Reporter poses as war supporter, infiltrates Portland protest

That Portland rally’s turned out to be one of the choicest cows on the news farm. Just one red-meat cutlet after another.

[I]n a town that claims to believe in free speech, WW wanted to see what happens to those who don’t parrot the popular line.

What followed was an hour and a half of ridicule, threats and condescension—peppered by a few high-fives from antiwar marchers for “having balls.”…

The most common suggestion was to enlist in the military and go fight the war. Dozens of protesters branded me a “chicken hawk,” as did a local blogger who posted photos after the rally.

But some also clearly relished the opportunity to engage the enemy. Lines formed of people waiting to get a piece. They questioned U.S. foreign policy and my morality like they were talking to a stubborn schoolkid. They suggested I “do some reading.”

“A lot of people are brainwashed by Fox News and Rush Limbaugh, and he’s one of them,” Peter Wylie, a 59-year-old photographer, told WW intern Nicholas Deshais, who followed me as a reporter to help with chronicling what happened.

Others were more welcoming, shaking hands and thanking me for showing up.

Update: Good lord.

I found this reporters balls very impressive to go into that cesspool.

I think he is lucky that he didn’t get attacked and hurt. Many, many, nutroots there.

NEMETI IN SYRACUSE on March 26, 2007 at 8:15 PM

He probably required decontamination afterwards…

From the protest in Portland last weekend, one protester defecated on a burning flag. The photo has turned up and is saved at the web site of local radio talk show host, Victoria Taft. Victoria Taft

Many, many, nutroots there.

And they’ve apparently learned to use fire.

Reading the comments at the end of the reporter’s story I have concluded that the anti-war protesters are victims and they acted as they did because the reporter incited them by expressing a differing opinion. According to the commentators, the protestors really are peaceful and tolerant, but the reporter showing support for the war forced the protestors to verbally accost him. It’s not their fault; they are not responsible for their actions. But then, they never are, are they?

I was hugged by hippie chicks, handed free DVDs and hit on by a man in a pink fairy suit.

I didn’t know Sean Penn had a pink fairy suit…….

How bad are they when it’s not a hundred to one in their favor?

Used to be a time, back in the day back in the old neighborhood, when if you even so much as attempted this kind of shit, people would be piling out of houses and alleyways to stomp a puddle in your ass.

Seems these days, they run the streets, and we’re the bitches , reduced to whining on Internet boards.

Don’t know about y’all, but I’m still old-school, and anybody who don’t understand what that’s about will find out real quick if they come in my face and attempt any such shit.

tomk59 on March 26, 2007 at 10:19 PM

Are these the same punks chanting “It’s not just Bush, it’s the Soldiers too” as they burn the American flag? That’s a strange way to ’support the Troops’.

Wavin’ their little Che flags … if Che were alive and in charge, anybody who protested anything would be shot dead. And if Bush is so eeeeevil, why are these people still breathin’?

“… learned to use fire” hahahaha Good one Frank. Protesting: So easy, a caveman can do it.

I quite enjoyed the comments section.

“HOW DARE YOU PROVOKE US!!!”

Yeah, you’ve pretty much hit the nail on the head. When only 20 some percent of the country supports the war, the anti-war folks have run of the streets. Even if you don’t support their tactics, most people support their message and hence you are forced to whine on blog message boards.

Am I the only one sick of seeing the red meat graphic?

freya4freedom on March 27, 2007 at 2:16 PM

Lizzie and others, the photo has been taken down due to copyright considerations. Hopefully, you already saw it or saved it.

The incident is also mentioned in an article by the Portland Tribune, Rudeness Mars peace message

In left leaning Portland, that is only considered “rude.”

LewWaters on March 27, 2007 at 3:47 PM

The lesson learned here is for normal right wing folks to attend these anti-war marches with camera and notepad in hand. I’ve been to all of them here in Washington, DC. The best thing you can do is to infiltrate their madness, take photos of them acting like fools, and post it on the Internet for the world to see. The general public has no idea how foolish and hateful these demonstrations are, nor do they have any idea of the kind of people who organize and attend them. There should never be a major demonstration anywhere without dozens of conservative infiltrators documenting it for the world to view and debate.

Tantor on March 27, 2007 at 4:47 PM

These people in these marches are not Peace protesters, unless they are protesting against peace.

They are not peaceful either.

Why don’t those who support the troops and oppose Islamofascist Jihadi violence organize marches and draw a few million demonstrators?

Perhaps the difference is that left wing, fifth column, communist, socialist anti-US demonstrators do not have responsibilities, no jobs, no family to take care of, and that is why they are able to go out and “protest,” while those who support the troops and who oppose Islamofascist Jihadi thugs have responsibilities, jobs, families, etc., which is why they are doing what they must while the leftists have free time to go from town to town screaming, hurling invectives and obscenities, and having fun with their fellow “Protesters.”

Nothing in Portland ever surprises me. I’ve spent many a dinner party there out numbered and shouted down by my in-laws and their friends.
