Div II championship went down today in Springfield. Winona was 35-0, defending national champs, and riding a 56-game winning streak. Barton was 31-5 and had won its last four tournament games by the following scores: 86-85, 76-65, 83-81 (OT), 80-79.
Winona knocked them off in the Elite Eight last year and led here, 74-67, with 45 seconds left. The clip starts with a few highlights from earlier in the game, but keep an eye out for that score; that’s when things get good, culminating in what may be the greatest choke since Fred Brown saw James Worthy open near halfcourt in the 1982 Div I championship game. That was freakin awesome! I would have kept running too after that last lay-up with all that damn adrenaline pumping! Ahh, March, April, and June, us B-ballers favorite time of the year…

I don’t know why I forgot May, it’s late…haha

Haave any studies been done as to whether Republicans or Democrats make better sports players? I mean watching John Kerry and Al Gore toss a football around should be enough to squash the debate, but just wondering?

Can’t. Stop. Watching. This is golden!

I love it. But the best basketball story for me in the past year or so is that autistic kid knocking down all those three pointers in his first and last high school game. I can’t remember where I saw the video, but it had me in tears.
Regardless, I’m impressed with Allah’s appreciation for sports drama. Maybe he can show highlights of Baylor winning the BCS next year.

Saw this live waiting for the OSU-MSU game. Fell off the couch. What guts to go for the layup instead of pulling up for the riskier jump shot. Pure gold.

Not sure I’d call the Fred Brown thing a “choke.” I’d call it a mental lapse. Perhaps it’s just semantics. To me, a choke is blowing foul shots to tie or win a game (like the Duke woman’s player just did today with 0.1 seconds in the loss to Rutgers. Or the Memphis kid blowing 3 free throws a few years ago, sending Louisville to the win).

I love this time of year!

AWESOME! I was watching the first half and thought it was over. Best game since my Jayhawks were eliminated

Fantastic play. The lay-up is the better shot, if he stops for the setshot or slows for the jumper they can be batted away, he’s only got a step on the defenders.

I actually live in Winona, and while I am very proud of my hometown team, I am glad that this was such a good game that it actually got posted here, You see, Winona is a very small city by most accounts., We have 3 Colleges, not that you can tell by my spelling ability, 2 of which are state run, which would account more for my spelling, but many here are proud of Winona State for even getting to the finals last year, to win was huge. This is a city of 28,000. We are not a suburb of a big city. For us, to have the winning streak we have had is very good esteem. To have someone beat us, this close, well, it is a great story. But an even bigger story I think is how we came to be what we are.

Think there will be rioting and burning of cars in celebration? Nah, I didn’t think so either.
Thanks for posting the link… Div II is great fun.
Madness indeed…

I caught the last two minutes of this game. It was clearly the most exciting two minutes of basketball this season. What a come back. Barton never quit, especially that gutsy guard that put his team on his back. Awesome.

Where is Winona?? That is my northeast bias showing. I think what makes this more dramatic was that Winona was undefeated going into this final. Winona beat a then undfeated Bently College in the D2 tournement. The only reason I know this is that Bently is located a couple towns over and has had some coverage in the local paper here.

I think the choke was by the Winona coach not calling time out and settling his boys down when Barton started to rally.

I was a student there back when it used to be called Atlantic Christian College back in the early 80’s. Its amazing how much has changed in 25 years.
The town (Wilson) has gone completely nuts since the win.

Watched it live (nothing better to do), and was actually rooting for Barton, since it was their first trip to the finals. It took me a minute to pick my jaw up off the floor after that last shot. NBA’ers need to learn from these guys just what the game is all about. It’s a little thing called “heart.”

As a year and half “graduate” of
WinoWinona State 88-90 I find this video reminder of the event very troubling and I think it should be removed since it is an offensive form of propaganda.Okay okay…settle down. Congrats to Barton. They never quit or rolled over. Congrats to WSU on their impressive win streak.
