I’d say good bye…so long…adios. But, they insist on bringing the rest of us down with them.

Mark Steyn is right, Europe (and the UK) is doomed.

History is what happened, not what some wish that would/would not have happened, unrelated to denials, theories, idealisms, sensitivities or biases.

If you didn’t catch this at the UN watch thread, it’s a must listen to video, and read what’s admissible and inadmissible at the UN Human Rights Council.

The EUnuchs are capitulating, unfortunately England with them. Then it will be us. Not too much physical fighting is necessary to travel that path. It’s all ideological by our socialist and green friends. They will be the first to perish, this being just a very small consolation.

The crazy thing about this law is that it will encourage al-Qaeda to continue pushing to victory. I mean if you’re winning a war just keep on fighting. The British educational system is a complete joke anyway and has created a generation of illiterates. Tony Blair has been right on the war and wrong on everything else. Hey, the fight’s not over yet!

There’s no link above to the article about schools and history, but here’s the link from LGF: Teachers drop the Holocaust to avoid offending Muslims.

This is a column on the results of:

The study, funded by the Department for Education and Skills, looked into ‘emotive and controversial’ history teaching in primary and secondary schools.

It mentions either two or three schools (the article seems unclear). And concludes by saying:

But Chris McGovern, history education adviser to the former Tory government, said: “History is not a vehicle for promoting political correctness. Children must have access to knowledge of these controversial subjects, whether palatable or unpalatable.”

The researchers also warned that a lack of subject knowledge among teachers – particularly at primary level – was leading to history being taught in a ‘shallow way leading to routine and superficial learning’.

Lessons in difficult topics were too often ‘bland, simplistic and unproblematic’ and bored pupils.

INC on April 1, 2007 at 11:03 PM

Shocking. So now facts cannot be taught in schools unless it is taught in mosques first?

Wow.

Perhaps a field trip to Dachau would help.

Interesting how the libs, who wanted to push teaching every multi-cultural nonsense that came down the pike now refuse to teach certain culture so as not to offend.

Makes one wonder if France also refuses to teach certain things so as not to offend.

Check out LGF.

I cannot believe this, what has gone wrong in Britain…?

WisCon on April 1, 2007 at 11:27 PM

Here’s the website for the British Department for Education and Skills.

I can’t find the actual study yet. Maybe I’m in the wrong place or it’s not up yet. The Mail article is dated April 2nd.

I did find the link to this document from March of 2006: Country Report on Holocaust Education in Task Force Member Countries.

Here are some quotes from it:

The Holocaust is a statutory subject in the English National Curriculum for History. It must be taught at Key Stage 3*, in the topic ‘A world study after 1900’:

…The Holocaust is not currently statutory in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, although there is evidence that a number of schools teach it. This will be addressed further below.

Evidence indicates that the Holocaust or aspects of it are addressed in other subjects or at other stages by some schools (see question 7).

It’s an interesting study. If I find the other one tomorrow I’ll try to post it here.

While there’s obviously a lot of dangerous PC garbage going on, part of our fight is a mind game against propaganda. That includes trying to assess the reality of the situation to see if it’s being factually reported.

Remember this is the MSM we’re talking about here.

INC on April 1, 2007 at 11:27 PM

Here’s more from the County Report from last year:

The State of Holocaust Education Overall
In the last 12 years since the Holocaust became mandatory, there has been a noticeable improvement in how and the extent to which the Holocaust is taught in English schools. Alongside this, the amount of resources that have become available have made a marked difference to quality and approaches.
(This is also the case for the Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.)

Although it is right to remain critical of the level of teaching of the Holocaust and there is no clear way of monitoring what is happening, there are a number of indicators. These are (in no particular order):

Requests for Holocaust Survivors to go into schools
The London Jewish Cultural Centre: more than 150 visits in the academic year 2003–2004, resulting in over 240 talks, reaching more than 14,000 students.

The Holocaust Educational Trust:

Visits to Holocaust exhibitions
(Imperial War Museum, Anne Frank in the World, Beth Shalom, and the Jewish Museum)

The number of schools conferences

Requests to all the organisations for resources
The London Jewish Cultural Centre, 2003–2004 more than 200 requests
The Holocaust Educational Trust, 2003–2004, 260 requests
(For both of these organisations, some of the requests were for joint resources.)

The Future

There is a real concern for the future of Holocaust education once eyewitnesses to the event are no longer present. They currently add insight and reality, as well as a definite link to that period. Although there are a number of initiatives under way to preserve their experiences for the long term, their age and eventual deaths will leave a gap in the educational process.

There are questions of whether it is still appropriate to emphasise the Holocaust when more recent genocides have occurred are sure to be raised.

There is no threat to the Holocaust’s status in the National Curriculum, especially with the arrival of Holocaust Memorial Day. However, the style and symbolism of the Holocaust is likely to alter in future decades.

INC on April 1, 2007 at 11:31 PM

BTW, I was mistaken about the County Report. It was not issued by the British government buy by the The Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance, and Research. IMO, that gives it even more credibility.

In a parliamentary “first past the post” system, you cannot win a majority unless you pander to large voting blocks. As Steyn points out, it’s the demographics. We’re going to see more of this in every similar democratic system that has been infected with the Islamic virus.

You don’t have to win a majority to wield tremendous power in Westminster systems. Being a majority spoiler is ample enough power to work a political agenda. This is exactly what we are seeing.

Local politics will certainly be quite demonstrative of this phenomenon.

My nomination for best comment so far. Perfectly captures the self-parody that the liberal political correctness/multi-culti crowd has devolved into.

If they’re going to take out the Crusades and the Holocaust, there’s going to be some time to fill in British education, no? I suggest a new approach:

Teacher: “Since we can no longer teach the past, we will now substitute insstruction on Britain’s future.”

- Plays a two-hour long loop of cut scene from H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine, specifically the part where the disgusting Eloi obediently let themselves be carried off by the Morlochs.

Teacher: Any questions? No? Class dismissed.”

I like the Brits, but I can’t look at them too long, lest my admiration for their past turn into contempt for their present and pity for their future. The once-great, roaring British Lion has turned into a feeble, toothless tabby, passively waiting for someone to put it to sleep.

The Brits have just taken one step closer to establishing the Islamic Republic of England. True history is no longer acceptable in British schools if it differs from Muslim lies. The next step is to make the Muslim alternate version of history the standard in all the schools. Allah Akbar!

I recommend that the Brits start applying for visas and American citizenship now to avoid the rush later when the dhimmi laws are passed by the British caliph. There’s going to be quite a rush for the exits when the Muslims achieve critical mass in your society.
