Open thread: Goracle on Capitol Hill to talk about the weather; Update: Heart-ache — Gore refuses Inhofe’s energy ethics pledge; Update: Video added

C-SPAN 3 will have both hearings, first the undercard at 9:30 before a House subcommittee on global warming and then the main event at 2:30 before the Senate Environment and Public Works committee, where he and crusty GW skeptic James Inhofe will finally square off. Neither my cable company nor Bryan’s carries C-SPAN 3, so we’re at the mercy of Fox and CNN. If you’re hot to watch, and no doubt some of you are, you can do so over the web. Keep us posted on the goings-on in the comments.

Here’s what to expect in the a.m.:

Gore begins the day in the House, where he will face Energy Chairman John D. Dingell, a Democrat from the auto-industry state of Michigan, who has resisted federal increases in fuel-efficiency standards. Dingell also invited Lomborg, a Danish political scientist and author of “The Skeptical Environmentalist,” who has argued that combating AIDS and poverty may carry a greater social value than tackling climate change.

Republicans have already signaled that they’ll be waiting with tough questions. Two senior GOP members, Rep. Joe L. Barton of Texas and former House speaker J. Dennis Hastert of Illinois, want Gore to use his 30-minute opening statement to address a comment last year that “it is appropriate to have an over-representation of factual presentations” in his lecture.

“What is your motive for the ‘over-representation?’ ” Barton and Hastert asked in a letter delivered to Gore on Tuesday. “Are you worried that your issue must compete for attention and resources with those other global issues that are already compelling and do not need Hollywood hyperbole?”

And here’s a taste of what he’ll face in the p.m. It’s Inhofe versus CNN anchor Miles O’Brien from last October. His press guy put out a statement last night essentially accusing Gore of thinking his shinola don’t stink, to coin a phrase. Should be fun.

Update: “Those who believe all his garbage are going to be excited to death and the rest of us are going to ignore it.”

Update: Fox is carrying it. The Gorebot is late to the hearing, reportedly because he doesn’t want to suffer the indignity of listening to the GOP’s opening statement. Republicans now say they’ll waive their opening statement — in return for five extra minutes of questioning.

Update: Inhofe’s press guy says the transcript of Gore’s prepared remarks was finally delivered to the Senate — at 9:29 a.m., fully one minute before the House hearing opened and 23 hours and 59 minutes after he’d promised to deliver them.

Update: Tonight he dines in hell!

Update: You think Inhofe is enjoying this or what?

“There are hundreds of thousands of people who adore you and would follow your example by reducing their energy usage if you did. Don’t give us the run-around on carbon offsets or the gimmicks the wealthy do,” Senator Inhofe told Gore.

“Are you willing to make a commitment here today by taking this pledge to consume no more energy for use in your residence than the average American household by one year from today?” Senator Inhofe asked…

Gore refused to take the pledge.

Update: Here’s a little post-pledge video that’s making the rounds.

AL Gore compares his efforts to the movie “300″
Posted on 03/21/2007 7:24:08 AM PDT by Maneesh

I’m watching the hearings on Global Warming on C-SPAN and The Goracle is testifying. He just compared what people leading the global warming crusade to what the Spartans did in the movie “300″ to save democracy ! Gore truly believes that this so called crisis is as serious as the existential threat faced by the Spartans against the Persians in ancient Greece. This is total arrogance and delusional behaviour.

Esssentially his whole testimony is creating the emotions to respond to global warming. There is no discussion at all about the science of global warming.

THIS IS MADNESS!!!!! THIS IS BLASPHEMEY!!!!!!

He doesn’t truly believe it; he just wants the rest of us to truly believe it.

Kokonut on March 21, 2007 at 4:35 PM

Every time the Goracle gets to something fairly technical, he keeps saying “that’s above my paygrade”. With the truckloads of cash he’s hauling in globetrotting his dog and pony show around the world, I’m hard-pressed to believe anything is above his paygrade.

db on March 21, 2007 at 4:36 PM

Love Sen. Larry Craig! Hitting Gore hard on this nuclear technology and basically blamed Gore for setting back nuclear technology during the Clinton/Gore admin.

heh heh..

Kokonut on March 21, 2007 at 4:38 PM

Larry Craig says to Gore that he is proud of what America has done in terms of technology and clean technology development and that we shouldn’t be ashamed of our accomplishment.

Did I get that right?

Kokonut on March 21, 2007 at 4:40 PM

Sorry Kokonut, I had to take a phone call… (the darned day job cutting in on my leisure time)

My point about the drilling in the Gulf is that I think it is insanity that China and Cuba can drill off our shores and not companies of the U.S.A.

I am aware of the oil shale industry. I do believe that extracting oil from shale is much more expensive than just drilling for oil off our coast. That was the point I was trying to make. In addition, what makes you think that the environmental whackos won’t come after the oil shale industry as well?

I KNOW that the U.S. has vast energy stores. The problem is that our gov’t will not let us tap them. Hence, we remain locked into a deal with the Middle East devil.

Here c9omes Max Baucus, drooling and slobbering on Al.

So now Gore’s talking about an ‘dirty energy’ tax. Who does that benefit? The people that can afford green energy.

Every time I see Lamar Alexander, I think of him in his lumberjack shirt, running for Prez and not knowing the price of milk.

Matticus Finch on March 21, 2007 at 4:50 PM

Babs,

Quite the contrary. Extraction of oil shale using new technology can be made cheaper than drilling for oil offshore. If oil prices are high, then there are great incentives to develop better technology that is efficient on extracting oil from shale. No?

If oil prices are high, then there are great incentives to develop better technology that is efficient on extracting oil from shale. No?

I agree with your statement. However, there is a price per barrell at which oil shale becomes profitable. This price per barrell is, correct me if I am wrong, exceeds $70/barrell. This price expects gas prices to be above $3/gallon. That is fine but, I would much rather extract oil from the coast of FL for less than $25/barrell and pay $2/gal for gas.

Babs on March 21, 2007 at 5:00 PM

You talk 50-100 years ahead. We can’t even get an acurate weather report!

Way to go Sen. Thomas!

Babs on March 21, 2007 at 5:02 PM

“If oil prices are high, then there are great incentives to develop better technology that is efficient on extracting oil from shale. No?”

No, there are then more incentives to pollute our Mother Earth fragile ecosystem with more and more polluting CO2 atoms that are different from the ones you and I breathe.

The Earth is sick and it needs a good long enema.

benrand on March 21, 2007 at 5:03 PM

You choose to become carbon neutral because you pay for the carbon you use. What about the people of Wyoming?

I have to say, Thomas landed it!

Babs on March 21, 2007 at 5:04 PM

Benrand, not if we use “carbon sequestration” whether it’s for oil, coal, or natural gas production and uses.

Kokonut on March 21, 2007 at 5:07 PM

Yeah, but carbon futures are going to carbon offset all of the carbon sequestration.

Was Al looking at his stock portfolio in between questions?

That greedy little douche.

Babs on March 21, 2007 at 5:15 PM

“Key word: significant
Well, how do you define that? Even if the entire 0.6 deg of warming was entirely due to anthropogenic emissions, would that be “significant”? What if only half of it or a quarter of it is… say 0.15 deg?

DaveS on March 21, 2007 at 2:39 PM”

What does it signify?

Zetterson on March 21, 2007 at 2:42 PM

To be statistically significant, it would need to be 2 times sigma above average. But there is a huge debate over what the “average” temperature is. Over what time period do we measure? Over what substrate, the ocean? The Desert? Over a city? Over asphalt? And at what elevation do we measure? At ground level? At the top of a mountain? At 1500 ft?
It’s all BS.

The world is changing-now EVOLVE you Darwinist a-holes, or PERISH! Quit trying to play God! EVOLVE!

NTWR on March 21, 2007 at 5:16 PM

Thanks to Hot Air for this open thread. I feel a bit better now…

Babs on March 21, 2007 at 5:16 PM

Babs,

We do both. Both on land and underwater in the Gulf of Mexico, for example. The issue is to become energy independent and move away from foreign oil dependence so yahoos won’t accuse the U.S. of “invading” a country for its oil. If we have a bad hurricane year and knocks off or destroys some of the oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico which will cease oil production for a year or so, we’d have the shale oil to work with, for example.

Funny that you mentioned drilling oil off of the Florida coast. Senator Larry Craig and Senator Byron Dorgan has just recently proposed a bill for offshore drilling that would allow U.S. companies to drill in waters close to Cuba as well as Florida, Virginia, Georgia and North and South Carolina.

Kokonut on March 21, 2007 at 5:18 PM

Hey AllahPundit, where’s the Digg button? Inhofe’s pledge is HILARIOUS. I doubt we’ll see it in the news. How long will it take the Diggbats to bury this thread?

theovermind99 on March 21, 2007 at 5:26 PM

Kind of ironic to see Allah talk about Gore’s pledge refusal and immediately below that an ad by Nature Canada “Let’s stop global warming” with a picture of two cuddly polar bears playing around on the snow.

Allah…gone soft or what?

Kokonut on March 21, 2007 at 5:29 PM

““Are you willing to make a commitment here today by taking this pledge to consume no more energy for use in your residence than the average American household by one year from today?” Senator Inhofe asked…

Gore refused to take the pledge.”"

I like Inhofe’s idea there, but I’d have taken it one step further:

I’d have asked Gore to pledge his personal profits from his Carbon Offset sales business scam, his Occidental petroleum stocks and his zinc mine etc. to go to some worthy cause.

LegendHasIt on March 21, 2007 at 5:30 PM

In one bold stroke Inhofe exposed the Goracle for the hypocritical scam artist he is. Bravo!

TheBigOldDog on March 21, 2007 at 5:38 PM

Kokonut - You are obviously in the energy trade. I defer to you… I just don’t think we will solve our energy problem with oil shale. Yes, a combination of drilling off our coasts and, gasp, drilling in Alaska will buy us time to produce alternative energy.

I would like to leave this with the thought that alternative energy is not as simple as some make it out to be. I offer the wind farm off the coast of Cape Cod as evidence… Alternative energy is just fine, as long as you don’t employ it in my eyesight…

Babs on March 21, 2007 at 5:39 PM

Please, please . . . sombody stick a pin in Gore and deflate that big bag of hot air. It would probably add to global warming but it would be well worth it.

And how far do you think that legislation will go???

Babs on March 21, 2007 at 5:45 PM

Please correct me if I’m wrong but don’t the carbon credits work like this … Gorbatron uses as much energy as he wants
and then buys so called credits from someone who could use more energy but for whatever reason isn’t … what a load … no less energy is used, but rich folks get to wear the “holier than thou” mantle while doing asbolutely zilch, nothing, nada … combine this with his pledge refusal and if you don’t see ELITIST, I fear you are beyond hope….

Paul

pbary on March 21, 2007 at 5:57 PM

Babs,

That depends on which will is greater. Have foreign oil dependency along with the NIMBY syndrome, or have oil independency and NITBY (Not in their (foreign) back yards). Either that or they’ll have to start choosing nuclear plants (even the little ones).

:)

Kokonut on March 21, 2007 at 5:58 PM

That was great!

Now if only these guys would get serious about improving our energy infrastructure. Build Nukes, drill off-shore, increase the electrical grid capacity, give incentives/tax breaks for residential solar power and solar heating, develop geo-thermal and hydropower systems. We don’t need carbon-indulgences, we need reduced regulation.

Iblis on March 21, 2007 at 5:58 PM

Paul, then all of that get offset by China’s ungodly amount of continuing and increasing polluation of the global climate skies. Heck, even soot from China floated over to America and sullied our soils and car tops.

Kokonut on March 21, 2007 at 6:00 PM

Babs, not energy trade. Just a M.S. degree in Geology and a healthy interest in everything that’s oil and gas.

right2bright on March 21, 2007 at 4:12 PM

I agree with you right2bright that man-made Global Warming is not happening. But I think you may have got your number wrong on the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. According to Professor Tim Ball, Dept. of Climatology University of Winnipeg, from the documentary, “The Great Global Warming Swindle”, the amount of CO2 in the air is about .054%, which would equate to .00054 of the atmosphere.

You can read some of the points made in the video here.

I honestly feel his hiring is a desperation move. Everyone knows Hillary is unelectable at this point, yet she’ll clearly be the Dems’ nominee. What perfect timing this hiring was!

RightWinged on March 22, 2007 at 4:55 AM

Hey, Al, need a cooling/warming history lesson? I found it on the internet which you founded so it must be true!

“A review of more than 200 climate studies led by researchers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics has determined that the 20th century is neither the warmest century nor the century with the most extreme weather of the past 1000 years. The review also confirmed that the Medieval Warm Period of 800 to 1300 A.D. and the Little Ice Age of 1300 to 1900 A.D. were worldwide phenomena not limited to the European and North American continents. While 20th century temperatures are much higher than in the Little Ice Age period, many parts of the world show the medieval warmth to be greater than that of the 20th century.”

They were liberal before, but under Kaplan they basically became Al Jazeera in english. I think you’re right about the reasons for the hiring and Hillary’s electability.

THOMPSON/INHOFE IN 2008

silenced majority on March 23, 2007 at 8:49 AM

I posted this question under Allah Panders (AP) fake headline about Fred Thompson defending Gore and am now posting it here. Here goes:

Gore’s a FUH KING idiot. Can I say that??? How different is it than using astericks such as F*cking???

The real question that should have been asked of Gore,”King of the Fuh’s”, during his Senate showboat is: If everyone followed his example, instead of following his enviromania preaching, and had $3000 a month electricity bills, but say it’s okay because one is carbon neutral due to carbon offsets, Would the planet be better off - or worse off???. I mean, does he really believe that by being “carbon neutral” absolves him of being more responsible for the death of planet earth than the average household, or two, or three, or four???

Not that I believe this whoey, just see what his answer would be. Like the post yesterday, IT IS THE SUN, man.
