Video: Silky Pony says his energy bill is between $300-400

Not for the whole estate, mind you. Just for the palatial, 10-room/6.5 bathroom/two garage 10,000-squre-foot manor house. The 15,000-square-foot “recreation building,” with its swimming pool, basketball and squash courts, bedroom, bathrooms, and kitchen is still under construction.

So, big difference.

The relevant bit comes at 2:40. I’m skeptical given the fact that I pay over $100 a month to keep my one-bedroom apartment bearably hot instead of unbearably, but then I’m in NYC and he’s in North Carolina and, after all, I’m not “carbon neutral.” I really do hope he’s telling the truth, though. If he’s lying then we get a scalp we don’t really need and he buys some bullshinola offsets from himself to atone and that’s that. But if he’s telling the truth, if it’s really possible to power a home that large so cheaply, then how much worse does this look for the Goracle?

Thanks to Michael S. for the tip. Click the image to watch.

Here’s a website that lets you figure out your carbon footprint. The national average per person is 18. Mine is 10.

But then again, I’m not a “populist crusader.”

Or was that the 2004 Edwards?

Slublog on March 20, 2007 at 2:21 PM

Is this his gas OR electric bill? I think there are even more omissions than the ones you mentioned.

- The Cat

MirCat on March 20, 2007 at 2:22 PM

Mine is 17, but now I know how to raise it so we get better veggies.

BTW, anyone actually calculate the Earth’s capacity for USING co2?

- The Cat

MirCat on March 20, 2007 at 2:26 PM

That has to be his winter rates.

Once the 90+ degree/90% humidity North Carolina summer hits, his bill skyrockets like everyone else.

The Ugly American on March 20, 2007 at 2:27 PM

Here is my home in Monroe North Carolina and my electric bill runs between $75 and $120 a month. And I keep myself comfortable all day and night. I don’t save energy….ever! So, it’s possible it’s not all that much. In Chicago, where I lived previous my electric bill for a house like mine would be well over $200 a month.

Capitalist Infidel on March 20, 2007 at 2:29 PM

Maybe it’s his portion of the bill that’s $300. Then one portion for the wife, a few for the servants, the housekeeper, the gardener, the pool boy… oops, don’t forget the kids!, the cat, several guests a month, political consultants. Let’s see, $12,300 divided by 41, thats… $300!

a4g on March 20, 2007 at 2:30 PM

I’m sorry, he’s lieing.

We’ve already seen the ACTUAL BILLS!!!

And as to his bogus Carbon Neutral stance… he’s paying so he can pollute more… its an Indulgance, just like the Catholic Church back in the DARK Ages.

Romeo13 on March 20, 2007 at 2:31 PM

Of course, I live in Orange County, CA. So $300 is a light month for me…

a4g on March 20, 2007 at 2:32 PM

ELITIST SNOB I get carbon offsets, big freekin deal. I guess that the people in Africa really give a dam about your offsets like Silky and Gorebot, plain BS pure and simple as the river flows.

armylawyer on March 20, 2007 at 2:36 PM

I’m in New England. Gas and Elec run about $600-800 in the winter, about $400 in the summer, and about $300 in the fall and spring when there is barely any heating or cooling needed.

Rich on March 20, 2007 at 2:39 PM

Well, I figured out my carbon footprint at the site and was completely honest, and my footprint was 24. Then, just for fun, I changed my location to China and guess what–My number was reduced to 18. It’s a miracle, I tell ya.

To be fair, the housing section was different. I live in a detached house here in the states, but in China, the largest choice was “family house” so I chose that. Still, something’s fishy. I’m gonna go play around there some more.

IrishEi on March 20, 2007 at 2:40 PM

Don’t forget the extra hundreds of thousands it cost to make the home “five star energy efficient,” the solar panels, etc. And for what that doesn’t cover, there’s always the enviro-sin-absolving offsets.

Edwards truly is leading the way for this America from the other one.

askheaves on March 20, 2007 at 2:40 PM

I highly doubt he’s heating his house with electricity, so $300-400/month for a North Carolina winter (much of it spent in Washington) MIGHT be possible. It also is new construction, so it would have the latest and greatest in energy conservation.

That having been said, his total energy bill is nowhere near the $300-400 he claims.

steveegg on March 20, 2007 at 2:43 PM

OK. That BP carbon footprint site is just bogus. I filled in the exact same information except changed the country and here are the results.

USA – 24
China – 18
France – 9.2

Now, perhaps France is very low because they use a lot of nuclear power. But what about China?! Surely it should be higher there because nearly everything is coal-powered. I’m calling BS. I think it’s rigged to lay more guilt on Americans.

4 words, AP – Intel Core 2 Duo. You won’t have to run the A/C during the winter then ;-)

Seriously, a couple of questions -
- About how old is your apartment?
- How are you heating it?

steveegg on March 20, 2007 at 2:47 PM

IrishEi – You think?

steveegg on March 20, 2007 at 2:47 PM

And funny, I sure didn’t see any Solar Panels in the pictures??? Where are they??? OFFSITE?

Romeo13 on March 20, 2007 at 2:47 PM

I don’t have heating costs here, but I try to contribute by grilling everyday. Average electric, about $60-$70 per month. Doing all I can to contribute, but it never seems enough. I compost everything, but I haven’t started burning yet. So, I am a thinker.

Any ideas on how to get a bigger carbon footprint?
I’m feeling impotent and inadequate due to small CF envy.

Kini on March 20, 2007 at 2:49 PM

I bet that “$300-400″ doesn’t even cover the electric bill for his hair dryer and makeup mirror.

ReubenJCogburn on March 20, 2007 at 2:50 PM

18.58 But they didn’t ask about the four workstations, two laptops, and four servers I have at the house.

E L Frederick (Sniper One) on March 20, 2007 at 2:54 PM

My Carbon Footprint is 6 tonnes. Apparently I’m well below the US average of 18 tonnes per year.

So, as of right now, I am selling carbon offsets.

For $50 per ton, you can purchase my unused carbon. Do you need a bit more than 18 tons a year? No problem. Buy extra from me. Then I can feel average and the rest of you don’t have to feel so bad. :)

Ah the joys of sharing a studio apartment and not having a car. I do more for the environment than most of those greenies could ever dream of doing with their Prius’ and yet, I do it without being a nut job. And no, I’m not at all advocating that cramming 2 people into a studio apartment is a good idea. I think the murder rate would go up (not that PETA/Greenpeace would mind).

JadeNYU on March 20, 2007 at 2:55 PM

Here’s more results–using exactly the same parameters:

Australia – 21
United Kingdom – 13

Well, either you have to be a member of the EU to be a good earthling, or more likely, you have to have signed on to Kyoto.

IrishEi on March 20, 2007 at 2:58 PM

Oh yeah, and if I eat Taco Bell, my Carbon Footprint jumps to 20. Just ask my wife.

E L Frederick (Sniper One) on March 20, 2007 at 2:59 PM

So which candidate will be the first to call for a carbon neutral military and demand that up-armoured Toyota Prius’s be deployed?

$300-$400 for a 10,000 square foot home??? No way. That can’t be possible. Even if he kept the temp down in the winter and up in the summer.

But it’d be such a silky, shiny, well-conditioned Breck scalp.

James on March 20, 2007 at 3:05 PM

Bogus Chart…

Ran it twice, once for me… 15 tons… below average…

Then put in the other 3 folks living in my house???

35 TONS…

So its not an average per person, its total per household. When I put in my daughters and livein girlfreinds car, it skyrocketed.

Romeo13 on March 20, 2007 at 3:08 PM

AP: I also live in NYC and have, by NYC standards, a large one BR apt (850 sg ft) in a medium rise bldg…I just averaged my ConED for the last three months and the average was $118.00…now,unless they have a ridiculously low cost per KWH there is no way in hell he can heat that amount of area for $300-400/month.

He said he is using solar power. Did anyone see any solar panels on his roof? Wait, he must be planning on building a solar power farm in a clearing not pictured. Someone must call him on this.

Theworldisnotenough on March 20, 2007 at 3:19 PM

Irish – I think it’s safe to say the calculator is weighted.

I think the low power bill has less to do with Edwards’ energy efficiency and more to do with price.

Slublog on March 20, 2007 at 3:21 PM

Energy is way cheaper in his America.

Professor Blather on March 20, 2007 at 3:22 PM

In my America, I say he’s full of s***, but he’s telling the truthiness in his America.

Dummy up, pretty boy, and show us the bills.

My heating tab (gas heat) in North Jersey this past month for one-tenth the square footage was over $400; of course in the sumemr, my gas bill is around $12. Electric is pretty cheap in the winter but about $150 in the summer months.

In the end though, is this what we’ve come to in this country, quibbling over who pays what for our utilities? Our enemies must be dying of laughter as they plot our doom.

Just think, if an EMP bomb goes off, we won’t have to worry about electric bills.

JammieWearingFool on March 20, 2007 at 3:30 PM

Remember there are two Americas. Ones deserving of carbon offsets and those who pay out the a$$ to get carbon offsets.

I feel dirty already. Becoming a carbon whore hoar. Must be a gay guy thing.

I have a 2000sq Texas everyhouse. Plenty for me and the wify. Our bill averages about 200 (125 winter….300 summer). That of course doesn’t even count the gas bill. Pony is a liar unless he is using candle wax and imitation bear blankets in the winter and fan-workers in the summer.

Same here. I have electric heat, and my electric bill was about $120 for each of the last two months, but in the summer it’s usually below $40. That’s part of the issue here, it’s just not that cold in the winter down there, but wait and see what he’s using to cool that sprawling estate once summer hits. That said, he’s lying anyway. Gimme a break.

“Three, four-hundred dollars… last one I saw”

The question is, what was the last one you saw? An apartment you stayed in 20 years ago before you had staff taking care of all that? You can just watch him and tell he’s totally lying, and has absolutely no clue what the bill is, or he’d have said “last month I paid”… Not “I’m not telling you….. uh… it’s not that bad…. uh three, four-hundred dollars… last one I saw” WTF?!

$300-$400 for a 10,000 square foot home??? No way. That can’t be possible….

Of course. I mean, in a lot of households only one spouse does the bills anyway…. But when you’re as rich as this guy, does anyone honestly think he or his wife are sitting down at the table with reading glasses on and a checkbook out, paying bills, comparing the electric to the meter when it seems a little high, haggling over the cable promo when it ended earlier than expected, etc. I’m not even saying there’s anything wrong with being too rich to care or pay attention to your bills, but it’s clear how evassive he was and then when cornered saying “the last one I saw”, that could mean anything, and anyone with an ounce of common sense can see that he’s totally lying.

With the size of the Pony property, all the construction going on, and all of the amenities he has, somehow I doubt the Ponies try to conserve anything. I venture to guess that the Pony mansion is more like a perpetual party palace – bright lights, lots of people, lots of food and drink, tons of cars and SUVs parked out front, and Pony right in the center of it all.

I’m a 12 according to BP. But since I claim all “carbon footprints” not being used by those not brought into this world through abortion, I will be in the negative for the rest of my life.

Even if I buy a Hummer, Ferrari F355 and turn my heat up in winter and the air conditioning down in summer. Even if I run around the world in my own G5.
