Breaking: White House says Tony Snow’s cancer has recurred; Update: Bush video added

And that it’s spread to his liver, according to Fox. Damn it. Standby.
Update: Here’s the AP article. No other details yet.
Update: Even the DUers are sympathetic.
Update: Prognosis: good.
Snow will go after the cancer as aggressively as he can, and he’s going to beat it again, Perino said, describing his attitude.
Blood tests and a PET imaging scan had come back negative for cancer.
There are a lot of effective therapies to treat liver cancer that has spread from colon cancer, said FOX News’ Dr. Manny Alvarez.
“It’s small enough that he should go into remission again after adequate treatment,” Alvarez said.
Update: They first spotted the growth six months ago.
Snow undergoes regular tests, including a PET imaging scan to help doctors see how organs and tissues are functioning, magnetic resonance imaging tests, and CAT scans to generate cross-sectional views and, if needed, three-dimensional images.
These scans revealed the growth in September. Though it has grown in size since, blood tests and further PET scans have not indicated a return of his cancer. He said it could merely be biopsied to see if it is cancerous, and then periodically checked afterward if not, but that he would rather just have it out.
He’s still got his sense of humor, at least: “Perino said Snow also gave her some instructions to pass on to reporters: ‘Tell them not to bug me.’ He also thanked reporters and others for the outpouring of good wishes he has received.”
Update: Here’s the president’s statement.

Because we’re too busy subsidizing treatments, healthcare and pharmacuticals to make it economically worthwhile to find cures.
People may be slowly dying, but at least we feel good about it. And getting re-elected.

Man, this sucks.
Everyone has cancer because that’s what happens to these weak bodies of ours. Our bodies are a helluva lot more fragile than we think…these cells we have seem to always be on the verge of going wacko.
It’s kinda scary when you think about it.
Get well Tony!

benrand on March 27, 2007 at 10:26 AM
Oh, I’m sure they are whipped up into a death frenzy over at lefty blogs. Or do you think Tony is somehow less evil than Dick? I think the BDS runs pretty damned deep. Anyone affiliated with GW must not only die, but soon, and as painfully as possible. Disgusting.
Good thing Tony works for the Republican side. Otherwise they’d likely cut his salary and expect the cancer to retreat by the end of ‘08. You know. Becuase his body isn’t doing its part, and refuses to step up its willingness to defend itself. It’s not cancer. It’s civil war.
Look! I can make up crazy false equivalance too!
JunkCoast on March 27, 2007 at 10:27 AM
I did a momentary Kostroll, and suprisingly found a slight majority offering condolences. There was lots of “look what working for Bush gets you”, and “karma’s a bitch”, but there was some sincere concern. One of the best statements, however, was:

Okay — thought I would go check out the comments on those “other sites.” HuffPo just linked to it from Yahoo News. No separate post / no comments
DU comments are amazingly civil, and within them is this message:
(emphasis mine) Riiiiight…. So they are preemptively deleting anything inappropriate.
Kos comments — not so much. No overt death-wishes, but plenty like this:
Both Kos and DU reference nasty comments from the right regarding Elizabeth Edwards. Anyone seen any of those??
I wish we had showers at work. I feel slimed.

This just sucks. Prayers for Tony and family. Sadly reminiscent of Lee Atwater who was taken from us far too soon.
SicSemperTyrannus on March 27, 2007 at 10:53 AM
You know, I actually feel worse for those sliming Tony than I do for Tony himself. I pray that God would grant him health and long life – yet I know that he has a hope and a strength that a lot of his opponents just don’t understand.
I feel bad for those people who have nothing more than hope in some political agenda to give meaning to their life. To wish evil on Tony, or to call it “bad karma” is embarrassingly immature and soul-less.
They must be very unhappy people.
God bless Tony, his wife and kids. God grant him health, strength and peace that passes all understanding

Prayers again for him and his family. I hope that those who have nothing nice to say on kos, du, or hp rot in hell. They’re a terrible bunch of people who cannot understand that regardless of ones political feelings, no one should ever wish death or ill on anyone. These people make me want to pull my hair out (sorry pulling my hair out! :) )
Catie96706 on March 27, 2007 at 11:08 AM
Suprisingly funny in the midst of a thread full of grief.
Funny as it is, it doesn’t get to the heart of the previous question.
I resonate with those comments that express frustration and anguish. As a pastor, I do my fair share of funerals… I start everyone saying that death is a tragedy, that illness is the enemy, and that when we lose someone they can’t be replaced because a unique individual, created in the image of God, has died. We feel sick to our stomachs, experience that angst because we genuinely care for people, wish them well, and know that we too will one day go the way of all flesh.
Someone has said that we all start dying from the day we’re born. Take a look around in the world, and we see this reality written in the earth around us… we are all dying. We rightly feel like death is the enemy… because it is.
Glad to know someone cares enough to do something about it. Not going to preach in the comments section, I do all my preaching on my blog.
I really hope that Snow and Edward’s illnesses are a cause for maturity among the elder statesmen and adults in the blogosphere. Mocking someone’s illness is disgusting. Praying that someone will renounce their ‘liberalism’ or ‘conservatism’ during their illness and repenting of supporting this or that administration is equally disgusting. Remember these days and this story when our political “enemies” die, or get ill… and make a pledge not to be an idiot about it.
Not that you would… but… there are lots of idiots out there.
Wishing God’s grace to the Edwards’s [sp?] and the Snow’s in these hard days,
PastaKeith on March 27, 2007 at 11:17 AM
I hope and pray he beats this. And the same goes for Elizabeth Edwards. My prayers for them and their families.
Ellen on March 27, 2007 at 11:17 AM
And hell isn’t anything I’d wish on a person who’d spit on my mom. Maybe a stiff fine, or being tarred and feathered and set in the stocks… but hell? Forever is a long time.
PastaKeith on March 27, 2007 at 11:18 AM
We’re praying hard for Tony. His resolve will pull him through again.
Best wishes Tony.
George on March 27, 2007 at 11:18 AM
Yes, PastaKeith, it was intended to be funny. No disrespect toward Mr. Snow of anyone fighting cancer. Cancer/illness/death are very serious things. Very Serious Things still need humor.
PattyAnn on March 27, 2007 at 11:21 AM
This sucks not just for Tony and family, but for America. This is not a good time for the smartest guy in DC to go down.
Prayers for a full and speedy recovery. We need you, Snowman.

We believe that you will be victorious in this battle. God be with you.

PastaKeith, glad you’re a swell and don’t wish hell on anyone. On the other hand, it’s an expression but who cares-these people really aren’t worth wasting time or energy on. What’s important is that Tony Snow and Elizabeth Edwards and everyone else who suffers from cancer and their families receive the prayers and respect they deserve.

Glynn on March 27, 2007 at 11:53 AM
Mrs Edwards’ cancer vs Snow’s. This could potentially turn into a ghoulish result. Sympathy and prayers to both people, though. I don’t have much faith for liberals to extend such a sympathy of hope and/or prayers for Tony after seeing them disparage President Reagan’s death as a “godsend”. Like somebody said here, Huffpo must be working overtime moderating her board.

Best wishes, Tony Snow! You are a very effective spokesman, and I hope you can make it back. And if it makes it any better, if you get well again, the LLL will get even sicker on hate and bile.
Vanceone on March 27, 2007 at 1:39 PM
Unfortunately, yes. Not as many as spew from the left in these situations. Not directly wishing pain or death on Mrs. Edwards. None here or at RedState. But I did see many harsh comments at Free Republic when the Edwards news broke. They were mostly along the lines of criticizing John for continuing his campaign or putting himself first. Some, though, seemed to be hoping (or at least predicting) that John would have trouble finding good doctors to care for his wife as payback for a long career of suing doctors. It wasn’t nearly as bad as we usually see at HuffPo, but it still left a bad taste in my mouth. I haven’t been back to FR since then.
My prayers are with the Snows and the Edwardses.

The left seems to be playing nice with the news of Snow being diagnosed with cancer. But the truth is far different. If you look you’ll see that they’re only as nice as the speed the moderators can delete the comments. Like from Think Progress. Comment #102
“God’ll get all you GOP sleazebags for selling out the country.”
or Comment #105
“Hundeds of people are diagnosed with cancer everyday. It sucks for anyone. Why the fawning over an a-hole like snow? He’s the mouthpiece for a group of thugs that have hijacked our country. He can rot in hell with the rest of them. Niceties are long gone after six years of Bush and his cabal running the show.”
The nutroots are still there, they’ve just been muted.

An especially nice quote from WP.
The truth is that Tony Snow is gay and he has aids. You will not read this anywhere for a long while, at least until he dies, but he has had a gay lover for many years and has been HIV positive for at least a decade.
Glynn on March 27, 2007 at 3:18 PM
I did the quote wrong. I’ll try again!
Glynn on March 27, 2007 at 3:19 PM
Doctors tend to keep their cancer patients on a short leash after a major surgery with follow-up chemotherapy. Even though this metastasis is of great concern, the outlook isn’t necessarily bleak.
If it hasn’t even shown up in the CT scans, this must’ve been caught quite early. Advances in treatment for liver-specific metastases are rewriting the long-term numbers quite favorably.
Mr Snow undoubtedly is getting the best care available, but prayers are always helpful and he certainly has mine.
DuffBeer on March 27, 2007 at 3:41 PM
Colon cancer runs in Tony’s family. His mother died of colon cancer when he was 17. At present, the statistics for colon cancer with metastasis to the liver stand at 15% for 5 year survival rate. Unfortunately, though doctors may keep their patients on a short leash, colon cancer has an affinity for the liver as far as metastases and doctors will often taken a wait and see attitude in many instances. When I read that they were originally not expecting to find the mass in this pelvis malignant, I was somewhat astonished, as, as a medical professional, that would have been my first thought, that it WAS very concerning. Having said that, I am sure he is getting the best care available and my prayers are most certainly with him. I am a great believer in prayer.
Glynn on March 27, 2007 at 4:00 PM
I am not “the liberals”, I am responsible for my own actions alone, it’s foolish to label people. For instance, I do not think that all righties are inarticulate dolts who are reduced to “stuff it” when flailing about desperately trying to make a point.
See how this works?
