Video: McCain rips the Club for Growth

On one side, liberal former Republican senator Lincoln Chafee. On the other side, the conservative Club for Growth. Which will earn St. John of Tuscon’s allegiance?

I think he’ll come to regret that last line. It’ll make a swell quote in an ad during the primaries from, say, Mitt Romney’s or Fred Thompson’s or Duncan Hunter’s or someone else’s camp.

I think McCain is going to regret a lot of the stupid things he’s been saying of late.

Slublog on March 19, 2007 at 2:12 PM

Moron…

Does this really surprise anyone though? He knows his campaign is a joke and he has zero, yes ZERO chance to win the GOP nom. Maybe he’s tacking left in the hopes of running as a 3rd party/independant, y’know, like TR, the guy he wants to be. Of course, if he accomplishes anything to that end, he’ll do nothing but get a Dem elected, like TR did. But he ain’t gonna have TR’s legacy.

History repeats itself. If I remember my history correctly Fred Thompson is gonna whip McCains @$$ just like we whipped the Cherokee during the Cold War.

That’s exactly what happened.

amish on March 19, 2007 at 2:16 PM

Why doesn’t he just run as a Democrat. He’s actually got a chance at that one.

Esthier on March 19, 2007 at 2:16 PM

I’m not sure what conservatism and John McCain really have in common.

saint kansas on March 19, 2007 at 2:18 PM

Absolutely. They could also point out his hyporcrisy in invoking the Republican’s 11th commandment, as he’s done far more than his fair share of speaking ill of other Republicans.

Please keep talking, Johnny – I don’t want you to be the nominee, and the more you talk makes it far less likely that you will.

I don’t get what McCain is thinking. He’s almost defiantly ignoring conservatives. He’s not going to get the nomination this way, does he even care? If he’s going to run as a third party… he’ll get murdered, won’t he? Or does he want to pull a Ross Perot, guarenteeing some Dem in the white house?

Vanceone on March 19, 2007 at 2:18 PM

The man is going to pull a Perot. He knows he cannot get the nomination and will run a third party ticket just to show how big his gumballs are.

Senator McCain I truly thank you for your military service but you are not the man this country needs as the CIC.

Limerick on March 19, 2007 at 2:19 PM

darn-it Vanceone ya beat me too it.

Limerick on March 19, 2007 at 2:20 PM

Another example of McCain’s terrible political instincts. He lost the nomination in 2000 to GWB, and he’ll be heading for the early exits this time, as well. I have no sympathy for this man, just pity.

liberty on March 19, 2007 at 2:29 PM

Maybe the believes that he can form a 3rd party ticket with Mr. Lieberman and gather followers from both sides. While it would be good to have a stronger 3rd party, I don’t think enough from the left would join. In the end I think he knows this.

Entelechy on March 19, 2007 at 2:41 PM

At least he is honest about defiling the GOP base- unlike the other DC power structure RINOs.

Valiant on March 19, 2007 at 2:43 PM

liberty on March 19, 2007 at 2:29 PM

McVain may well jump ship, but I don’t see Liebs leaving the Dems unless it were to go RINO. Bloomy’s name comes up quite often, but I don’t see him playing second fiddle to anyone.

Kid from Brooklyn on March 19, 2007 at 2:58 PM

McCain says he’s not sure what he and the Club for Growth have in common. I’m not sure what McCain has in common with anyone other than his liberal buddies in the senate. I’m also not sure what he’s up to . . . . but I’ll bet it’s not good.

rplat on March 19, 2007 at 2:58 PM

I thought this about McCain and the Hair Club for Men.
/nevermind

LakeRuins on March 19, 2007 at 3:08 PM

What’s with the leather flight jacket and shamrock?
Is he in the Irish Air Force now too?

Hening on March 19, 2007 at 3:12 PM

Valiant said it before I could-McCain’s a RINO.

tormod on March 19, 2007 at 3:24 PM

As far as political comments go he was scoring major points with a lot of people for what he was saying(like Bryan said “I think he’ll come to regret that last line.”)

This is Classic McCain, blah blah (good) blah blah (good) blah blah (what did he just say??)

MirCat on March 19, 2007 at 4:21 PM

Bryan, great find. The more and more I see of the “front runners,” the more and more I am adamant the Fred Thompson MUST run! Can you imagine a ticket with Thompson/Hunter? or even Thompson/Tancredo? That’s a pure R. Lee Ermey combo right there! LOVE it!

MsUnderestimated on March 19, 2007 at 4:23 PM

I’m not sure I see the controversy here. Haven’t McCain and CFG been adversaries for a while now? They went after him in 04, no?

SouthernDem on March 19, 2007 at 4:30 PM

Well, expressing sympathy for Chafee is not going to win McCain any points with the base, who for the most part are glad to see Chafee go–not that McCain seems to care a whole lot about the base.

I really hope McCain’s not pondering an independent run. He’s a traitor to the party in many ways, but surely he’s not THAT much of a traitor to just hand the election over to the Dems. Which is, of course, clearly what would happen if he ran as an independent. He’d split the pro-war vote, leaving the entire anti-war vote to the Dems.

aero on March 19, 2007 at 4:35 PM

Geez, Louise.

I don’t know why Big John just doesn’t team up with Lieberman and run as an independent. It would be best for all concerned if he did.

Personally, I’m for Fred. Thompson/Steele in 08.

BacaDog on March 19, 2007 at 4:36 PM

Oh man, I thought this was about hair. He certainly looks like the owner of that club.

Coronagold on March 19, 2007 at 4:44 PM

It seems St John’s political beliefs provide for two huge melting pots: one leans slightly to the left; the other leans slightly to the right. This only shines a glaring light on the fact he is out of touch with the underlying conservative beliefs of the Republican party. Call him a RINO? Why, yes. If it looks like a RINO and smells like a RINO then it must be a RINO.

thedecider on March 19, 2007 at 4:44 PM

I respect the man, and respect that he is speaking his mind. Yeah he’s a media whore, but it can be refreshing to see someone lay it out there consequences be damned. Watching the other guys and gals where every muscle twitch and head tilt is choreographed grates on my nerves.

And no, I’m not supporting McCain.

RW Wacko on March 19, 2007 at 4:56 PM

VOTE FRED THOMPSON! VOTE FRED THOMPSON!

msipes on March 19, 2007 at 5:20 PM

McCain has about the same chance of becoming the 44th POTUS as I have.

Dave R. on March 19, 2007 at 5:43 PM

McCain is about as Republican as George Bush…

Mellen on March 19, 2007 at 6:22 PM

Sorry, but I’ve been vacationing in socialist Europe (wife’s family)…is Fred Thompson really going to run?! That would be a breath of fresh air. An actual conservative on the Republican ticket!

trader67 on March 19, 2007 at 6:27 PM

Here’s the thing about McCain/Lieberman forming a third party:

As paleo-conservative as I am, I’d vote for Lieberman before I’d vote for McCain; At least Lieberman is basically sane.

LegendHasIt on March 19, 2007 at 6:51 PM

Sorry John, thank you for your service to our country, but it is time for you to watch from tbe sidelines.

Your service has been long and distinguished, and we will never forget your efforts in McCain-Feingold, nor your efforts with Ted Kennedy for “Comprehensive Immigration Reform” that if passed, will give amnesty to 20 million illegals.

Thank you Senator, we will take it from here, and will try to fix this country from the damage that you, and your fellow RINOs have done.

Next up?

Thompson/Steele in 08, with Gingrich, Hunter, Tancredo in the cabinet……..

PinkyBigglesworth on March 19, 2007 at 7:19 PM

What has gotten into McCain that he has been saying and doing so many dumb things lately? He is better than this. Is he being advised by some nitwit leftist?

Phil Byler on March 19, 2007 at 7:47 PM

LegendHasIt on March 19, 2007 at 6:51 PM

I’m with you. I liked Liebs before Liebs was cool. Does that make me a RINO? Yikes!

thedecider on March 19, 2007 at 11:35 PM

Fred Thompson is running for President?

iNeXuS on March 20, 2007 at 3:57 AM

Thompson strikes me as a mature adult. Not so McCain.
