Bob Novak: Fred!’s wife urging him to run

posted at 5:32 pm on March 27, 2007 by Allahpundit

It’s three days old but somehow I missed it. Apologies.

Close friends of Fred Thompson say his wife Jeri is urging him to take the plunge later this year and run for the Republican presidential nomination.

The former senator from Tennessee and current actor on “Law & Order,” in private conversation, makes it clear that he is seriously interested in launching a candidacy that has attracted extraordinary attention over the last two weeks. However, he does not plan to announce his candidacy in the immediate future.

This makes a little more sense now.

I think it’s time we start the pool. Exit question: When?

I think it’s time we start the pool. Exit question: When?

Knowing my luck, when I’m on vacation and the Emergency Blogging System is running my blog (that would be Memorial Day week and early August).

But, if you want a solid date, Tuesday, 5/29/2007.

steveegg on March 27, 2007 at 5:36 PM

I somehow think AP will have a post on 4/1 claiming Fred’s in, but it’ll be a post about fred flintstone or something :P

aaaack should be 7/04/07

mrfixit on March 27, 2007 at 5:50 PM

Exit question: When?

The day after what shall in the future be known as “Fred Thompson Eve.”

frankj on March 27, 2007 at 5:50 PM

I’m going with 7/13/07 ohhh wait…
Make that 7/6/07
That way he dominates the news cycle

Iblis on March 27, 2007 at 5:53 PM

All I know is Fred speaks bluntly when it comes to illegals and our borders. That’s a thousand times more than any other politician has had the Malkins to do.

darwin on March 27, 2007 at 5:59 PM

Jeri Kehn Thompson is brilliant and beautiful.

Valiant on March 27, 2007 at 6:06 PM

This is just what someone like Jeri would like. High profile, limelight…she is salivating at the thought of first lady. I am sure when she was a lobbyist (yeah I know a media consutant for a law firm…other words an unregistered lobbyist), she was really good because she was so smart…not bad looking either.

right2bright on March 27, 2007 at 6:07 PM

Speaking of wives, maybe we can convince Kris Benson to run, now that he’s out for the season. He’s not 35, but it would be a blast to have Anna running around messing up his campaign.

Yeah. We need more like him. Hey, maybe we can get that Tancredo guy to say something, sometime.

amerpundit on March 27, 2007 at 6:20 PM

So, Allah, does Hotair.com, now officially endorse Fred!?

Two different dates strike me as appropriate: 1st week of July and the last week of October. Heh.

tormod on March 27, 2007 at 6:27 PM

FrankJ, that was funny.

Allah, in the comments to the link you posted, someone actually wrote this:

I remember his comment on Law and Order

Thompson/Watts ’08!

Tim Burton on March 27, 2007 at 6:37 PM

Whatever date it is, he will most certainly do it for the most dramatic play AND it will kick royal butt.

bbz123 on March 27, 2007 at 6:39 PM

I hope he runs.

I wonder if Malkin will run when her babes are grown and flown out of the nest. Now that is a woman I’d vote for lol.

My bad … Tancredo has been outspoken from the getgo.

darwin on March 27, 2007 at 6:45 PM

Fred definitely has some good momentum going. This has to be a much better response than he anticipated a few weeks back. Run Fred, run.

liberty on March 27, 2007 at 6:53 PM

Hunter seems to be pretty tough, as well. Anyone know where Romney stands?

amerpundit on March 27, 2007 at 6:54 PM

This many months out, its nearly impossible to tell who will be the Republican nominee. At this moment, its all about the outside details, and what they’re saying now. When it gets down to their core principles, where they stand on issues, and what they’ve said in the past, that’s when we’ll know. Right now, our guess is as good as some guy on a deserted island.

amerpundit on March 27, 2007 at 6:56 PM

New term: “Fred!mentum!” ?

As to when he’ll announce…when is the tv series season over? lol.

tickleddragon on March 27, 2007 at 7:10 PM

amerpundit, have you looked at Fred!’s voting record? You can’t get any more sure about a person’s stance than how they’ve voted.

Don’t get me wrong, Friend. I’m not criticizing your stoicism, but who is it you’re excited about?

tickleddragon on March 27, 2007 at 7:15 PM

Don’t get me wrong, Friend. I’m not criticizing your stoicism, but who is it you’re excited about?

I don’t mean to be nasty, but if he’s President he won’t be voting, he’ll be managing. The most he’s managed was a Senate staff. I have very Conservative stances, and have the same views he does, on the issues. Will you elect me President in ’08? No, because I can’t run a country.

Who am I excited about? No one in particular. I’m scouring the field, not terribly impressed with anyone. I’ve been supportive of Giuliani, but only because I’ve seen the results of his work, and know he’s not only talked tough on issues, but has acted on them, as well.

amerpundit on March 27, 2007 at 7:20 PM

I like Hunter too.

Highrise on March 27, 2007 at 7:22 PM

And even on his voting record, there’s a few things, I’m concerned about.

amerpundit on March 27, 2007 at 7:24 PM

Of course, he will announce during the Fall Sweeps. When else would an actor announce?

redshirt on March 27, 2007 at 7:30 PM

No one knows who hunter is; that’s the problem. Say Duncan Hunter, people will say – was his partner McCall? That was a pretty good show.

lorien1973 on March 27, 2007 at 7:44 PM

I’ll take actor Thompson over actor Penn.

Dave Shay on March 27, 2007 at 7:46 PM

When?……Tax Day of course!

Limerick on March 27, 2007 at 8:07 PM

Well here’s something for every day for the next week. I’m sure he can find a suitable day and it might target a much needed demographic.

March 28 – Respect Your Cat Day
March 29 – Pickle Day
March 30 – I Am In Control Day aka Barbara Boxer Day
March 31 – National Sleep Apnea Day
April 1 – Sliced Bread Birthday (greatest candidate since…)
April 2 – Great Lovers Day
April 3 – Find a Rainbow Day (make the gay vote happy!)

As long as you don’t mention his wife works for the CIA!

DAMN DAMN DAMN

Looks like I’ve got 24 hours to get my affairs in order.

lorien1973 on March 27, 2007 at 5:39 PM

That’s okay, as long as Allah works in one of my favorite atrocious pickup lines: “I’m not Fred Flintstone, but I can make your bed rock!”

Fred! needs a VP with Malkins, and I am sure the kids would love VP mansion – then the White house in 2016!

I like that idea actually. There might be a lot to gain by not going in early, just to see your shine dull before the vote.

…and the lady is not just a pretty arm piece…look, but also read the text…

Entelechy on March 27, 2007 at 11:35 PM

When?

- 29-June – when he and Jeri married, or
- 19-August – his birthday

More likely July 04, as already mentioned.

“After two years in Washington, I often long for the realism and sincerity of Hollywood.” From a speech given by Thompson before the Commonwealth Club of California.

He makes 100,000 per episode. More for two episodes than for one year in the Senate, or something similar…still, should not be an impediment. There are other advantages.

Entelechy on March 27, 2007 at 11:48 PM

We get Tom Selleck to loan him his Quigley Down Under outfit and Fred can’t loose!

thebookkeeper on March 28, 2007 at 12:03 AM

He’s committed to one more stint for Paul Harvey beyond this week, not entirely sure of the dates. But he won’t announce before that. Otherwise I’d be tempted to throw down for Tax Day.

Kai, did you pick June 6 because it’s D-Day? Good day for an invasion of integrity into the race…
