They need the money by March 31st because that’s when the first quarter fundraising reports are due; the bigger her war chest, the more inevitable she looks, and thus the easier it is for her going forward. Or is it? The appeal, such as it is, of the “Big Sister”/1984 ad is that it’s a rebuke to her inevitability. If the story on April 1 is that she’s swimming in cash, it’ll only make Obama seem more “authentic” and populist and her more phony and establishment by comparison.
And given that the Clintons are suddenly skirmishing with the nutroots, that’s not an image they necessarily want to nurture right now. Exit quotation: “It’s just not fair to say that people who voted for the resolution wanted war.”

That or political consultants and campaign pros will drool at the prospect of carving themselves at a big chunk of Clinton Cash. I’m not convinced that this is the year of the Nutroot. Popular activism will be more important this election, but lets not forget most people aren’t nutroots. They’ll have higher effect, but won’t run the show. Traditional campaign will rule this cycle still.
