The best home defense weapon is the 12 gauge shotgun loaded with 00 buckshot. Remingtons 870 and Mossbergs 590 are best for the home protection task.

I personally own a Mossberg Persuader 590 for home use and really like the new Ruger P345 compact 45 auto for mobile protection.

Thanks for the correction. I'm a noob - these are my first guns. I love it though. Mother-daughter time now means a trip to the range and four boxes each. :-)

Laura,

Slight nitpick…

You would be correct if you said a Glock does not have an external thumb activated safety switch.

However

Glocks do have 3 safeties to protect against….

1. Unintended trigger operation
2. Striker Safety (firing pin can not hit primer unless trigger is pulled).
3. Drop Safety - Gun will not go off if it is dropped.

That said the main safety on a Glock is the holders brain and his/her own finger.

Rule #2 with all firearms is…

ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.

I keep my G21 locked and loaded ready to go. I have never had an accidental or negligent discharge with it.

               Glock 23 locked & loaded.

Ya don't touch the trigger unless willing to shot. . .
I don't want to fumble with a safety if I EVER
     have to use it.

Ruger & Taurus make .17 revolvers.I prefer the 22,have a Taurus 94 stainless,it'll shoot the Agula Colibri loads (primer-powered,super quiet for backyard pests),shotshells (small snakes & mice) & of course all other 22 loads, except the Mag.
For something different, check out North American Arms' mini-revolvers.

Well said and good advise. As a member of the NRA, I'd add a visit to their website as well.

And Frantic Freddie, I think I'll take your advise and look for .22cal revolver! Does anyone have .17cal??? That's on my list as well. I hear they may be a little more accurate than the .22mag rifle (turtle popper)!

It is not Bush but Karl Rove that is the magnificent bastard that makes the world turn as you described.

That being said you point still has some merit.

Isn't all this George W. Bush's fault, the guy who is a stupid idiot, yet is so devious, such as criminal, diabolical genius that he masterminded wars, taking over countries, attacks against our own nation and made it look like Islamic Jihadis did it, masterminded the engineering of his electoral victories, and so on?

Yeah. Chalk another one up to George W. Bush, who created Hurricane Katrina, destroyed New Orleans with his super human powers, attacking only black people (what a diabolical, all-powerful genius, and what amazing powers!), and manipulating everything that happens.

Truly, not a leaf falls even a fraction of an inch from a tree without George W. Bush's will, nor does a person take a single breath, or bat an eye lash without George W. Bush's Supreme Power and Knowledge!

Don’t get a Glock if you care about safety - there isn’t one. (Unless you keep it unloaded, which is of course useless.) Actually the lack of a safety is one of the reasons I like it, but then my daughter’s a teenager and she learned to shoot when I did.

Oh....I forgot the rifle recommendations. An SKS or AKM for areas where GFW don't bother you, or a lever action rifle in 30-30, 44 or 45LC in other areas where EVIL guns are not allowed. Lever actions made by winchester are seriously overpriced these days (no longer made), but you can get one made by Taurus that will do the job quite well.

Buck, to answer your question to what gun to get...it depends. Are you going to use it only in your house? Do you live in a house or apartment? Are you going to practice a lot or just empty a box of ammo and then stash it? To wit:
1. Shotgun. A 12 gauge shotgun loaded with #1 buck or #00 buck is a fairly decent killer at under 30 yards. It is also preferable in close knit neighborhoods and apartments. Contrary to popular belief, all firearms can penetrate sheet rock. Know your back stop and your fields of fire. con: shotguns are fairly long and can be very intimidating in the hands of a small person. If the gun is too powerful, you will not practice. You can always buy a youth model or a 20 gauge if you are smaller. prices around 200 dollars for a good mossberg.

2. Rifle: A military cartridge chambered rifle would make an excellent single weapon for any household. The cartridges are specifically designed to kill 2 legged predators and under 100 yards, even the m4 is fairly effective. cons: Serious long range penetration. If you live in a suburb or apartment do not get one!!!, Price: between 150 for an SKS to 1400 dollars for a serious Socom II.

3. Pistol: Anything above .32 caliber will make a good defense weapon. Dont believe the super duper killer rounds hype. Unless you hit a critical area (CNS or heart) you will have to fire multiple rounds while moving to cover. These are pistol rounds. not powerful enough to dismember or instantly kill anyone (unless you hit the aforementioned areas) Great to carry ad conceal. inexpensive ammunition. cons: YOU MUST PRACTICE!!!! An automatic weapon has safeties and levers and such. You have to practice loading, unloading and deploying until it becomes second nature. At 3 in the morning is no time to try to remember what lever thingy you need to push to take the safety off. price: 200-2000 dollars. Taurus and Glocks are the best bang for your buck right now. Springfield XDs are a bit more expensive but worth it.

4. Revolver: The benefits of a pistol with few of the drawbacks. No levers or thingys to remember. You can load it, put it in a drawer for 100 years, pull it out and pull the trigger and it works. Low ammunition capacity makes them less useful than autos, but preferred for people who wont practice. .38 - .44 caliber are very effective. Taurus revolvers, specially in stainless steel are the most bang for your buck

5. TRAINING: the best weapon you can possibly get is useless unless you know how to use it. Get some training, your life might depend on it. Suarez International is the best training academy for civies in the world today.

We had crime go up here to. No murders that I know of but evacuated homes being broken into, generators and other items being stolen in broad day light and a little price gouging.
Stealing is a violation of the property-owner's rights. "Price gouging" is a made-up crime, which is itself a violation of the rights of people to do business with whom they want under mutually-agreed terms.

It's another attempt to interfere with the laws of supply and demand, which not only doesn't solve the problem it pretends to address, and actually makes it worse.

After a hurricane hit Florida, an enterprising individual bought a bunch of generators up north, rented a truck, drove down to the affected area and started selling generators to people who were quite happy to pay his prices. Then the cops put him in jail and the truck full of generators in impound.

How it can be a crime for him to sell generators that wouldn't even have been in the state without his efforts is beyond my comprehension. But I'm sure that a 'compassionate' person will be happy to explain it to me, just like one jumped up to defend the minimum wage a few days ago.

I'm saying it won't happen twice, AZ. We didn't get back until 10 days after that storm on an advanced permit, and the first thing we did was get hold of some chainsaws and handguns. We barely put the chainsaws down for two weeks, and it turned out we didn't need the guns but we were glad to have them. I know people who did need them. It was eerie around here. Dead quiet, not even any birds, trees stripped bare if they were still standing... The rage everybody felt when we heard about the gun grab was unbelievable. Most people had never felt that unsafe before, and to learn that the ability to defend ourselves was being taken away, well, the mood was ugly. And still is. Next time, if there is one, someone is going to get hurt.

Good call on the empty cylinder thing. Transfer bar safeties (or similar) are used on most modern revolvers.

Sorry guys, I don't own any revlovers, you can tell how up to date I am! For handguns, just semi-autos, Colts, Walthers, Browning, H-K.

Using Dhemocrat logic...

We need to stop all this crime right now! We're going to redeploy all of the police officers to Texas THAT will achieve peace in New Orleans.

No prob,Bartender (love the nic,ex-pro musician, lotta time in bars).

I have a Model 10-7 from the 80s,pre-dates transfer bars, but it's still safe to carry with all chambers loaded.

The wife & I have a fine arrangement: I prefer my 1911 & shoot it better than a revolver.She don't like the autos,but she'll nail the 10-ring every time with the 686.
Bottom line is,shoot what you shoot well & are comfortable with.

I agree with the need for a gun. I have my 60-year-old mother carry one with her at all times in L.A.

My wife carries a stainless GP100 Ruger in .357.

But nothing is more proactive against crime than two 100lb+ dogs.

Can't carry them in your jacket though.

A queston for you Glock 23 owners. Have you seen any case failures yet?

With new ammo, never. Reloads from a G23 ... yep. A gunsmith explained some technical detail to me, but it boiled down to - Don't reload cases fired from a G23.

There is absolutely zero, repeat ZERO, chance that we’re going to surrender our guns if anyone asks. You have no idea how even people like us, who were not gun owners before Katrina, received the news of those confiscations. Mad doesn’t begin to cover it.

Laura on March 24, 2007 at 1:44 PM

I disagree. Citizens in NOLA and elsewhere handed them right over. There were no firefights to sieze them.

Americans in large portions have abdicated their responsibility for self government. Moreover, most citizens do not understand that our rights are inalienable. You can't even give up your rights.

Remember the so called "assault weapon ban". They want to bring it back. If Americans want to remain free, they will stop things like this -> http://www.gunowners.org/a012307.htm

To quote Jeffery Snyder, "We are a nation of cowards". I think people will give them up their weapons by the hundreds.
